@livetoskate, Adam was quoted about his father in the article posted earlier in this thread (link re-posted below):
His parents divorced when he was 13. When asked about his father, Rippon simply said “we’re not very close.” He describes his mother Kelly as “one of my heroes.”
Of all the Adam Rippon articles published ahead of the Olympics that I've read online, this one by Scott Reid of the Orange County Register includes the best quotes from his mother: https://www.ocregister.com/2018/01/...n-and-off-the-ice-on-the-way-to-the-olympics/
ETA:
I have no idea why he isn't as vocal in support of Adam. I half wonder if it's just the media pushing the Mom narrative and ignoring a supportive father. Certainly Vincent's Dad is supportive, but he's hardly mentioned.
It's the same with Nathan's father -- NBC's fluff videos show his mother with him at competitions, skating with him, etc. His father lives in Utah and stays in the background (I happened to meet him at the U.S. Classic in Salt Lake City this past September when he was volunteering at the event :) and he seemed like a very nice, unassuming person).

On the bright side, I will pull out of my depression long enough to congratulate Vincent and Adam on decent SPs: I know there was a small issue on each of Vincent’s jumping passes but he rotated, didn’t fall and I think he made the penultimate group w/ a SB? He usually does better in the LP.

Adam was very close to a PB. He may very well have gotten there with a solid axel

My SO uses the costume argument. I guess he thinks if you wear a costume, it is no longer about the athletics. Meh. It's okay if people don't think skating is a sport. What is so magical about 'sport'?
One could easily argue that every sport has its own "costume" - basketball teams, etc. just happen to wear the same one.

I feel like there's a certain level of misogyny/homophobia inherent in the "they wear costumes, therefore it can't be a real sport" line. Because yeah, it's okay for football players to wear supertight pants when they're playing a macho sport, but wearing a "costume" is not okay because "that's something only women (or 'effeminate' men) would do." I feel like that's the real underlying thought behind that complaint.

It kinda makes me want to see skaters go all out with max glitter and bling. Because :p. :biggrinbo

BTW ANL is still pissed..... I taped BOTH NBCSN and NBC....

ON NBCSN I saw all them men until half of Patricks program... when the 4 hours stopped. (In the middle of Patricks' performance)

Then I switched over to NBC expecting them to show the last group and whoever was left after patrick..

NBC only showed a rebroadcast of Adam... AND THAT WAS IT??? Whats going on? How many channels and number of programs do I have to record each night???

I still havent seen Nathan, Yuzuru, Javi yet......

What kinda NBC coverage was that? To show us a bunch of runs by Shiffrin who didnt even medal or what?? And what kinda numbers does luge and skeleton bring in? Flatliners??? Although that USA DUDE who won silver a few days ago IS SMOKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I AM SOOO confused.. Ive never seem an Oly broadcast where they showed NO mens SP on the main broadcast...

What should I record tonight? Euro Sport? And how?

Where did you all watch the last group of mens????????????

(((Nathan))) I really feel for him! And what's up with Raf's cryptic non-messages? "No comment" is seldom a good sign....

Actually I believe it's a coach responsibility to try to shield their skater, especially when the skater is very young, from media, from everything that's going on around. I understand there's sponsors and responsibility, but there must be a balance. (When I watch the footage of Tonya Harding trying to escape the press before Lillehammer, I'm shaking my head in disbelief that no one interfered and tried to help her. How could she lead a "normal" life, let alone train, under such circumstances. It was crazy. Britney with paparazzi's in the bushes were better off) I know too little about the whole situation to say anything, and so I can't blame Raf, but from my perspective - if I was a coach, I would have tried to cool things down. Give Nathan some peace, trying to take some weight off his shoulders.

I watched the entire thing on NBCSN. I'm in mountain time and the first 4-hr segment stopped at 9pm but the skating continued when the second segment started.

Pacific time has the usual 4 hours time slot on NBCSN and NBC. At NBCSN at the 3:59 marker Patrick had just started his SP and it cut off. (That was the 4 hour mark). SO then I went over to NBC because FOR SURE I thought they would have final flight plus USA guys... ALL they showed in their 4 hour telecast was a repeat of Adam which already aired in the 4 hour portion of NBCSN.

For me is shocking that they showed NO mens SP in the MAIN NBC telecast. Even in the description it said Mens SP figure skating. All they showed was WAYYYYYYYYY too much of Mikaela and luge and skeleton and snow board cross.

sigh......

Just wanted to say that, using a VPN set to Canada, I watched the entire men's SP at olympics.cbc.ca and it was wonderful.

I cut the cable cord some years ago and NBC's Olympic broadcast coverage can always be counted on to be horrible.

It's crazy to think that all three US men will be in the Top 10 at the Olympics when all is said and done.

It's also crazy to think about what Nathan and Vincent are capable of come the next Olympic cycle. It'll be exciting to see what happens, especially at this year's worlds. I hope Nathan kills it there.

All three U.S. men skated well in the long. They really showed what they were made of. Incredibly proud of all three of them and I'm glad Nathan got the skate he deserved to have with this large global audience and winning the LP to boot. Vincent having the second highest TES should be nothing but a boost of confidence for him.

And Zhou should be cleaning his quads.

Every man could do that. There was some nice calling all-around tonight. I wouldn't say lenient though as Sliver pointed that that overzealous calling could be just as inaccurate as overly lenient calling as the overzealous ones ignore the 1/4 rule.

Nice job US men! All 3 in the top 10! 5-Nathan, 6-Vincent 10 - Adam
Nathan won the free skate AND highest TES @ 127.64. Vincent was 6th in the free AND second highest TES @ 112.24, Adam was 10th in the free skate AND 14th in TES at 84.47
For PCS, Nathan was 6th at 87.44, Adam was 7th at 86.94, Vincent was 19th at 79.92.
Homework for Nathan and Vincent are PCS scores.
Nathan could work on hitting 2 programs at huge international events.

I've been able to watch every pairs and men's short and long program on NBCSN. I'm in California - Pacific time. They sometimes cut away to other sports during ice makes, but they showed every skater. I'm not sure why it cut off for you? I'm watching live, however, not from my DVR. Maybe your DVR is cutting off early?

I know there has been talk about Nathan going to Orser, but honestly, I want to see Zhou go to him instead. Or both of them. But, if only one of our men can snag a spot with Team Orser, I really want it to be Zhou. I think he could work wonders with Vincent's PCS, and help clean up those quads.

I actually saw passion in his skate I think he has potential to be more emotive than Chen...

I also had problems seeing the complete competition and I recorded both channels too. Vincent was chacked! For some reason he and his group is not on either recording. Argh!!!!!

Vincent's whole group was on NBCSN, but I think the broadcast must have cut off & started a new segment. It stopped recording for us on our DVR, and we didn't notice, though we were watching live. Same thing happened the other night.
