Sergei Voronov cheer thread

Buyanova will try her best to politick for Samarin & against Sergei. I of course want to believe everything will work out the way it should, but I'm too afraid history will repeat itself.

Why would Buyanova do that? Isn't she his former coach?
His coach now is Svetlana Sokolovskaya. Besides, the guy just started in senior competitions. I wouldn't throw 2 young guys into the Olympics, one who didn't make it the GPF therefore one with little rep with the judges. There is plenty of time for him the next 4 coming years.

Buyanova is the head coach at CSKA and Sokolovskaya is her minion, basically. They hold their training camps together, etc. There are a lot of internal politics at CSKA and it's pretty clear that Inna Goncharenko's group is considered lower on the totem pole. Buyanova has never supported Sergei coming to CSKA - he had to go to Ondrej Nepela without a coach last season and pay all his own expenses, thanks to her, for example. Since she doesn't have Kovtun or Pitkeev now, I have no doubt that she will help Sokolovskaya politick for Samarin.

I would not send Samarin either even if I wasn't a Sergei uber, but I wouldn't put anything past them...we'll see what happens at Russian Nats & Euros.

Ah ok. I had no idea and I am so out of the loop with these coaches.
I hope Sergei skates clean in RN. That's all he needs to do.

I am rooting for him to medal at the Europeans and win a silver at the RN, thus solidifying his claim on the Olympic team but I am too afraid it may not happen.

With Russian nats soon to be starting, will be wishing good luck to grandpa to win, place or show! :)

I did not expect a miracle to happen this weekend, and was resigned to the fact that the worst could happen. Still, I feel awful and I keep worrying about how he is doing. He really has some people who hate him in high places. I should know by now that pure evil exists in the world and corrupt powerful old men ruin everything...but somehow I still wished for a happy ending...

A petition was started for him to go to Euros, it may be an exercise in futility, but it would be nice if he could at least know how many people support him (thanks to Katrin for taking the initiative!):

And a poll on VK with almost 2000 responses, with over 87% voting to send Sergei:

Oleg Vasiliev did not agree with Sergei being 4th either. I hope more people with credibility will speak out on his behalf.

I have a dream of Sergei continuing on for 4 more years and switching to Azerbaijan or something right before the next Olys :D Most likely, this will be the last straw for him, but I would love him to stick around & be a thorn in the Russian Fed's side. He has put in so much hard work and come so far that it would just be a waste to stop now.

signed and shared the petition......I so hate politics....I hope someone is looking into the marks but I am not very hopeful.

Sergei is currently #2 on the Season's World Ranking list, just behind Kolyada. Samarin is 17th, Aliev 21st. How are they ever going to justify this dreadful decision? Will they even bother?

Sergei should be sent to Europeans with Samarin and whomever plays higher there goes to the Games. That is what would be fair. The results of the season are more than enough to justify overriding the Nationals results and sending Voronov over Aliev, and having Samarin and Voronov battle it out for the 2nd mens spot for the Games at Europeans.

Euros will determine the OLY team, so unless Samarin and Aliev both really bomb, one of them will go with Kolyada.

It's sport, so I'll cling to a little bit of hope that it's not over yet, and be grateful that we were able to enjoy so many terrific performances from Voronov this season.

What would be really interesting is to see what the Russian federation would do in the highly unlikely scenario Kolyada badly bombed at Europeans and somehow finished behind both Samarin and Aliev. Not that I hope that happens but it would certainly be interesting to see how the RSF handled that unexpected dilemna. I am guessing they would still send Kolyada, and probably whoever was top Russian at Europeans, but I am not sure.

I think Kolyada is safe no matter what because of his track record and scoring potential. No other Russian man has his quad arsenal, so while he may not always hit all the jumps, the possibility is there and he generally does relatively well.

I'm hoping that Sergei skates lights out @ Europeans & is chosen for Russian's 2nd men's spot!

Fernandez and Kolyada will probably go 1 and 2 and either of the two russian will fight it out with the others guys for the last medal. The real test is at the Olympics when they have to perform with the Chinese, Japanese and North Americans. Only Voronov can go toe to toe with them, numbers don't lie.

I would rather have experience and one bad nationals over a green skater who beat someone by 3+ points at one competition.

Since the men's Olympic team will be decided after Euros, Rus Fed sent Aliev to Euros (still injured) to make sure that Kolyada and Samarin are on the team. Voronov might score higher than one of them (or both) so they would be forced to send him (which they don't want to do). This was pure speculation but it made sense, how else would they send Aliev who's still injured and Voronov has beaten both Aliev and Samarin in GP circuit. Rus Fed is pushing for Samarin - very bad choice but politics win.

It would be interesting to see what happens if both of the youngsters implode at Europeans; would there be a skate-off of some sort at home for the Oly spot? I would assume not, and that the spot will just be handed to one of the "kids". It would be very nice though, if Sergei were to be selected to Worlds; post=-Oly worlds may be a positive experience for him.

GS article by Tatjana Flade, published on Sept. 2: ‘I choose to skate’
Excerpt:
The ISU Grand Prix Finalist of the past season also looked for new choreographers to mount his programs, and at the end of May, went to Kazakhstan to work with Denis Ten.
...
Voronov already had a piece of music in mind when the travelled to Kazakhstan, but Ten suggested that he use “Way Down We Go” by Kaleo.
“I suggested another option, but he convinced me and I am grateful, again, and to my deep regret I cannot write to him now or call him and tell him, ‘Denis, you were right,'” said Voronov. “We had an interesting, creative discussion. I gave in and now I understand how right that was. He did the music. Everything was done to his taste. I couldn’t dream of anyone better to have done my program.”
“Probably, what I want most of all, is that the figure skating world, and not only the figure skating world, but wherever I perform, can see how talented and versatile Denis was,” he continued. “He was not only a well-known and successful athlete, but also a choreographer. He was a person with taste and his own qualities, with a highly developed intellect, which is, believe me, not unimportant in our sport. I think, and again I’m not flattering, I looked up to him and now I’m watching his performances often, because there is a lot to learn from him.”
The new short program is set to “Appassionata” by Secret Garden and it was Voronov’s choice. The program was choreographed by Artur Gachinski. Maxim Zavozin also worked on it, polishing it up.
