Skating Photographer Jacque Tiegs Needs Prayer

Thanks for the update Josh! It's such good news that her health is starting to improve. I'm keeping her and her family in my thoughts and prayers.

You're welcome katmari..Her friends that I know (myself included) are VERY relieved for even just a BIT of good news...it was torture not knowing what was going on and not being able to have any information of whether she was getting better or not...I'm glad that she is making that road to health now and I am sure she'll do whatever it takes to get better (although I'm sure she's probably upset this happened so close to Nationals, since she knows so many of the skaters and would surely be the first one to be rooting them on)...thank you for the continued thoughts and prayers, I'm sure when she is in the position to hopefully read all the messages she's received here and on Facebook, that it will touch her heart!

Wanted to post an update again about Jacque -- I got a little lax on updates because of the U.S. and Canadian Figure Skating Championships, as well as Europeans, plus I also had a death in my family last Sunday and just wanted to concentrate on family this past week as the services were just this past Thursday and Friday...These words are from Jacque herself:

Just an update. I got to come home. I have a lot of vision and balance issues to work through. But I am getting better each day. Thank you all for the love and support. Remember to tell people you love them and have a plan.

More explanation (from me): Jacque had a rare case of COMBINED spinal meningitis AND encephalitis....VERY serious...She had to have some physical therapy, but has been walking again, with a walker, but like she says in her own words, she's blessed to be getting better every day!

Thanks so much for the latest update @Josh78. So sorry to hear about the death in your family. My deepest condolences.

Happy to learn that Jacque is doing so much better. Thank goodness she received the care she needed and that she's now at home and on the long road to full recovery! Hopefully being with her kitties will be a source of comfort and cheer for her. She remains in my thoughts and prayers.

Hoping you were able to enjoy U.S. and Canadian Nationals, and Europeans as a bright spot and a release during a difficult time of mourning for a family member and prayer for a dear friend. Wishing you well @Josh78. Will you be making it to Worlds in Boston?

Thank you everyone for the continuing thoughts and well-wishes, both for Jacque and her continuing recovery, and for my family (my Dad's eldest brother, Uncle Art, passed away at 88 after years of declining health with diabetes and Parkinson's..but his memorial was a wonderful remembrance, and even though there were tears, there was happiness, too, and I'll always remember and try to emulate his enormous capacity to love others!)

Will you be making it to Worlds in Boston?

I WISH, but unfortunately it's just not in the financial possibilities for me...if only USFSA would make St. Louis the host for Nationals and Skate America every year lol

Oh @Josh78, I'm glad the memorial service for your Uncle Art was special. I understand exactly what you mean by the tears mixed with happy memories as in my family we're in that difficult passage too of losing older relatives in their 80s and 90s. Losing them is hard, but appreciating their legacy and lives well-lived is ultimately what matters. It's always harder if they've suffered with long illnesses, or no, maybe it's a relief they are no longer suffering and harder when they have been in relatively good health and then pass suddenly. It's wonderful that you have such fond memories of your Uncle Art, and uplifting that he has passed on to you that beautiful quality of loving others.

I also wish I was financially able to make it to Worlds since it's in the U.S. this year. I will just have to save up and hope Worlds comes soon again to the U.S. in a convenient mid-west locale, though I think Worlds usually goes to larger cities on east or west coast. Better yet, perhaps before Worlds comes here again I will be able to save enough to take a trip to a cool overseas Worlds location, like Spain, Finland, or London. :)

Continued prayers for Jacque!

Here's the lastest update (from Jacque herself)...improvements continue, day-by-day, but challenges still remain:

Well good news! I lost 30lbs and haven't smoked since 1/9. Bad news, I have vertigo and can't get around. I have no balance either. It's most likely from the brain swelling. Hopefully that will wear off soon. I hate being dependant on people. I need to thank my sisters Jill and Wendy and my good friends Pam, Anita and Patti Neal and Sue for helping me get through this. Not to mention all the friends who have kept my spirits up posting on my wall. Thank you everyone from the bottom of my heart.

Jacque is so very fortunate to have had, in the end, a correct diagnosis for the COMBINED spinal meningitis AND encephalitis so they knew how to treat her. Double WOW. Also, Vertigo is nasty, can't imagine it with the other two. I am sure she is getting lots of PT. Wishing her a good recovery.

I must have missed this thread for awhile...

@Josh78 I'm so sorry for the loss of you uncle. Hugs to you and your family. Thank you so much for the updates on Jacque's condition. Yay that she's improving!! :)

You're welcome, and thank you very much Shan!

Here's a more detailed explanation (from Jacque herself, updating her Facebook page about an hour ago) about what happened to her:

A lot of people have asked me what happened to me. A virus attacked my brain stem and i got encephalitis and spinal meningitis. All I remember is a horrible headache and I tried to deal with it at home. I don't remember a thing for 9 days after that. I was lucky that I have friends who hadn't heard from me in 24 hours and called the police. People, if you are sick, go to the ER! Don't try to deal with it on your own. Severe headaches and pain anywhere in the body is a warning sign. Check on your friends! Even if it's just a text or call to say hi. You might save someone's life.
I still have severe vertigo and problems with my balance. Thanks again for all the prayers, love and messages. They make my day. For a while my world is a few steps each way from my couch.

Bumping this thread back up with a small update from Jacque herself on her Facebook page..she continues to get better, slowly but surely:

Update!!! Yesterday Anita took me shopping to get some pillows!!! I am still using a walker, but I can hang onto the shopping cart and stay steady!! Good news! I only knocked over one display and I still know how to spend money. Still have vertigo and balance issues. But getting out of the house was huge!

Bumping this thread back up again with the latest update, from Jacque herself:

Thought I would do an update. It's been a few weeks since the last one. Not much new. Balance is still way off, bad headaches still and memory losses (mainly short term). I feel like nothing has changed in 2 weeks.
I went to my neurologist and he said it's going to take a long time. Maybe somethings could be permanent. He gave me a new med to take.
Well the new med made everything worse. I barely slept for almost 5 days. So I stopped taking it. He also wants me to have another MRI.
Now for the good news!
I have gotten out and gone to the store a few times. We have kept them to very short trips. Too much action confuses me. I feel stupid riding those little carts around.
I am doing some of the cleaning of my house myself. I have to thank my friends who stop by and help out!
It's going to be a long time until I am able to drive (if I ever am able to again). So I am working with my nurse case manager on transportation issues to the doctors and for test.
I am trying to keep positive. I working on becoming independent like I was. Now if I could find someone to come and cut my hair, that would make my day!! Anyone know of someone on the eastside of Detroit? .
Happy Easter to everyone!
