Yikes - 1994 Euro women were the dark ages of ladies skating. It was like an intermediate ladies nationals with a bunch of women struggling to land one triple. And those stiff legged cringey Russian women. Yikes.

Czako was such a breath of fresh air back then - too bad she couldn't never get it together and win a major championship.

Now I want to go watch her Addams Family LP!

IIRC, she only had an hour of ice time a day. It’s remarkable what she was able to accomplish given that.

Yeah she was such a natural talent jump wise. And her AF program really showed her performance potential. She always started out strong and fell apart midway through the program but I was really gunning for her to win bronze at that worlds.

Emilia Nemirovsky lands a 3A in practice. Her technique is impeccable! Excited to see where this leads her this season.

Emilia recently competed at SkateFest last week and she earned a score of 159.39. Her TES in the free was a sizzling 68.29 after she struggled in the short, landing seven clean triples including her huge 3Lz3T combination which nabbed a GOE of nearly two points. Emilia also debuted on the JGP last season, scoring 147.05 and placing 10th overall in Thailand. She is the reigning pewter medalist at Junior Nationals.

Wasn't 94 actually a well-skated event? It's been a while since I've watched, but I remember the level being surprisingly high.

There were some dark years in the late aughts. It felt like all Laura Lepisto needed was to rotate three triples and that was good enough for a medal.

By 2004 Worlds, Cohen’s LP was such a hackjob. 6 jumping passes in a row, very little transitions and choreo. Everything that made Tarasova’s choreo genius and so fitting to Cohen was stripped out. That program was emptier than Kwan’s LP and done with worse skating skills.

Arakawa’s win still stands with me. I might think differently if Cohen skated to Tat’s Swan Lake instead of Wagner’s. :shuffle:
I must confess I never saw a striking difference between the Tarasova and Robin Wagner Swan Lakes.😲

top 6 were decent by that era's low standards but by anna rechnio who got 7 and below it was truly a club-level junior ladies event with most of the women barely able to eke out one or two clean triples.

altho I assume a lot of competitions were like that back then so I guess this wasn't much of an anomaly, most of the lower placing ladies were just never broadcast so tv audiences were mostly spared.

yeah and lepisto double loop-double toeing her way to a world bronze was a sad day for women's skating indeed.

At Campbell's, with Tarasova.

At Worlds, with Robin

Not bothering to watch the second, but it was so good revisiting the first :respec:

Emilia’s triple axel

If we include Alysa I’m currently up to five US women I think with triple axels.
I believe so. There’s Amber, Alysa, Sophie, Emilia, and Alexa. I wonder if Jessica Jurka will attempt the 3A this season which would bring it up to six—she posted several 3As that she landed in practice. There’s also Keira Hilbelink who is actively training the 4S as well as Sherry Zhang who posted off the harness attempts of the 3A.
