Royalty Thread #9. Welcome Archie, the red headed heir, don’t care!

There's a world of difference between the Liechtenstein monarchy and the British monarchy though. Liechtenstein itself is barely on the news in Germany, if at all. I don't recall that it ever was.

Yep, a very under-stated royal family who rule over a tiny principality at that, situated in the alps between Austria and Switzerland. It's quite a picturesque place: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liechtenstein
The other thing about the Liechtensteins which sets them apart is: they are the wealthiest royal family in Europe (due to a legacy of centuries of banking wealth maintained via close ties to the church and major ruling benefactors). I'm sure it's cool to be wealthy and under-the-radar, which this family has apparently made an art out of accomplishing. No Monaco-like royal family scandals, squabbles, and tragedies for the Liechtensteins! :D

The specific similarities to Meghan & Harry, and the main reason I mention Max and Angela are: Max is the second son of the current Prince of Liechtenstein (it's a constitutional monarchy). Max fell in love with an older woman of color (Angela, a fashion designer, is 11 years older than Max, but she hadn't been married before). They met in 1997 in New York City, while he was attending school there. She was a fashion designer with her own company. They became friends and soon after, fell in love.

Probably if Angela had not been a woman of color, their wedding would have been more widely celebrated when it took place at a NYC church, in January 2000, since Angela grew up in New York. Most likely, though they intentionally kept their romance and eventual wedding as much under-the-radar as possible, as that is this family's M.O. (modus operandi). They were even more protective of their only child's privacy, and lucky to have him too, as Angela was 41, nearly 42 when they married, and 43 when she gave birth to Prince Alfons on May 18, 2001, in London.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Angela_of_Liechtenstein
"The marriage was groundbreaking, bringing a person of Afro-Panamanian ancestry into one of the few still reigning families in Europe by a marriage which obtained the prior consent and full support of the groom's sovereign and father, who also attended the wedding. While some members of the dynasty were said to be shocked and to consider the interracial marriage 'the end of an era', others were said to have expressed support."

LOL at that 'end of an era' sentiment  People have been intermixing since the beginning of time, even among royalty and nobility. For example, the de Medicis, as well as the Portuguese, British and Spanish ancient royal families, among others. In the present day, there's even a woman of color in the Monaco royal family (she's just not prominently known to the wider public), Baroness Cecile de Massey: http://solarey.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/baroness-cecile-de-massy.jpg

And this is aside from the fact that Prince Albert fathered a son out of wedlock with a woman of African ancestry, prior to his marriage to Charlene. :COP:

Princess Angela's wedding dress, which she designed, has similar lines and styling to Meghan's wedding dress:

Of course, Harry also made sure to keep his courtship with Meghan as quiet as possible (which he planned to do regardless of who he met, fell in love with and chose to marry). Still, there's no escaping the white-hot spotlight of being a member of the British royal family. The storied ancient history and vast global influence of the British royals is what sets them apart.

The de Medici family of Italy were another wealthy banking and political dynasty. Here are portraits of 1-2. Alexander de' Medici (July 22, 1510 - January 6, 1537), and 3-6. Lorenzo de' Medici (January 1, 1449 - April 8, 1492):

There were obvious attempts to lighten, brighten and sharpen the features of black dynastic rulers in Europe from around the 17th-century onward: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorenzo_de'_Medici

The same occurred to portraits of Queen Sofia Charlotte of Great Britain, the popular wife of King George III. But the truth will out.

I used to watch My So-Called Life years ago, but I don't remember this female actor who married into British nobility. It looks like a cool, happily-ever-after romance that should be made into a movie:

I can't find a link either. I must have been smokin dope or something. My apologies, and I have edited the original post
This has so been bugging me. I found out what the problem was. When I was reading about Harry's trip(s) to play Polo at charity matches, there was this:

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, will come to Rome on Friday 24 May for the Sentebale ISPS Handa Polo Cup, according to an announcement by Buckingham Palace.

Followed by this:
While competing in the charity polo match Audi Polo Challenge at Coworth Park Polo Club in England, Prince Harry was cheered on by girlfriend Meghan Markle, marking the first time they’ve attended a public event together.

I thought they were talking about the same match, not really recognizing the names of the events.

Trump must keep a log book of everything anyone ever said about him. Not as if he has anything better to do (i.e. running the country).
It appears from the article that he was recently informed of her comments from 2016 (namely that she would move to Canada if he were elected). I don't think there's any log book, just someone out there who takes pleasure in setting him off.

