 I see the Karen Chen detractors are out in full force trying to elevate and buildup their own skater by way of talking down another.

I didn't realize Paramount was full Olympic size. . The ice there is apparently very soft and not well maintained, which makes you skate a lot slower and makes everything require more effort/energy.

Thanks for this info, I was wondering why both Karen & Ashley looked slower than usual, maybe that explains it.

This wasn't really a great outing for either of them, but let's see what happens once the GP starts.

Wow. Lots of comments re Ash (and Karen).

I watched Ash. The rink looked small and she was obviously giving her LP a test run. That said, the 3-3 looked smooth but I admittedly couldn't see her feet due to camera angle. She popped the Sal and 2-footed the Lutz, but it looked like a good base to build on.

BTW, I noted upthread that GG is still slated for CoC. Wasn't she taking a break??

I love how everyone is assuming after their showing at worlds, that the Canadian ladies will now be consistent at every event. Just like everyone was assuming the Russian ladies were unbeatable. Ice is slippery and I won't count the US ladies out.

Usually I would be happy that Karen is making these mistakes early on and getting strict calls because she really needs to work on aspects of her skating and program to continue to improve and be consistently competitive for medals. That said, I hope these past two set backs (U.S. Classic and here) don't shake up the new found confidence we thought she had when she first debuted her programs and people were speaking well of her.

I love how one small competition already has the doom and gloom "they have no chance" crowd out for both skaters, not to mention "FAN WARS!!!! for both sides. Ashley....UUUUUUUUUSE the FORCE and put in some new choreography!!!!!

It's frickin' October, folks. This was basically an exercise for both of them (especially Ashley). A lot can happen in the next few months. Can we keep the hand wringing to at least a reasonable level until the GP starts?

Good grief! :drama:

Ashley has been doing the same program for three years. Say there is slightly different choreo, but she is doing largely the same spins and jumps. She should be a lot further along than those having to learn their programs and get to know their music from scratch. That being known, her outing was disappointing.

Ashley last performed this program in March, and only recently started practicing it again.

But that doesn't matter!!! It should be embedded in her muscle memory so far that she should be able to do it without a warmup or any practice at all!!!! She's forcing us to see this same old program again, it should be PERFECT - no, MORE THAN PERFECT by now!!!!

Once again, good grief!!!!!

YES! And rainbows should shoot out of her butt during the step sequence! NO LESS WILL BE TOLERATED.

I am still waiting for the rainbow nails she yelled about in 3 interviews back in 2014.... and the La-La-Land which the second she heard it she knew it is HER! and she text to SLB in the middle of the night, yelling "its my music! watch it girls!", and hired SLB to choreograph it, and announced it 10 times, and made a movie, holly cow! on how she plans to create that one and only masterpiece so profound.. by the great star, Norma Desmond, excuse me, Ashley Wagner.... If a rainbow shoots out of her butt, I bet she'll not only expect an OGM, but an Oscar as well....... or she'll feel "gyped"...

What's a holly cow? Some new kind of Christmas decoration?

I'm a rational person, so I see their perform in a different context. Instead of a redo a nationals, I see two ladies using a club competition to test out their programs for the season. Ashley wanted to have a competition before the GP, where she can be judged and she can see areas that she can work on. She's currently changing both programs, so she's mostly testing the jumps so she can get a feel for landing them in a competition space again. The outfit, transitions, and choreography will change before SC.

For Karen I see multiple purposes. First, she had a minor injury during the summer, so her free isn't as broken in as she wants it to be. She just had a rough skate in US Classic, so this is a way for her to work out those kinks before SC. She's also reworking her 3Lz+3T combo. Here she can try it out with no pressure. Most importantly she gets to practice for the Team event. This weekend Karen will compete again in Japan. By doing two comps in close succession, she can prepare for the fatigue in competing in both the TE and singles in the OG.

So I'm not really concerned about "staleness" from Ashley or an empty program from Karen. They both have shown they can improve a lot over the season. Let's just sit back and enjoy the ride... Until we can't.

Way too rational... I hope we get videos from the Japan Open quickly!

I did hear about the ice quality though (from someone that trains there full time). The ice there is apparently very soft and not well maintained, which makes you skate a lot slower and makes everything require more effort/energy.
That is why the Canadian speed skaters were hating on Vancouver: at sea level, the ice was considered soft and slow in comparison to Calgary, the main training centre.

Karen Chen's skating is similar to Gaby Daleman more than anyone.

Karen is nowhere near as smooth as Gabby is. Gabby gains speed a lot easier than Karen whereas Karen needs to use a lot of crossovers to gain speed. Karen has nice positions but still needs quite a bit of work if she can’t handle any transitions within a program.

Actually, I think Ashley has improved her technique on the entrance to her 3f3t, although that may have happened earlier. For a while last year she was doing a gymnastics hurdle like hop into her 3f, it looked ridiculous. At least that is gone.
