It amazes me the posters here who keep insisting that Camp Eteri doesn't encourage questionable diets and think everyone who believes so are jealous and bitter about Russian skating. I saw this same kind of denial when it came to sexual harassment allegations in sports.

There is way too much smoke around Camp Eteri for there not to be fire.

Comments like yours and other's like you, are nothing more than either jealousy or russian hate. Because none of it is true, as far as Eteri's practices being outstandingly questionable.

Eteri's practices are outstanding! that's true.... :D

Because they don't do anything different than many many coaches do. It is a norm for many,

Read what Orser's Kurakova said about her last competition... she is WITH ORSER, IN CANADA!

Of course on the day of the event your body/organism stays dehydrated (waterless) and in a state of stress, and after the skate there are so much emotions, that "going to the toilet" is far from it.[/QUOTE]

I think I don’t know what goes on in Russia coaching wise eating disorders are everywhere.

Everyone is talking about well rounded skating and yes I love artistry is a part of this sport. But this is a sport. If someone comes in head and shoulders technically above others with huge risk they can do they deserve to win. So I think great sport deserves to be rewarded.

Do you have clear evidence about Eteri’s questionable diets or is it based only on “smoke”?

I guess that “smoke” are those legendary quotes from the interviews in Russian 2-3-4 years ago, translated here. Are you Russian speaker and did you read them in Russian? There is a big difference to read an interview in the original language or to see a translation, take the quotes out of context and interpret them in a subjective way.

For me, the evidence is if someone goes to Tutberidze’s training place, sees her working, hears what she says, what the girls say. Everything else is just subjective speculation and empty talking.

but all this fake concern about their age and how hard they must be training, and what happens when puberty comes....that’s just envy.
It's concern trolling. And if you call them on it, then you clearly don't care about abuse in sports!

As for eating disorders, unless someone is so far down the path of anorexia that they are skin and bones, you can't tell if someone has an eating disorder just by looking at them. Or even by watching them eat a meal in public. Speculating that a specific skater has an eating disorder is not discussing the role of eating disorders in the sport and what to do about them. It's gossiping. And it's hurtful to that skater, whether they have an ED or not.

Was reading that Alena really struggles with adding 3axel and cried at run throughs today. I don’t remember last time skaters cried at official practices. Maybe due to age. This poor girl. Maybe her coaches should remove 3axel until more consistent for her.

That was mis-information. Aleona whipped off her eyes, because they were tearing up - she has "ice allergy", which has been mentioned 100 times already.

She was quite cheery after the practice..

... and she landed 3A during it, after falling once.

... and few more combos..

anything else? earthquakes? revolutions? Eteri making borsch out of their bones?

You better go attack all the posters that are at official practices and posting details—since they are not reporting what you claim as fact. All I’ve seen are posts of concern for her. Coach says no injury and reports coach says ice quality is fine and not reason for Alenas struggles. I guess coach is probably not right either though.

Are you? I hope you have a brain and realize there’s a post between these two comments. Either that or you’re obsessively reading only my posts. Maybe you are just blind and didn’t realize my first post was quoted and responded to. Either way, continue on. Your ridiculous attempt to be snarky was a fail.

Do you have any links or sources to prove your words? If you have them, post them here. If not - it's just pointless gossiping.

It’s not gossip. And if you’re so up on Russian media, you’d see the links yourself. Now go find them.

At the 2009 US Nationals which I saw live and in person, before her free skate Mirai Nagasu was in tears, and it looked like she did not want to skate.

She was dealing with the pressure of defending her title, an ankle injury, as well as a growth spurt which dramatically changed her ability to jump with the same confidence she had a year earlier.

Nagasu ended up skating pretty well, but she was dinged for under-rotating almost every jump. A sign of things to come!

There is a lot of discussion here about Trusova having only jumps, her PCS are too high, she will get injured, she will lose her jumps, etc. In 2018 Nathan Chen was in the same boat- 6 quads but hardly any artistry, yet he was getting very high PCS. I don’t recall reading similar criticism of his skating or his marks. His weaknesses were conveniently ignored. Why? Due to his gender or his country or his coach? (After all Trusova is coached by the evil Eteri- sarcasm of course)

This young lady is doing what no other lady has done. She is pushing the envelope, and changing the sport. We will see skaters from other countries doing quads in the 2022 Olympics - may be even earlier. Why not appreciate her spunk, her ability, what she is doing right now and let her develop over the years instead of slamming her?

You don’t recall Nathan ever getting criticism for his skating skills or overly high PCS when he first started, or anyone worrying about his injuries? Sorry, but either you weren’t paying attention or you’ve simply forgotten. This is not a gender issue. Nathan’s weaknesses were never conveniently ignored. His PCS was criticized as inflated from the very beginning.

