Come on peeps, the man is older than dirt (in figure skating years anyway!!) There should be a cheer thread for the poor guy, especially since at the age of 30, he's having the best season of his career! First grand prix win, bronze in his second GP event, and making it to GP final for only the second time in his career.....Go Sergei!!!

Oh, a thread relevant to my interests :) I'm not sure where to begin but since we are preparing for the GPF:

Sergei is my favorite skater & there is nothing more satisfying than seeing him reach new heights after being constantly written off for years. I don't like Averbukh even a stopped clock is right twice a day - "Voronov is an example of a real sporting character, determination, faith in one's own strength and own path, which causes great respect."

Well, then he goes on to say that he was one of those who thought he should retire  but changed his mind. I don't understand why he should retire if he is healthy and doing what he loves to do. Because he's 30? So what? I hope he becomes the Oksana Chusovitina of men's skating.

You really want to jinx him don't you.

But, I will cherish his little FU to the fed as his scores where announced at SKAM.

You jinx him I'll sic Charley on you!! :)

And yes, that moment in the K&C at SKAM was special!!

So happy for Sergei! Even though I am not a big fan of his SS (he looks better live than on TV), I cannot help but admire his perseverance and his quads toes. Also, I very much enjoy his TV commentary throughout this season and in the past. He comes through as very knowledgeable, balanced and kind (without being gossipy).

I have a LOT of respect for Sergei and his dedication/perseverance!

This clip from after the Skate America men's medal ceremony shows Rafael Arutunian giving Sergei a hug and then having a photo taken with all 3 medalists: https://www.instagram.com/p/BcImk4DBP5c/?taken-by=michlmint
I heard that Raf used to coach Sergei so all three medalists from Skate America are Raf's students - Raf should be proud.
I'm so happy for Sergei, he is one of the nicest skaters - always a gentleman with fellow skaters in the rink. Hope his accomplishments at this year Grand Prix make a good impression to his federation and they will do the right thing.

Yes, Arutyunyan was Voronov's first coach.

I have always liked Voronov and his excellent jump technique married with those classic Russian lines, but what is especially pleasing about his longevity is that he has not just been hanging on but has actually been improving. He is one of the last skaters who competed before IJS, but he has managed to develop and keep pace with the more complicated footwork and spins of the new system. And the quads!

As a bonus he seems like a nice guy and he has excellent taste in pants. So davai, Sergei. I hope this season will continue to be successful for him.

Love ya Sergei! Go win a medal at the GPF. He will need to, to get to the Olympics.

Russia has just two spots and one of them will go to Kolyada, who I love. I want Voronov to get the other spot, and an opportunity to skate in the team competition.

I know that Sergei is very patriotic and I am sure this will upset him on many levels (let's not forget this is the 3rd Olympics ruined for him!). But I also know that he has had a career full of disappointments and getting mad usually spurns him on to fight even more. As a selfish fan I of course do want to see him at the Olys, I don't care if he has to wear a potato sack, but I know he will never really get to have a proper Olympic experience at this point. And of course they could still give the 2nd spot to Samarin or whoever just to twist the knife even more.

I can't imagine having to make a decision like "do I compete in spite of my country being upset about it" vs. "this is my last chance after kind of getting screwed out of two other opportunities". I hope he does a fantastic job at GPF, and I guess we'll see what Russia, and the individual athletes, decide in the upcoming weeks or so.

That's a real kick in the gonads to have to participate under more scrutiny and without his "flag!" If Medvedeva takes the ladies GOLD, she won't be able to hear the anthem! I guess all of them should be fortunate that the IOC only took away their nationality; can still skate under a neutral flag! :barrel :kickass: :lynch: :mitchell:

Before this season I could not even remember his face, but he is skating very well, he really impressed me in this GPF, I'm disappointed with his score :(

I think Sergei had the disadvantage of skating earlier, but whatever his score, his skating this season has made a statement. I hope his new-found consistency stays with him for the rest of what I hope will be a full season for him. Fingers crossed!

A couple articles from Rsport:

The Google Translate versions are not great, but he talks about gaining courage when people "don't want him to have anything good" - it is vague who he is talking about here, but I would imagine some people in the Russian Fed, Buyanova, maybe a former coach. Maxim Trankov once wrote in his blog many years ago that Sergei skates better when he is angry...I guess he was right!

I wasn't surprised that he didn't make the podium here, but I know he definitely had the only memorable performance of the night, and he can take pride in skating well yet again.
