Thoughts:

-I am curious whether the Shevchenko & Eremenko and Lajoie & Lagha match scheduled for Latvia will really happen. If it does, I think it could be a big deal for whoever wins it.

-I love Avonley Nguyen & think she has grown a bit. She & Kolesnik look like a closer match this season. (They're going to need to hit their twizzles). I think he's quite promising. If I fall in love with this team, that will be the first time I have ever fallen in love with a rematched team in which one of the members was previously part of a team I loved. Jury is out, but the signs are there.

-I was hoping to see a run-off between last year's newbie medalists (the Greens and Khudaberdieva & Nazarov) this JGP season, and I'm a bit bummed that it doesn't look likely we will get it. Still, I think, good odds we'll see both teams at Junior Worlds. Though neither of those Junior Nationals podiums are easy to make.

-Of the young and/or new Canadian teams, I like Makita & Gunara. Especially their rhythm dance & his feel for the tango. Galiyanova & Lochhead look ready.

-Demougeot & Le Mercier are the young French team whom I liked & whose names I couldn't remember at the start of last season. JGP Season #3 now, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they've grown.

-I'm very curious how Ushakova & Nekrasov will follow up their Be Italian number and big climb from 7th at 2017 Russian Junior Nationals to 3rd at Junior Worlds last season. I hope they will do something fun. I dread something soft & flowy. And I expect something different from both.

-I like Gropman & Somerville's FD a lot for them. I'm more worried about their tango, but I do think they really should have a good shot at this podium in Bratislava.

The JGP starts this week:biggrinbo.

Anyone have thoughts/hopes/expectations/new-teams-we-ought-to-look-out-for/etc.?

Returning Junior World Medalists:
Ushakova & Nekrasov

Returning JGP Finalists:
Shevchenko & Eremenko
Ushakova & Nekrasov
Lajoie & Lagha

Possible Returning JGP Medalists:
All of the above plus . . .
Green & Green
Khudaberdieva & Nazarov
Lagouge & Rahier

Note: The Greens appear to be currently MIA and pulled out of Bratislava so we'll have to see if they make it back during the regular JGP. They remain on the sub lists. Lagouge & Rahier do not have an assignment yet. They are on sub lists as well.

I'm excited about all of them. Will there be links or will we have to hunt the performances down on the net and hope for the best?
I think that Lagouge-Rahier are still in recovery mode. They were one of the teams I found promising last season before the injuries.

You can just go here:
https://www.youtube.com/user/ISUJGP2011/featured?disable_polymer=1

The JGP has its own youtube channel. Everything should be there and shown for free live. Videos of full competitions and of individual performances are also usually archived there (for those of us who live on the other side of the world and/or work during the day). Sometimes the videos are listed by competition on the main page. Sometimes, you have to hit the "videos" link on the menu across the top in order to see the videos. You can also just go onto youtube and search "2018 ISU JGP Bratislava short dance," for example. Beware, they post videos of awards ceremonies that have pictures of the athletes on the podium so if you don't want to be spoiled, it helps to have someone else find the link for you or to watch it live.

Plus you get Ted's commentary as a bonus...He is so fair and encouraging but also so knowledgable, especially for us fans who don't know technique that well.

I don't think he knows much of anything to add about the technical specificities in ice dance. (He clearly knows about the technique in singles). He didn't used to do commentary for most of the dance teams, and he never explains why a team receives a certain level, though he will tell you if he sees an obvious mistake on the replay. They don't always replay the mistakes, but they show a lot of replays so the odds are good. He does see the levels coming in from the tech panel and often shares them with us so it is better than having no one. He never talks during a program so it never interrupts your immediate impression, and he is encouraging.

I don't know where else to post this but as this is the ice dance thread...
(feel free to copy the relevant parts in more specific threads)

Here's the latest interview I did for ice-dance.com with choreographer Sam Chouinard.
Sam was inspiring to talk to, I hope his energy and passion for what he does come across in the article.

Link

Among other things we talked about his beginning in skating and Gadbois in particular, his approach to the ice and the creation process, Moulin Rouge, working with Nathan Chen and other skaters outside ice dance, and who would he pick as his skating partner...

Not sure where to ask this, but does anyone know what is going on with the Junior Ice Dance team skating for Georgia Kazakova/Reviya? I haven`t seen them yet on any entry list for the JGP. I was really impressed with their skating during Junior Worlds.

Has any team done a choreographic sliding movement yet?

Demougeot & Le Mercier had one in Bratislava. Also Dupayage & Nabais.

Wang & Liu and Komatsubara & Koleto both had one at the Asian Open.

Sales & Wamsteeker, Monaghan & Fourati, Gunter & Wein, Amoia & Becker, and Fear & Waddell all had one at Lake Placid.

Fournier-Beaudry & Sorensen, Lauriault & Le Gac, Lajoie & Lagha, Bronsard & Bouaraguia had one in Quebec.

D'Allessandro & Waddell had one at Minto.

Thanks! Are these in the FD or the RD? :)

They are all in the FD. There are no choreographic elements in the RD.

