U.S. Men 2019-20 season - news & updates

Has Vincent started at Dartmouth, I mean Brown, this semester? It could just be a really tough month.

... could be, but does that also explain the last few years of underrotations?

It's a problem. It's there. It's not going away. The tech panels need to come down hard on him or it will never be fixed and even then it might not be fixed, since Tom Z's response last season was to have a whinge about mean tech panels.

Apparently Vincent is a lost cause... other than the time he won world juniors... oh and medalled at worlds... I think we should totally write him off as a failure. <insert severe eyeroll here>

I was going to post something similar. Really. Vincent is doing well generally speaking. In fact, last year I believe he debuted at the same competition in the same subpar manner and ended up w/ the World Bronze medal by the end of the season.

At 2019 Worlds, Vincent Zhou received 4S< in his SP and 4T< and 3Lz+1Eu+3F< in his FS and still was able to score enough points overall for the bronze medal.

From what I recall, Zakrajsek's FB post after Skate America last year was more than just about "whinging about mean tech panels" (I have no interest in revisiting that discussion here) but, in any case, he's not part of Zhou's coaching team this year: https://usfigureskatingfanzone.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=167

Lucas Broussard has been added to USFS' International Selection Pool. He was 12 when he won the 2019 U.S. Juvenile Boys national title (he must have turned 13 before July 1 in order to be eligible for the ISP) and has the top Intermediate Men's score (136.35) in NQS competitions this summer. He won the Novice Men's event at the Sherwood Invitational club competition in Oregon last month with a total score of 161.66. He is coached by Darin Hosier and Corrie Martin in the Seattle area.
For those who like to see original pieces used in skating, I really enjoyed Lucas Broussard's Challenge Skate Novice SP performance to a contemporary piece, "Morpheus" cello concerto (3rd movement) by Oliver Davis, chosen and choreographed by Corrie Martin. Broussard seems to enjoy -- and pays attention to --- the details in his choreography (scroll to the 1 hour 2 minute mark; 30 second ad will play first): https://usfigureskatingfanzone.com/watch/?Archive=759
P.S. He also demonstrates some very nice spin positions!

Loving Alexei K's SP: https://youtu.be/k6ANpvLYf0M

The music and choreography are so innovative and I have never seen Alexei skate with this much artistic expression! He is taking a page from Nathan Chen's book.

Alexei's programs are choreographed by Alex Johnson. I would give Alex the most credit and influence in his work with Alexei. :) Alexei skated very well and consistently compared to those who took the podium.

Vincent always looks rough at the start of a new season for some reason. But he seems to peak at the right time at the end of the season if you look at the past 3 years.

I would agree. I like both of Vincent's programs. The fp has a lot of room to grow. It's ambitious and challenging for Vincent. It's nice to see that he and his team are intent on his artistic growth process.

Can I ask how to get the video in these links to play?

Do you see/can you click on the play arrow in the middle of the screen? After the 30 second ad plays you may need to maximize the screen (if you're using a mobile device) in order to make the bottom navigation/scroll bar appear and be able to advance the video forward to the time I mentioned.

^^ When I click on the link the black screen does not have a play arrow in it. Maybe I have to go to site directly and look for the videos?

Removing those who already have byes to Nationals, I gather the top 6 per section scores from NQS which should grant skaters byes through Regionals would basically get everyone noteworthy into Sectionals for Senior and Junior men?

Alex Krasnozhon's 2.5 minute IGTV interview video filmed by USFS recently in Dallas: https://www.instagram.com/p/B3IhVjSgZ5

Also, best wishes to Ilia Malinin and Matthew Nielsen in the SP of their 2nd JGP in Egna, Italy tomorrow! Malinin is scheduled to skate at 2:29 pm and Nielsen at 2:41 pm Eastern time.

Thanks, Claire! Excerpt from the interview article:
That program - I just love it so much because it has a connection to my heart. And yeah, there are a lot of places where I can point my toe more, but at the end of the day, all of that comes from the inside. It's hard to explain, but when I do my programs, I never really think about performing, or I never think about, "Oh, look up, look out.” I listen to the music and I look inside my heart to show the world what I'm feeling when I’m listening to it. It's something that can never be taught or learned. It's something that you really have to just know.
... If I'm skating to "Fix You", it's obviously about someone in love fixing another person. With this program, I want people to know that we're all together and we're all humans together so we shouldn't be fighting. We really should just be loving and helping each other out.

Jordan Cowan filmed one minute of Camden's "Fix You" (his 2017–18 SP originally choreographed by Drew Meekins) at a rehearsal for EWC: https://www.instagram.com/p/B3CBYhwnqXO/

Thank you so much for posting that interview. Camden reminds me a bit of Paul Wylie (both in his personality and style of skating) and I am hoping that he too will have his "Paul Wylie" moment and make history at a big competition.

I'd rather he be a consistent player amongst the top echelon of men's skating, but I get the Paul Wylie comparison: More down than up but ends his career w/ something incredible.

Really enjoyed Nathan at Japan Open! He’s in much better form than last year’s JO. I think I like this program for him, but it seemed maybe a little disjointed with some jarring edits. I pretty much loved all the sections by themselves, just not sure they blend together they way I’d prefer. The hip hop footwork was great...very unique and memorable. What do others think about this program?

Vincent did well for this early in the season. He is looking handsome. Growing up...still can’t believe he is only 18. Like the haircut too. His artistry is improved over last year. I approve of the work he’s done with Mie Himada. Watching his growth as a skater each season is fun!

Watched the videos from the JO.

Nathan looks good: I can't help but insist on the Kwan comparison. Ultimate experts at pacing themselves thru a trying season. He like Kwan seems impervious to his competitors and does what his body tells him to do at the time, backing off early in the season, popping a jump here and there instead of forcing it, and saving energy for later.

Good rebound by Vincent here, too from the American Classic. I have faith he will do what he must do later in the season.

Excellent observations. I keep thinking about his schedule, assuming that he needs to be in New Haven probably tomorrow and then back out to Las Vegas probably next Wednesday, etc., etc. And he has another thirty months until that gap year around the 2022 Olympics. He appears to be one of the most self-possessed individuals I've ever seen; cool as a cucumber. I think his decision to go to Yale and pursue a life outside of skating helps him to compartmentalize.

I believe he's stopping school after this season and taking two years off.

I don't think he's said definitively what he's doing. I think he's still trying to figure that out. As has been posted previously, Yale only allows a leave of absence for 2 semesters/1 year (without needing to reapply) so I imagine that will influence his decision process.

That was my understanding. If he's going pre-med, he has three sciences to contend with inclusive of labs.

Another transcribed interview from InTheLoop:

Andrew discussing his choice of Bloodstream by Tokio Myers:
"The story behind this program is pushing against what I’m 'supposed' to do and doing what I want to do. I feel like lots of times in figure skating we are centered around judgment and critiques, but this year I wanted to show that I don’t care about the 'norm.' I wanted to do something different and memorable..."
