What Does Your Name Mean?

Growing up, every time I saw one of these lists the origin was European and the meaning was noble. On this list the orgin is Arabic and the meaning said wishes and desires.

Ha! This could be an interesting puzzle, if you don’t mind me saying this. For the life of me, can't figure out your name. Not as easy as all other ones listed.

“Wish/Desire” in Arabic is رغبة and is a name of a popular perfume sold in Dubai Airport and in the shops of UAE.

It starts with letter “R”, and there is hardly a similar sounding name equivalent in any European languages, except for a much modified version of that name with Hebrew roots.

However, there is a precise word for “Wish/Desire/Intent” in Farsi/Persian, which starts with letter “M”, which is in use in Europe, and for example, is a subject of a famous painting by David. It depicts a Swiss-born, yet French national, famous scientist/journalist/revolutionary, his family was not quite nobility but rather educated intelligencia.

My name is from the Hebrew and means bee
I went to Purim one year dressed as a bee.
The original name with "v", instead of "b", is used for girls' name not because of a "bee" association, but because this is a name of two women prophets used in the Torah.

You are amazing and close. I know of the painting you speak of but Da Vinci's lady with the mysterious smile shares my name. But the breadth of your knowledge: Are you a linguist? Sleuth? I salute you. (We don't share Lisa--my parents opted out with a family name.)

(Oy, I don’t deserve the praises; noting a perfume name in Dubai airport hardly makes me a linguist. “Traveler”? perhaps. My spelling, grammar and sentence structure sucks in all languages. I seem to have a weird brain wiring, in addition to kilos of LCD, dope and other fun substances, which seem to affect it.)

Your name game is the most fun of all listed. Gioconda is out of the question, for obvious reasons, as it has NO Arabic roots. So we have Mona??? !!! Ok, there is an Arabic word “moona” which means “unattainable dream” or “unrealistic expectations”??... But! That is hardly the only and primary explanation for “Mona” for a person with European roots… I think your name is the Italian version of “Milady” from Three Musketeers (My Lady), only in your case it is “Mia Donna” to “Ma’ dona” to “M-(d)-ona”…

I think you have italian roots....

Well I like your brain. I had never heard of the root before (muna) that was presented with this particular website. I certainly like the Italian version. I found out, when traveling in Europe, that in Spanish my name can also denote a type of monkey. Mona monkey---probably the meaning I like the least though it is better than being a name for a type of roach or rodent.

Apparently I am a Princess and as such, I am banishing a certain person back to his TOWER...never to be released upon the world again! Begone, knave, begone! :drama:

I don't need the website, because I already know it's Hebrew, and it means "Lily". But I put it in the website anyway!

It was a very popular name a good 15-20 years before I was born. Not so much in my generation.

My full name means God is Gracious. I've known that one for a while because my mom's name and mine have similar meanings. Nell, which is what I would rather go by, means Light. Which for some reason I had never looked up. I like it.

My full name has become more popular recently. There's at least one relatively popular singer who has it, she even spells it right:lol:. By which I just mean it's spelled the same way I spell it. I have encountered a few customers who have it as well. Although only one or tow of them spell it right. There's at least one photographer who spells it with an "H" and there is no reason why an "H" should be in that name. It still confuses me a little.

Most people assume my name is an anglicized spelling of a German name. I think it is more likely a literal translation of either Celtic or Gaelic into English. It was a common name among 19th century immigrants from Ireland to Canada and the U.S.

It could be either one. It means a person with money.

I love to read about name origin histories; they sometimes show what was "valued" at the time or by a group of people or a family.
I once worked with an older woman, who was born in Bolivia to a family of 12 children. She was the youngest, her parents intended for her to go into a convent and become a nun, as they believed that at least one child must be given to God for service. Her mother became pregnant at the age of 41 just for that purpose. The woman was given a name "Donacia" (if i am pronouncing/writing it correctly).