Very good question, Marta. Since no one has answered here yet, I'm going to go ahead & repost your question in the Russia thread just in case someone who reads it might know. (They were training in Russia, I think? And he skated for Russia before so maybe someone there might know).

The entry lists for Ondrej Nepela are posted. Interesting that Russia is going to put Sinitsina & Katsalapov, Zagorsky & Guerreiro, and Popova & Mozgov all up head-to-head right away.

(Personal cheering section: Go, Quinn & Lorraine!)

It's interesting to see different strategies being employed here. Russia is pitting three teams that could be competitive with each other right from the bat, depending on what shape Sinitsina/Katsalapov are in and how Popova/Mozgov have progressed under Krylova. Meanwhile the US teams have been kept separate from their competition. Hubbell/Donohue, Carreira/Ponomarenko, and Manta/Johnson are all going to US Classic but those three teams aren't really in competition with each other. I don't know if its the preference of the Federations or the skaters themselves but I'll be interested to see how it plays out.

And Canada is sending Weaver & Poje and Gilles & Poirier to different events, unlike last year.

http://www.isuresults.com/events/cat03108810.htm

Entries for the fifth JGP are up, and the Greens and Kazakova/Reviya are both listed for those who were worrying.

Fisher & Mallette-Paquette are listed also.

Glad to see all those teams on the list:). I hope they all stay on it.

Meanwhile the US teams have been kept separate from their competition.

Also, both the Parsons and Carreira & Ponomarenko are currently on the list for Nebelhorn. So USFSA has given all their teams (excepting C&B who probably need the time) an opening Challenger solo, and will likely get the international head-to-heads as well. The Parsons and McNamara & Carpenter already went up at the Lake Placid International. C&P and M&C go up at the Finland GP. The Parsons and Hawayek & Baker go up at NHK and TEB. And still Finlandia, Inge Solar, Talinn, and Golden Spin to go. (I'm curious if they will put McNamara & Carpenter and Hawayek & Baker at Finlandia. Or wait).

That's a 3rd event for the Parsons and a 2nd for C/P. So, M/C are pretty likely to get a 2nd at least, right?

Yes, I'm sure they'll get a 2nd; but they compete early on the GP at SA and Finland so not sure if they will go to Finlandia or a later Challenger. We'll see.

The Parsons were a late addition to the Asian Open. My guess is that the spot was available if someone wanted it & they went for it; but it might be an extra because they were open to traveling so early. They have a crazy schedule. Thailand, Italy, Germany, Japan, France. All across the ocean.

And/or maybe @gk_891 would like to try it? I don't know if he/she is on the board during the summer; but I think he/she likes to analyze compulsories. If yes @gk_891, we are looking for someone who would like to theorize how different judges could validate giving Soucisse & Firus +0, +1, +2, and +3 on the first portion of their pattern dance. The criteria for the new GOE system & positive & negative features are listed in posts #639 and #691 of this thread. The link to S&F's RD is at the bottom of post #692.

Oh I love analyzing compulsory dances. But I wouldn't be able to do so under the lense of the COP. Although the posts you pointed out to me do help, I'm very much old school in terms of how I would look at a dance.

If you still want my 2 cents (which you might not of course), my general observations are that their widestep could've been wider, some of their positions after their widestep need to be hit with a more deliberate crispness (especially their free legs), her twizzle could use a bit more snap, and I think he holds his hips a little too far back because there's some space between the two partners.

One of the benchmark Tango Romanticas for me was Grishuk & Platov's from the 1996 Worlds. IMO, this is how this dance should be skated (to be fair of course, G&P at that point in their careers were World and Olympic champions so they were much more experienced than S&F are at this time but this is just to provide an example)

RD from Linz, some thoughts.

I appreciate that Sofia and partner is the stronger team with respect to skating skills, but I found Eva and Dmitry much more compelling as a team of ice dancers. The composition of their dance is much more engaging. Sofia's is much too monotonous. I am really liking the diversity and potential in some of the Russian juniors. I am looking forward to seeing Arina and Maxim :) as well as the FDs.

LOL, I thought Kuts & Mikhailov had no personality. Different teams just strike different people differently.

Tight at the top. Kudos to Shevchenko & Eremenko for the SD. Really like the difficult exit sequence after their lift.

Levels were called tough all around, but I thought the results were pretty on target. Sorry for Matthaei & Pfisterer on those twizzles. Awesome first set. Strong second. And then down on nothing before the third set. Had to be so frustrating.

If I remember correctly, Kuts switched to ice dance just few years ago, she was previously skating in Valentina Chevotareva’s group with Kolyada and Konstantinova. Interesting, that Aleksandra Stepanova also started skating in Chebotareva’s group

Re Shevchenko/Eremenko. I like their style and personalities, but her basics are not really great in comparison with other Russian junior and senior girls: her knees work, speed, edges and etc.
Imho, it becomes a common problem for the majority of Zhuk’s girls.

True, they all have the same clipped edge quality, rather than being smooth and effortless. EI is the only Russian female ice dancer who possesses that quality and is now doing shows and coaching part-time. It might be in their best interests to employ her as a specialist and have her train the novices and juniors during the offseason when she's not working with her Academy. Some things you have to learn at 10 and not 20. Just sayin....
