U.S. Ice Dance 2018-19 season news & updates

S/E's emotion seemed "put on" to me while N/K's felt genuine. Ted Barton is a huge fan of N/K too.:)

Nguyen/Kolesnik also got better TES. S/E won PCS by a bit, but they gave up levels. N/K skated sharper and cleaner.

Congrats to N/K on the win and their trip to JGPF! They're coming along very well. On a slightly different note, I hope the Greens are healthy and in shape in time for Nationals. People were worried about spots with C/P moving up but I don't think that's a concern if everyone's healthy.

C/P are still eligible to be assigned to Jr. Worlds if they don't get assigned to Sr worlds or 4 Continents.

N/K progress is great but they are not at the level they are currently placed in this competition. Ted likes everyone... just a nice guy.

He does try to day nice things about everyone, but he's said he was speechless after N/K's FDs both times this season. He's expressed extreme admiration for their skating, more than any other team in the final group. You can tell which performances are his favorites.

They don't have junior programs though. It would mean big changes to the RD. It's much harder to move between Sr and Jr in dance compared to other disciplines. I'd be shocked if they went to JW. I don't think they'd want to, since they've moved on. But also, I don't think the Fed would send them. They have enough good junior teams, spots aren't a concern, so there's no reason to.

N/K's emotion definitely felt real to me, but I disagree that S/E's is put on. They're skating a different style of program, less understated, so it feels different, but they are doing it very well imo. The two teams seemed about even to me here, but N/K got the levels so they won.

I would be very surprised if C/P were sent to JW. They've done 2 Senior Bs and have 2 GPs, so that should help their ranking and placement on the SB list. For JW, I predict the Greens (if they are healthy), N/K, and G/S. The Browns or G/W could have an outside shot.

Wheee, Avonley & Vadim! See you in Vancouver:biggrinbo. (I just love that last lift. The way it changes direction while still reflecting the music & the mood of the program. Very rarely do I see a change-of-direction lift that doesn't take me out of the program. And, of course, she flies).

I think I'm more excited about the junior skaters we'll get to see in Vancouver than the potential senior rosters!

i.e. haines/koszuta of Linz!!:BNS1: :)

I would be surprised too. But it's a potential 500 WS points, and a year or two down the road--when the larger field has all been to Europeans, 4CCs, and/or Worlds, and you're fighting for GP invites with all the other U.S. teams, those 500 points could mean a lot. So I think it is worth keeping in mind that there is incentive. (And Carreira & Ponomarenko are in a pretty unique situation. Most U.S. dance teams that have moved up recently have either aged up, had little chance of getting an invite to Junior Worlds, or come into seniors with an open slot on the World team).

JGP Slovenia results/videos - a solid JGP debut by Efimova/Petrov as well!

6th - Alina EFIMOVA / Alexander PETROV USA 131.50

Which is the highest score after Gunter & Wein. So now we wait for USFSA to update their assignment page and/or for the Yerevan update deadline to pass, correct? Is that Tuesday?

Two seasons down the road, those 500 pts are factored at 70%, but 350 pts is still 350 pts.

I still don't know if that's a reason to train one new junior program and cut their senior one. 6th at 4C's is break even with a Jr. Worlds title.

I don't know that it's enough reason to do so either. Though 500 points, right now, would cover the current point spread between C&P and M&C and the Parsons. I also remember that Hawayek & Baker's invite to 4CCs their first year became pretty significant for them down the road. Most junior teams have just modified their SDs/RDs rather than trained completely new programs over the past couple seasons, as the rhythms have been the same despite the patterns being different.

I finally watched some of the FDs from Ljubljana and man I'm a huge fan of Avonley Nguyen (awesome first name)/Vadym Kolesnik and I liked Sofia Shevchenko/Igor Eremenko's choreography (mostly the choreographic twizzle and his high kick). Both teams have a real natural ease of movement.

American ice dance is a true embarrassment of riches. I hope more and more mainstream attention is brought to it. At the last Olympics, on social media, so many regular non-diehard skating watchers loved watching ice dance. I'd love to see it fully capitalized on.

I think it's too late to substitute them in. Some Team USA members are leaving today for Yerevan.

I'm sure they are; I just don't like to make assumptions. Obviously, someone could have updated the USFSA assignment page prior to this event, but they didn't. (And only the 2nd dance team had not competed at a previous event). So I've been waiting on official confirmation. Wolfkostin & Zhao have the next highest score after Efimova & Petrov, and they aren't listed for the event either. Hot mess of a battle going on in the middle of the U.S. dance field. Basically, we have a whole bunch of teams capable of swapping results; and what we wound up with are the two teams that went up late edging the scores from the teams they are competitive with.

not sure... if they want 3 spots at next JW and 2 at each JGP next year, not sure N/V can accomplish that alone. The past shown you need at least two good teams...until we see that Greens are back we don't know for sure... I would keep C/P in my back pocket

G/S are good enough to help earn that third spot. And as long as N/K don't lose to anyone but Russians and L/L, which is what should happen, they'll get a full slate of JGP slots.

Well, I have a different opinion. S/E performance was really mature and masterful. N/K seemed forced and out of place some time.

I think SS are what's holding S/E back, both this season and last. Sofia in particular is quite weak; she puts her weight on the front of her blade and doesn't hit a deep edge. They have beautiful packaging, choreography, lines, are well matched, but what they do with their feet on the ice isn't at the level it needs to be.

May be- just difficult to see all the nuances on TV. This is unfortunate. Well - at least they have all that needed to be successful in the future which is the most important thing.

I don't think this Sept. 15th local Michigan article was ever posted in this thread: Olympic ice Dance coach Shpilband signs eight-year deal to continue in Novi
The 54-year-old Shpilband currently has ten full-time ice dancing teams, representing five countries, under his tutelage this season, along with other teams that share their training time in Novi. He is currently coaching Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko, the reigning U.S. Junior National champions and silver medalists at the 2018 Junior Worlds.
“The City of Novi is proud to host Igor and his teams for another eight years,” said Jeff Muck, Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Service. “Igor has put the city on the map numerous times since 2012, and we are thrilled to continue our relationship. We look forward to celebrating the hard work and dedication of his teams on the international stage over the next several years.”
This past year, former Italian ice dancer, Pasquale Camerlengo, joined Shpilband’s ice dance coaching team.
