Anyway, this is beyond obscure, but a couple of years ago I bought a tiny old film reel from ebay which just advertised itself as old skating. When I received it, the label actually said it was the 1924 Winter Olympics skating!! I paid about $8 for it and it's been sat in a drawer ever since. Until I came across this:

See item #279 and check out the price!!!! :eek: Well my $8 reel is the exact same film!! So I got it converted, added some titles and set some music to it and here it is. There's a tiny bit of speed skating at the beginning but otherwise, a little bit of Figure Skating history:

I just uploaded this archive footage from the 1956 Olympics from an amateur cinefilm I had transferred to DVD. Beautiful colour and quality. It's hard to believe this was 54 years ago! :eek: I have many more to come from both Olympics and Worlds that year which I will be uploading over the next few days. Hope you enjoy it.

Here's the 3rd ranked US girl. 2 time US Bronze medallist, Catherine Machado was the first Hispanic athlete to represent the US on an Olympic team!!!! :respec: She skated with Ice Capades I believe and won a World professional championship in 1958. She was inducted into the USFSA Hall of Fame in 2005. Whoever recorded this liked her becuase it's in colour and over 4 minutes long!!

this program is almost never talked about, and it was done while she was in her prime. Dick Button sums up what was so great about her back then in his words after her skate. She was magic :swoon:

It was lovely- excellent performance. I think that hairstyle suited her too. I tried to save that clip but the downloader said it was "malformed". When I have a bit more time I will try another one.

I can't believe the 6.0 and the bunch of 5.8s and 5.9s for that performance :eek:. After the quad he basically did nothing for the remainding 3/4 of the program. What were those judges smoking back then?
 
Thank you Karpenko, this routine by Michelle Kwan is beautifull. I'm not a fan of her but I have to admit that when she skates like that she is fantastic.
The choreography is very interesting, original and skated with great simplicity and confidence. It makes it just like a breathing.
This video will now be part of my favorites and a reference for musicality and choreography.

Beside that magic moment and the fact that Button had quite interesting comments, I can't accept one of them when he says that the split MK does is the difficult one opposed to the easy one done by russians. I just find this remark so :blah:. Russians have another skating style, potentially as good and interesting as the american one. This is not the same school for sure and MK style is precisely the typical american style, but russians skaters are also excellent. No need to oppose them.

I always assumed this comment was in relation to MK's split falling leaf which is rarer than the more traditional 'Russian split' jump - although that is now almost extinct thanks to CoP. All Dick is doing is pointing out the difficulty of the move in relation to what we more commonly saw at the time. I've never read that comment as a dig at Russian style or skating technique. A split falling leaf surely IS the harder of the two moves.

To Dick, the other jump is called the Russian Split jump, just like a Salchow is a Salchow and a Lutz is a Lutz. It's just the name of the jump and has nothing to do with some abstruse comparison between Russian skaters and other skaters.