My name is Charlotte, which according to every site ever except this one means 'small and womanly', but for some reason according to this one means 'free'.

Ah, Liiinda! :) Or, is it Bonita perhaps?!!!
:D it's probably "Linda", because in El Henry's post there is a 2nd clue "my name was a drug on the market in the 50's".
Which means it is a ref to Van Der Linden's chemical invention of a cream and shampoo for lice and mite prevention - "Lindane". Its use and effect was later questioned in the 90's.

Charlotte is the feminine version of Charles, which in the most common interpretation means a free man (germanic). So that's probably where the "free" came from. Small and womanly would be stretching the interpretation, but I suppose adding the feminine ending ("otte"as a diminutive might make it so, but it's just the suffix that has that meaning.)

A lot of these name meanings, especially for the more modern names, are really just made up, or borrowed from names with similar sounds which are not the same origin at all.

....

Indeed, it is Linda. Bonita would be cool, but alas, it is not.

Tinami, I have enjoyed reading your explanations of various languages, but I am afraid my reference was far less learned. "Drug on the market" is an idiom for "oversupply" (even useless ;)). We had five Lindas in a high school math class of 33. Five. For those of us born in the 1950s, at least in my corner of the USA, the name was legion.:D

BTW, "el" is my first initial. And what spousal unit calls me. Hence almost my real name, but not quite.....

:D.. i am keeping alive Griboeydov's "Woe from wit"... :D

Another 'joy of the father', but this one originates in England. I was not much of a joy to my father, so it that regard I would be inaptly named.

Cute. I've always known it means "Lily" (so what does the name Lily mean? ha ha). I remembered that Stockard Channing and Sigourney Weaver changed their stage names from Susan (how dare they!) I was born in almost the peak year for Susans. I know it was the third most popular name that year. The rest of it kind of doesn't make sense (Susans are timid AND self-confident? - gotta love the internet quizzes).

Another Lily here although not Susan. My name is not unfamiliar, but has very rarely cracked the SSA list of top 1000 girls' names.

O.k. - how can so many names "mean" Lily? :) A lily is a flower. Is there a significance to "meaning" Lily specifically? Soft, gentle, fragile, Easter, funerals? My friend's granddaughter's name IS Lilly, with 2 L's.

According to the internet (Seven Reflections), Lily means -

You always bring to completion anything you start. You are generous but like to see returns from your giving. You have an executive ability, you are a leader. You are moral, balanced, honest and intellectual, and you may attain spirituality. You are wise and practical with an appreciation of beauty. You always think before you act.You are intuitive and might be interested in the arts, drama or science.Dependable, very down-to-earth and well grounded, you are always looking for meaningful work, a career where you can take pride in your work and do the best job you are capable of. Your prime desire is to build protected and secure environment at home and at work. You can be very persuasive in achieving goals and gaining objectives. You can be very detailed and well-organized and possess great organizational skills. At times you may appear too stubborn and overly critical to others, but your practical approach to life and productivity makes you one of the most beneficent members of community.

So is that what all the names that mean Lily mean? :) (feeling extra analytical today)

No -
Susan - You are spiritually intense and can sting or charm. Your name brings love and new starts into life and attracts money. In business, you are the creator and promoter of original ideas and usually enjoy considerable financial success. Emergencies may raise your intuitive abilities in order to resolve conflict or situation. You become very creative under the pressure, and have quite original ideas to make the best out of it.You are always looking for an opportunity to achieve financial and emotional security. You are basically peacemaker. You understand the law of harmony and desire to balance your life with those around you. You may feel incomplete without someone to share your love, ideals, wealth or work. You can be very sensitive and could appear a bit shy and perceptive. You have developed intuition, patience and the ability to nurture others. You can achieve the state of happiness if you is willing to accept your needs in a complimentary relationship and go to create them.

From the original website, my middle name means "keeper of the keys" or "pure". That makes more sense than a specific flower. My mom's name means "bright meadow" and, of course, her middle name, Rose, means Rose.
