2 teams out : V/M and R/F (Spain)
2 teams in : K/K (Japan) and H/B
Same number of teams as this 2 last seasons. IMO, they want that set of teams for a whole quad and not change.
They have top 2 French teams.
2/3 top US teams (not counting Shibs because they sit out this season)
2/3 of the JPN Ice Dance podium.
The Spanish Champs (half of the top Spanish teams).
More than half of the CAN top teams : 3 teams that will fight for those spots in Beijing.
But, in terms of US and CAN, they will be internal competition. Not to mention they have the top 2 in the world even with V/M not here (again not counting Shibs for this season).
But they have more than 4 coaches, no ?

This is great for H/B because strong male lead + female partner with a lot of character. And they need to train with big competition to get better.
And writing this... That's a lot of internal competition going on indeed. :eek:
(But it still needs to be confirmed for H/B. TSL is often right on those things tbh.)
 
I think skaters sometimes benefit from the politik of Gadbois but I don't know if it will make them stand out. Almost every team will be training there now.

It's actually a novelty to have a team not moving to Gadbois.

I have a really hard time imagining anyone standing out in a big group of a really good dancers all skating the same thing, as it happened until now. Im afraid they going to end up exactly like Paul -Islam did

I think the narrative of them having the same thing is quite wrong, especially this year :
Moonlight Sonata (P/C), Moulin Rouge (V/M), Caught out in the Rain (H/D), Queen (L/LG), Man's world (S/D), Cheek to cheek (S/F), etc... They are all so different. Even the SDs were drastically different.
There's a difference with Paul/Islam : H/B are naturally way more talented, he's an amazing dancer. And they need to train with competition to get better, and that's hard competition.
Worst case scenario : they stagnate.
Best case scenario : they crack top 6 at Worlds. Jean-Luc's abilities aren't hidden anymore. Kaitlin skates with confidence the way Gabriella and Maddison managed to blossom over the years.
Plus they need to change coaches since Krylova is going away. Who would you like them to go to instead ? There aren't much choices in the end...

I think we all know that you admire Montreal (and there are certainly things to admire), but I am curious why you think it will improve Hawayek & Baker. It seems to me that they have always been a soft & flowy team. And they already have good speed and edges.

I'm not sure what would change about their style of free dance. My concern is that they may lose the fun, dynamic side of their skating. My hope is that they will gain some consistency. I'm not sure how going to a rink with loads of other top teams will make them stand out more than they have being number one at DSC for the past couple seasons.

They aren't my kind of team so they will probably fit right in at Montreal and continue to develop the style they have had ever since coming up into the senior ranks. They are just now breaking onto the World team/international top ten so could certainly be on the cusp of gaining more international experience and recognitition. And I can see the larger number of top teams in training making H&B better competitors. But this is pretty much a move in the same direction they have been traveling as far as their style is concerned, IMO.

Edit: I also can't think of any Montreal choreography that centers around the guy? Even with the inclusion of David Wilson now doing more choreography there.

I don't know if I admire Montreal more than what Marina did between 2008-2014 for example, but I do like the fact that they are keeping up with the current Dance world I guess.

For Hawayek/Baker : yes, they are soft, flowy, good speed, edges, but that's not enough you need to have them multiply by 1000. And a better packaging. Their lieberstraum was awesome, but they kept it for 2 years. I'm eager to see their Tango before their FD first tbh.

H/D have struggled with consistency too, even this year, but they still managed to get that US#1 because of their improvement. I just feel like they're very good at enhancing the qualities of a team and putting them foward.

But like I said, in the end they aren't that many choices in terms of top coaches : Igor (who might join forces with Pasquale ?!), Marina, Montreal, Barbara Fusar-Poli, Carol Lane... You gotta choose one for you. I think you're right and I believe they'll fit in, that's why I think it's a great idea for them in particular.
 
Why is Dance is centred around so few training centres? It is a lot more diverse in the other disciplines. Is it to do with politiks?

Because the discipline is younger and there are fewer top coaches? And because many are in Russia? (Which does not seem entirely open to every international team). And because there is--thus far--no strong coaching base for dance in Asia at all.

I don't know. But I do think you have to have both a top technical coach and a top in-house dance choreographer. Essentially, a top team of coaches. There seem to be a number of promising dance coaches out there that don't have the choreography to stand out or help their teams reach the top. And also a few that don't have the breadth of background when it comes to selecting music in order to really support a strong dance program over the course of a serious length of time.

We joke about the number of warhorses, but I really do think you can't get away with them as well in dance. Careers are longer and the requirements in the SD are so exact. Showing up with the same music selection as multiple top teams every year--it doesn't reflect well in the long run. And most young dance coaches don't have pupils that can afford to hire outside choreography on a regular basis.

On the plus side, I think we are seeing more international expertise than we ever have in the past. The sport is growing.

Could you give an example of what you consider a program being centered around the guy ?

I don't know if I would say, centred around the guy, but Guillaume is always highlighted a lot in P/Cs programs. And I would say that Zachary Lagha gets shown off a lot in Lajoie/Lagha's programs. I remember hearing lots of comments about how with P/C they don't do the traditional "flower-stem" thing.

Yeah, they have at least five coaches + dance coaches like Sam Chouinard who do some work on-ice.

- Romain
- Pascal Denis
- Josée Piché

The last two seem to work mostly with the younger/not top level teams

Yep the top 3 seems a bit much, I can understand if either H/B or C/B are going, but the 2 of them ?
It's like having Piper/Paul asking to move to Gadbois and you have 4/5 top CAN teams. Very unlikely to happen.
 
Very soon no one is going to be able to twizzle in Gadbois without elbowing someone else in the nose.

I wonder if C/B are inquiring at Gadbois specifically, or asking around in general. Changing the narrative by changing coaches could be a good move but I'm not sure about this one in particular.

Igor and Pasquale teaming up could be very interesting. It seems like Carreira/Ponomarenko could very soon be their top team.

Pasquale/Igor sounds like an unusual combo but could indeed be interesting. What camp Igor has been lacking the past few years is an artistic vision, maybe Pasquale's presence could bring some new ideas.

Igor could get back what he used to have with Marina, her being the choregraph and him the technician... or whatever, but they made a great duo for sure.
That's a bit awkward though, if C/B asked to go to Montreal, tell that to Igor and end up not going there. It might be weird to just show up and say "I'm staying actually !" :confused:

Gotta love this time of year with teams playing "musical chairs" to find new coaching situations. The interesting thing is that this year there are more coaches joining in the game. I am intrigued by the possibility of a Pasquale/Igor match up. So does this mean the end of the Detroit Figure Skating Ice Dance program?

Some of his sources are lowlifes who will throw out anything to watch it drop or for their own end. Dave does not seem to be bright enough to be able to figure out who is really a friend as opposed to an opportunist. I may find his supposed news entertaining at times but would never take them serious without other confirmations.
