I do not know if they will be able to break through for the level 4s in the footwork. That is the ceiling I think they need to break through to reach the podium. Not 100% sure we will see level 4s from all the podium teams this season on the footwork as you never know, and the rules have tightened on a lot of things. But Stepanova & Bukin have gotten many patterns. I don't think they've ever had a level 4 footwork sequence.

They were scored generously at Finlandia... I expect the same treatment all the season as they are perceived as Russian no 1.

If I remember right they were Junior World Champions at some point.
But you are right, there is some awkwardness to some of her skating. Too long legs (a problem many of us wished we had :D!)? There is a coltish quality to some of her moves. I am not a skater (obviously), so I might just not be aware of some of her skating issues. I know that I am in the minority but I loved their Tango FD from 2017.
They seem to aim for sultry and sexy in this year 's FD and while I enjoy the moves, there is a disconnect for me between the dancers: they go through the motions but it lacks emotional connection.

Levels at Finlandia weren't unusually high, though. Only the judges' marks on the panel (though maybe not high relative to SC). No one at Finlandia earned a YY on the rocker in the pattern.
 
I think this season is showing that once again, in ice dance, the program itself matters so much for the FD. Why are all these ubers of other teams responding so positively to G/P's FD? Because Piper and Paul are clearly personally connected to it, it's beautifully constructed, the song lyrics resonate with a lot of people, and it has many highlight elements set to the appropriate parts of the music.

As a total aside, Vincent Van Gogh keeps on being a subject that touches people in all these different arenas--like the unforgettable Doctor Who episode with the Matt Smith doctor, the Netflix special "Nanette" by Hannah Gadsby, and now in an ice dance freedance.
 
Well I guess I may be the only one who feels Guignard/Fabbi have a really really good chance at winning the gold next week. Their programs looked really cohesive and well skated at Skate America. It will be interesting to see how Alexandra's levels will be scored in the twizzles and step sequences. I like S/B programs this season, but G/F looked much more smoother in person in my opinion.

Either way, the ice dance competition in Helsinki looks to be a really good competition.

Nothing new or newsworthy here, really, but it features quotes from every Gadbois team that competed last week in Laval so I thought I'd post it anyway.
“The school has gone through a lot of growth since the Olympics, teams leaving and teams coming. It definitely feels like a fresh start for everyone,” Hubbell said.

The school is based in a rink in Montreal with two ice surfaces and sometimes they use a rink in Laval as well. Ten coaches are working with the skaters - six on-ice coaches plus a ballroom teacher, a contemporary dance teacher, a theater coach and dance teacher.

Coach Lauzon also sees the advantage in the big number of teams. “For them (the advantage is) to be able to train with their competitors every day. Actually, they don’t feel too much competitors, it feels like a big family.

Who are the coaches? Patrice, Marie-France, Romain... who are the other three on ice coaches?

I imagine to an extent it's an economy of scale, with eighteen dance teams paying coaching fees, it makes it possible to have a large support staff including specialists on hand.

To be honest, tracking the developments at Gadbois this quad is just as much on my radar as is tracking who wins the competitions.

There are also Pascal Denis, I think a certain Benjamin if I remember well the videos of J and J on ice => Plutowska/Flemin and the rythm dance expert, Josee ? I don't know the surname but I think this is it.

I still wonder if V/M would have left Canton feeling as disappointed if Igor was there. I think if Igor was there, they wouldn't have felt neglected as he'd be there to coach them on things they felt needed work. Having two main coaches helps a lot in a crowded space like that, especially if one is Igor who is a strong tech coach, which Marina was not. IMO, Canton self-destructed due to the Marina/Igor falling out and it was really only Massimo and the Shibs that kept it alive for as long as it did though it seemed Marina would have been able to survive without the Shibs from around 2015-2017 as she hired Massimo Scali and she was collecting more teams and even Patrick Chan and then Gracie Gold (before we knew what she was going through). She was also choreographing for Nathan so things seemed promising then. Now, not so much. But then we know Marina is resilient and is capable of being a player again.

About the falling out, I just remember the gossip was that there were some issues with Igor wanting to take teams on his own without Marina and there was a feeling he was paying more attention to the younger teams and Marina being up to her old tricks as she has a history of removing people from their positions of power and taking over. Igor is still going strong it seems as he has a bunch of teams and a bunch in the pipeline and now has Pasquale Camerlengo on this team whereas it seems Marina doesn't have any top teams or any team in the pipeline at the moment, but maybe she'll make a comeback. I read Massimo left during the summer or before.

Well so far this year all the gadbois programs have been a disappointment with the exception of Lajoie and Lagha fd in junior, doesn't look like Marie france worked hard this year I excepted much more from soucisse and firus and Hubbell and Donahue, of couse we haven't seen Hawayek and Baker or chock and bates.

I found this quote interesting

The difficulty of the Tango Romantica section was illustrated by the technical callers’ tough scores for this segment of the rhythm dance. Many teams earned only level 1s or basic level on their compulsory sections, with even Hubbell & Donohue getting a level 1.

Asked later what the problem was on that compulsory section, Madison Hubbell said frankly, “I don’t know. Luckily, we have that guy back there—Patrice [coach Patrice Lauzon]. And he’s probably going to think about it for a while. And when I go back to training, he’ll tell me what to do. Luckily, I don’t have to carry that with me tomorrow, or tonight. He’s going to let me know next week what I need to work on.”

As a non skater interested in ice dance, I would be really interested in getting a break down from somebody about why the patterns are scored the way they are. And why this tango romantic seems to be so difficult. I suspect if Meghan Duhamel was an ice dancer she would have given an essay on it lol (as one of those skaters who is hyper aware of the way scoring and levels work).

I guess that Madison would have to go back and look at a tape of themselves to check what happened and probably couldn't comment on the levels without reviewing video (even if she was capable of explaining how the levels worked). And I also doubt that she'd want to expressly draw attention to anything in the pattern in an interview anyway.

As an aside, it would be interesting to know which skaters are the ones who pick through protocols and videos and the ones that leave that to the coaches. I imagine the ones who do study the sport are more inclined to coach after they retire.
 
Forgive the question b/c I'm sure it's been posted, I just can't find it - the rocker is the 3rd key point on the 2nd pattern of the TR?
 
Also interesting comparison now that we have two top teams at play. (This is my favourite game to play)

Hubbell/Donohue - Level 1 Tango Romantica Pattern 1: 7.99 points
Guignard/Fabbri - Level 4 - Tango Romantica Pattern 1: 8.92 points

There's only 0.93 of a point in the difference between a level 1 and level 4 tango romantica pattern. And H/D's GOE was nowhere near maxed out.

I am on the edge of my seat to see how GOE will be awarded to Papadakis/Cizeron next week because that will be the true test of how far the GOE can stretch in respect of levels.
 
I totally predict P/C will score somewhere in the late 80s near the 90s for their RD.