I can appreciate Trusova’s spunk, fantastic athleticism, and historic achievements - and think she’s a great kid as well as a super athlete - while still disliking the direction the sport is heading and taking issue with the judges who award her PCS and GOE that IMO doesn’t reflect reality.

It's funny you say that, @LarrySK8 . After watching Skate Canada and the PCS awarded on the ladies side, I want the singles SP to be more like the rhythm dance with a set pattern the skaters have to execute within their SP.

It would be great to have more objective ways to measure ice coverage and skating skills.

The GOE feature has been an amazingly effective tool to reward / penalize jump and spin technique.

It's a shame skating skills and transitions aren't similarly rewarded/penalized. I don't mean base value and GOE, but simply concrete and objective valuation completely independent from country, base value and consistency.

Would it not be interesting to do a PCS competition Chen v Hanyu? Pick identical music, limit it to triples and 4 spins and footwork and let them have at it.

You're kidding right? There's no contest; esp. since most US male skaters look like they're performing "with a stick up....!" :puppet: There are a few exceptions like Brown, Eldridge, Galindo, & maybe Abbot, but for the most part other countries seem to have our number artistically IMO due to wanting a more "masculine skate" from the guys! :judge:

I'm not so sure that Hanyu would wipe the floor with Nathan in a strictly PCS contest.

Hanyu has great speed and edges, wonderful flowout on jumps. But Nathan has superior upper body carriage, better usage of arms and better dancing skills. Hanyu's body carriage is rather loose and he skates with his head down... a lot. I also find Nathan more of an interesting artist, attempting a greater variety of styles, while Hanyu is rather one-note.

It would be a close contest, IMO.

Can we just chill the F*ck out on this thread? Stop blaming FSU members for accepting eating disorders @Aerobicidal and the rest of you can bog off with your inane gossiping and bickering.
B*I*N*G*O ! It's reminiscent of all the BS yesteryear about Rachael Flatt's figure. Let's talk about the amazing talent of this young lady, her spunk, her charm, her cute dog Tina, and of course her trademark lengthy hair. As for the rest, I think I can best put it this way: https://imgur.com/a/yJcUwwE

Posting this here [From Russia with love thread] even though Alysa Liu is mentioned...

Pretty much a redux of the discussion that's been on here for years but nice to see a general interest skating article in a big news outlet.
@zigzig or anyone else with a WSJ subscription, can you post a relevant excerpt?
Replying to my own post... I just saw on Twitter that the Wall Street Journal's paywall is down through tomorrow (Nov. 11) so I was able to read Louise Radnofsky's article (she also quotes two of the older generation of coaches -- spin specialist Evelyn Kramer and Linda Leaver, Boitano's longtime coach). Here are 2 key excerpts:
The [quad] jumps have their fans, who see them as a kind of girl power. “Women all over the world are saying, we’re not second to men,” said Tom Zakrajsek, a coach who has taught many male skaters quads, and worked last year with a Korean girl, You Young, on a quadruple Salchow.
But even he admits “it’s uncharted territory.” There are decades of data on male skaters who acquire skills steadily as children, ramping them up when they well along in their adolescence. Nobody knows how it will play out for girls who are prepubescent now.
... <snip> ... Better technique and boots can reduce the wear and tear that plagued earlier generations of skaters. The Russians, he [Zakrajsek] said, are “wicked strong, like, so strong…they’re not just lean. Their bodies can handle this; it’s why they’re doing it” with an eye to having it down cold at the 2022 Olympic Games.
He’s also convinced that if skaters learn a skill young they can keep it into adulthood. “The point is, it’s in your muscles, so as long as you keep stimulating the pathway, it stays,” he said.
Still, he warns, for skaters seeking to emulate the Russians it will require an even earlier commitment to the sport in order to lock in triple jumps at 10 years old and then move on to the years required to master the timing and takeoff for quads.
William Sands, a kinesiologist who has focused on gymnasts, agrees with Zakrajsek’s theory of durability. Learning complex skills when young is not only more effective, he says, it’s beneficial because the inevitable falling occurs when the athlete is lighter and less likely to get badly hurt.
He also says that female skaters are always going to have a trickier time with growth than male skaters, but like female gymnasts, they will likely “still continue to progress because they have a huge backlog of skill that allows them to modify.”
Except when they can’t. Sometimes an “overwhelming” weight change will exceed that capacity, he acknowledged, and it will be completely outside of the skater’s control.

Most of them aren’t real quads. They do almost a full rotation on the ice before even getting in the air. It’s a mess and the GOE for these jumps should automatically be in the negatives since there’s no regulations for pre-rotation (yet).
