Wow . . . that first face shot of her is gorgeous and the rest is incredibly moving, and, yes, her spins are very recognizable.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Please comment and leave your thoughts if you watch the vids everyone. It means a lot :)

Anyway, this is beyond obscure, but a couple of years ago I bought a tiny old film reel from ebay which just advertised itself as old skating. When I received it, the label actually said it was the 1924 Winter Olympics skating!! I paid about $8 for it and it's been sat in a drawer ever since. Until I came across this:
http://www.ioneil.com/site/auction/a60/a60bw17-20.pdf

See item #279 and check out the price!!!! Well my $8 reel is the exact same film!! So I got it converted, added some titles and set some music to it and here it is. There's a tiny bit of speed skating at the beginning but otherwise, a little bit of Figure Skating history:

1924 Winter Olympics - Figure Skating
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIz-cDy7sv8

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do :)

ETA: After some research, I found that this is actually the first commercially available film of any Olympic Games made by Jean de Rovera!

Marco, thanks for those links. I had never seen Janke's programs before and I'm so glad for the rec'. He is FANTASTIC. I hope he's still involved in the skating community in some capacity.

1972 Karen Magnussen WORLDS LP (montage w/commentary) Canada

I know it is only commentary with still pictures, but UNCLE DICK EXPLAINS HOW TRIXIE WAS ABLE TO BUILD SUCH A BIG LEAD OVER KAREN AND JANET THAT THEY COULD NOT CATCH UP ALTHOUGH THE FREESKATE WAS 50% OF THE SCORE AND TRIXIE WAS NOT A STRONG FREESKATER.

Thanks for sharing that!
It's the most complete, understandable explanation I have heard about this controversial subject.

 I'm certainly a skating history geek, that's for sure!!

Here's more goofiness from my collection, several home movie clips from 1956 Worlds. The clips are uploaded as silent becuase matching music to them is time coonsuming and the youtube police were all over me with all kinds of constraints yesterday when I did the olympics clips:

1956 Worlds - Tenley Albright LP (2nd)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMOrI2M1cp0

1956 Worlds - Carol Heiss LP (1st)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBmkAh2nxkA

1956 Worlds - Ronnie Robertson LP (2nd)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oF9x3SvU85U

These next few are obscure. Aussiewilly or anyone else from downunder, do you have any info on this next skater? It's only a brief snippet but still....

1956 Worlds - Charles Keeble AUS LP (16th)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptXOhwxhtfE

1956 Worlds - Hanno Stroher AUT LP (14th)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFvTa-WBib8

Waaaay before teaming up with Marika Kilius to become World pair champions, Hans Jurgen Baumler skated sk=ingles. He's only 14 here;

1956 Worlds - Hans Jurgen Baumler FRG LP (12th)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4BLpDEu7xY

Here's the 3rd ranked US girl. 2 time US Bronze medallist, Catherine Machado was the first Hispanic athlete to represent the US on an Olympic team!!!! :respec: She skated with Ice Capades I believe and won a World professional championship in 1958. She was inducted into the USFSA Hall of Fame in 2005. Whoever recorded this liked her becuase it's in colour and over 4 minutes long!!

1956 Worlds - Catherine Machado LP (6th)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etnloLI5a-E

The only pair I have;

1956 Worlds - Schwarz & Oppelt AUT (1st)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uwp6bkNGX4U

These next clips are fun. I have footage of all four medal ceremonies. Things sure were different back then!! First up is pairs with Schwarz & Oppelt, Dafoe and Bowden once again winning the silver and the bronze medallists are a 12 year old Marika Kilius with her first partner Franz Ningel.

1956 Worlds Pairs Podium
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xixav7hxonU

No ice dance was recorded it seems, but we can see who won. The Brits Wheeeee!!! :cheer:
1 - Pamela Weight & Paul Thomas
2 - June Markham & Courtney Jones
3 - Barbara Thompson & Gerard Rigby

1956 Worlds Ice Dance Podium
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLT1Sqm8-H0

The mens was as all American as it gets!!

1956 Worlds Mens Podium
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cx_Z_OoOovk

And finally the ladeeez. 3rd place went to Austria and Ingrid Wendl.

1956 Worlds Ladies Podium
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmHbwswETDg

And that's the 1956 Worlds!! What's been so great about posting these is I have already had requests for footage from Frances Dafoe's son and Kurt Oppelt's son. It's so important that we can give back to the skaters who haven't seen this footage since they first skated it. I hope you enjoy these rare glimpses into the past.

Thank you! That was glorious.
Mr. Button spoke the truth.

How many competitors ever display the "committment" to the art and performance shiown here?
I miss her on the ice; and skating misses her. as well.

I really miss Michelle Kwan.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ky_G_eAn2vs&feature=rec-fresh+div-f-7-HM

this program is almost never talked about, and it was done while she was in her prime. Dick Button sums up what was so great about her back then in his words after her skate. She was magic :swoon:

It was lovely- excellent performance. I think that hairstyle suited her too. I tried to save that clip but the downloader said it was "malformed". When I have a bit more time I will try another one.

Jumpin' Joe Sabovcik 1986 Euros LP

Not only did Josef become Euro Champ, he landed the first quad in competition. Yeah, yeah, I know officially Kurt gets credit for this, but I truly felt Sabovcik's quad here should have been ratified. But what do I know?

I can't believe the 6.0 and the bunch of 5.8s and 5.9s for that performance . After the quad he basically did nothing for the remainding 3/4 of the program. What were those judges smoking back then?

Thank you Karpenko, this routine by Michelle Kwan is beautifull. I'm not a fan of her but I have to admit that when she skates like that she is fantastic.
The choreography is very interesting, original and skated with great simplicity and confidence. It makes it just like a breathing.
This video will now be part of my favorites and a reference for musicality and choreography.

Beside that magic moment and the fact that Button had quite interesting comments, I can't accept one of them when he says that the split MK does is the difficult one opposed to the easy one done by russians. I just find this remark so :blah:. Russians have another skating style, potentially as good and interesting as the american one. This is not the same school for sure and MK style is precisely the typical american style, but russians skaters are also excellent. No need to oppose them.

I always assumed this comment was in relation to MK's split falling leaf which is rarer than the more traditional 'Russian split' jump - although that is now almost extinct thanks to CoP. All Dick is doing is pointing out the difficulty of the move in relation to what we more commonly saw at the time. I've never read that comment as a dig at Russian style or skating technique. A split falling leaf surely IS the harder of the two moves.

what makes the split falling leaf harder than the russian one?

To Dick, the other jump is called the Russian Split jump, just like a Salchow is a Salchow and a Lutz is a Lutz. It's just the name of the jump and has nothing to do with some abstruse comparison between Russian skaters and other skaters.
