The Dance Hall 13: When You Dance on the Ice and Your Feet Twizzle Twice, That's Amore

We could've had Bach vs. Mozart (Laj/Lag vs. CPom) -- instead we have a recycle vs. a warhorse.

I know both teams had valid reasons, and it's important in an Olympic season that they feel comfortable, but I can't say it's not bumming me out a bit.

The judges and specialists tend to force them into these choices though. One dimension is just the exterior prejudice. If they don't believe you look the part, they will tank your scores, regardless of ability. So, it's a tough choice, creating memorable programs or winning medals.

Ice dance has always been my favourite discipline but am finding my interest in this coming season waning. Just seems to be a lot of obstacles teams faced in making music choices for both RD and FD that at this point nothing excites me. Am particularly bummed LaLa seemed to really struggle this year for their FD music. I am going to  if Guignard/Fabbri end up coming up with the best FD concept considering how meh I find them.

Hopefully a lot of these FDs end up better than they currently look on paper.

When I'm rooting for Fear/Gibson because of their great FD, you KNOW it's a weird season.

It definitely seems like a meh season, but as the Olympic are in Italy, I'm expecting some awesome ice dance chaos come February.;) As for the LaLas, I really wish the team at IAM could figure out how to work with Zach to find the kinds of music that a pianist and contemporary dance student like him could bring to the table.

I'm actually excited to see what ChoBat have come up with. But apart from them and FearGib, I feel like all the teams have just made really bizarre choices to revisit old programs. Feels like a sure sign you've stayed too long at the fair when you're not coming up with a new, exciting idea for the Olympic season.

I think they all know it won’t make a row of beans what they skate to (the medal podium is basically set) so they are going with what they want to show.

Yes, I know we like to pretend that Fear/Gibson have a chance at a medal but that is only if one of the big 3 miff it.

LaLa and CarPom are destined for 5-7 no matter what (unfortunately as I think they are the two best teams in the field.)

I guess you wanted to say 6-7, as Fournier-Beaudry/Cizeron apparently expect to be at Olympics. In which case they have at least equal if not more chances at a medal than Fear/Gibson in case if one of the "big 3" messes up.

No I meant 5-7. FB/C was the other team I think will be one of those 5-7 places.

Oh, I don't expect them to medal unless there's some sort of catastrophe among the big 3. But on the off-chance that there is, they've positioned themselves as well as they possibly could to take advantage of it, and I gotta respect that.

Their FD isn't new. They explored the concept before as a RD in 2015, when they also did a flamenco.
It's a little unfair to compare, as back when we still had real patterns and themes instead of just an increasingly desperate dance party mandatory fun theme to different decades, any team that was together for any significant amount of time would be expected to cycle through basically every dance style. It was enforced versatility. I'm not asking every team to bring out a program that bears no fleeting resemblance to any program they've ever done in their lives, that'd be a little ridiculous. A full flamenco FD is a different thing than a paso-flamenco SD from a decade ago, presumably to different music and choreography. I wouldn't call out a team for recycling for doing a blues FD just because they'd competed in a midnight blues season, or quickstep ballroom program if they were around for the finnstep. Turkkila/Versluis got a lot of praise for their tango FD and they did a tango RD just like everyone else back in 2018/19(although of course T/V are one of our many program recyclers this season, sigh). And if you look at the entire quad, C/B's FDs have all been very different. If Meemaw and Peepaw can find it in them to still use new music and choregraphy and explore styles, I think everyone else can too.

Thank you! They did a paso doble SD to Don Quixote ten years ago. This year's FD is contemporary flamenco. Those are two entirely different things.
