The Shoma Uno fan thread - Go for número UNO!

Numero dos is pretty good, too! Although this season's programs aren't my favorite of his in terms of music and choreography, he really uses his whole body to express the music. I think he's fabulous and can't wait to see where he takes his skating from here. And I'm not talking about quads.

Squeeee! I've never been so excited about sports. I'm so glad this is the first Olympics I've watched in its entirety. I was literally squealing and clapping and jumping up and down at the end of the event! (eta: And I am *not* an emotive person!)

Way to go, Shoma!! :D

Quite a way to end the men's event. He had a lot of tough acts to follow but he rose to the occasion and delivered a compelling performance (and I hate Nessun Dorma too!).

I'm not familiar with the points system but would Shoma have beaten Hanyu in the long program had he fully rotated the quad loop at the beginning of his program?

Woohoo!! Shoma somewhat won the SILVER! Congraturations! Hope a gold in Beijin! :D :respec:

Interview with Shoma at the mixed zone just after the podium:
He saw all of the top skaters' skates, so he knew all the placements of the contenders. He thought he could have won the gold if he skated perfectly. After the fall on the opening 4Lo, (bitter) laughter came up in his mind naturally. And then he thought "Let's go! I'll do my best from here." He said he felt calm and was not nervous at all throughout the program.

I am so impressed! Shoma fell on his very first jump, the quad loop. He went on to win the silver medal with a stellar performance after that fall. Congrats Shoma!

He is so young and looks even younger. He is already so artistic. Where can he go after this technically? It will be interesting to watch him (and Jin, Chen, Zhou) in the next quad.

You are right Vincent is very promising! The next quad seems very exciting!

I don't understand Japanese so I don't know if it's trying to tell me I'm geoblocked or is there a problem with my flash player or something, but here's an alternative link (no comm)

The 4Lo was actually called fully rotated (protocol) with BV of 12 points, so when you deduct the -GOE and the 1 point fall deduction you're still left with 7 points.

Had he landed the 4Lo with +GOE and scored about what he did with his 4F (BV 12.3 + GOE 1.57) that still would not have been enough.

In the final result, Shoma was almost 11 points behind Hanyu because of
a) Yuzu's lead in the SP and
b) almost 4 point gap in PCS (although that maybe would've been a bit closer had Shoma not fallen on the loop, who knows)

Personally I didn't feel today's performance was Shoma's prime as a skater. It was like somewhat landed on the podium safely. I'm expecting more from him in the next Olys cycle. This is a startline in the true sense. Go Shoma!

Oh I see, so his 4Lo wasn't downgraded then. Thanks for that.

I, too, was a bit surprised it didn't get a UR call. But rewatching it, I guess it was more borderline UR than clear UR, so benefit of the doubt and all that.

Also, I'm actually glad there were no overly strict UR/downgrade calls here across the board, like there sometimes is. (Or if they were, I didn't take notice.)

I think they tech panel were generally fairly fair on the skaters - i thought Shoma's loop would be called under-rotated and i thought Yuzuru's 4S was borderline too, but the panel went with both.

Shoma keeps being Shoma

excerpts:
Again, what did it feel like to experience the Olympic Games?

S: I didn’t feel anything special to the very end. Coach Higuchi was the happiest she’s ever been, so that made me really happy. It didn’t feel any different to winning a silver medal elsewhere. I know it must be a special place for Hanyu, but I don’t have any special emotion towards it. (...)

Before the awards ceremony, we saw you three hugging.

S: I don’t understand English, so I didn’t get what they were talking about, so I was just guessing that it was about being in the same club and about Javier’s career coming closer to the end. I was in the hug, but I didn’t understand what they were saying while they were crying.
Your plans from now on?

S: I was really satisfied with my life in the Olympic Village because I got to game a lot more than I get to in Japan. It was fun that I got to have a lazy lifestyle here. But after this, I will return to Japan to practice. I would like to practice in preparation for the World Championships.

Funny interview. I like that quote about how he got to have a lazy lifestyle in the Olympic village. :)
I never stop being amused by the difference between on-ice Shoma (INTENSE) and off-ice Shoma (chill, looking perpetually bemused, possibly just thinking about meaty foods and gaming). He'd fit right in with the snowboarders, I think.

ETA: Yuzu's take on Shoma (https://twitter.com/axelsandwich/status/964839829191249920)
On Shoma basically not analysing his performances and not rly thinking too deeply, Yuzu says: This is Shoma’s strength. I think it’s strength but it’s probably normal for him. So that’s why I think he’s special.

Thanks for all the links to Twitter and interviews. Shoma is so precious, love him:lol::respec: I'd never thought I'd über another skater like Daisuke, but Shoma is well on his way. His musicality and precense is unmatched. I also love the two spitting personalities @nimi And his totally laxed attitude. I was so proud and happy last night/morning/whatever! I so badly wanted a medal for him! That's our boy!:cheer:

I was like: Shoma, you better not flake out and hand the Olympic bronze medal to Boyang! :drama: Shoma started off tentative with a fall, and continued still a bit tight (like in the sp when he was just saving all those jump landings). But with his magical tendency, he pulled it together in the final half of his program. Result: Shoma once again hypnotized the judges into showering him with so many points, thus he landed in second place for the silver. Even Shoma had trouble believing it.

It's the freakin' quad love by ISU judges Shoma. Javi popped his third attempt, so judges gave into your mind-meld skills. :p

Recorded(?) video of live press conference with Shoma

Haven't watched it but I think this thread summarizes some of it
omg Shoma nodded off in the middle of the translator translating into English for the press HE FELL ASLEEP and the photographers started taking photos frantically and he woke up again thanks to the sound of the shutters

Other Shoma tidbits:

Apparently he's very good at napping and/or poor boy just doesn't get enough sleep
"I really disliked dance and ballet," said Shoma. At his dance classes, he fell asleep during the beginning stretches. When he was in elementary school, he was asked to perform creative dance in front of an audience, and he was so embarrassed he ran away from the school.

I get where Yuzu is coming from...
Yuzuru: "Shoma is more of a puppy presence to me than a little brother. He's just so cute."
... and here's a clip of Yuzu making sure that "puppy" looks presentable for cameras
...and fixing his medal.

ETA: Wins Olympic silver, can’t get on a stool -- see this clip