The article does, however, suggest that the possibility of long-term residence outside the U.S. may have been one of the things that attracted Meghan Markle to her future husband.

Totally OT, but I have always found these sorts of comments (Americans saying they will move to Canada) very presumptuous. Meghan is, of course, not the only one to say such a thing, however, there is a bit of a line up of people who would like to live in Canada so it just rubs me the wrong way that people feel like they can up and move because they are inconvenienced. Given the anti immigration rhetoric in the US, and yes, I know the anti immigration people are not generally the ones who want to move, but it still doesn’t sit quite right with me. Stay and clean up your own mess. Your life isn’t in danger and you are not fleeing a war torn country.

At the time in question, Meghan Markle was already spending much of her time in Canada, on the set of Suits. It wouldn't surprise me if she had already moved to Toronto by then and never actually made the comment attributed to her. (This article indicates that she had already moved to Toronto in 2011.) Either way, thank goodness both the U.S. is still a free country that lets its citizens criticize political candidates and live elsewhere if they want to.

There is a line-up? SFAIK Americans say they would like to live in or move to Canada when they are fed up with their own country. I don't think they really mean it. Especially given that most Americans know nothing about Canada (can't even name our three big cities).

Either way, thank goodness both the U.S. is still a free country that lets its citizens criticize political candidates and live elsewhere if they want to.

Except living elsewhere isn't always that easy - unless one has the money to lead the ex-pat life.

Well, if he hasn't yet he probably never will now. BTW how can Trump call anyone nasty with a straight face?

Well given that his daily actions are discourteous, rude, untaught and unschooled it does not surprise me.
He reminds me of a teacher (even looks like him a little) I had in high school back in the day.
He was an embarrassment to the school and took the term "free speech" to far. He did not last long.

Meghan didn't refuse to attend these events. The liberal press and all of liberal social media is patting her on the back for...being on maternity leave. If she were not and the Queen decided that she and Harry would be doing something with the Trumps, they would do it. That's how it works.

The Royal Family doesn't voice political opinions and the Queen has met 100s of heads of state in her long reign. I highly doubt she loved or agreed with the policies of every single one. It is unlikely that she liked or agreed with every PM she has dealt with in the last 67 years, either.

Looks like a separation of the Cambridge and Sussex charity foundation may be in the works.

https://www.elle.com/culture/celebr...prince-william-royal-foundation-split-report/

I would not be surprised if they did split it up. It seems to me to be extremely optimistic that the four would all have the same goals, not to mention the differences in their life paths which will only become more apparent when Charles becomes King.

As long as someone is going to make dubious claims about Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, I will feel free to post breaking news about Charlotte's granddaughter Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria, Smiling and in Sunglasses, Is Found Anew on Film:cool:

Dubious to you and to everyone who feels uncomfortable and prefers to look askance. And that includes quite a number of academic historians who can not dispute Queen Charlotte's lineage from Madragana (aka Ourana), a Moor from Faro, Algarve. So they resort to deceptive and inaccurate claims that Moors were not 'black' or brown or dark-skinned, and that dark-skinned people were somehow non-existent in northern Africa in ancient times. Such academics have an aversion to the truth that humans of all skin colors and ethnic origins have been intermixing since the beginning of time. And that people of all different skin tones were part of Europe, the Mediterranean, and northern African regions in ancient times. In fact, the word 'moor' means 'black.'

Faro, Algarve was under Islamic rule until King Alfonso III of Portugal wrested control of the region in 1249 and took Madragana as his mistress. Buckingham Palace refuses to deny Queen Charlotte's ancient ethnic origins because they know the truth. As BP spokesman David Buck once told The Washington Post, "This has been rumored for years and years. It's a matter of history, and frankly, we've got more important things to talk about." The palace adroitly does not confirm either because they realize how ill-informed, stuck-in-the-mud and emotionally reactionary most people are today about such gnarly issues, and because we are all still so brainwashed and that's why prejudice continues to exist.

Different skin colors and ancient African ethnicity were not so much a big deal during the 1700s in Europe. And in actuality, it still isn't a big deal today, except for those people of all backgrounds and education levels who lack knowledge or are caught up in denial and disbelief. The faux notion of 'different races' began to take shape in the late 1700s and 1800s onward for socio-political and economic reasons. 'Different races' is a man-made construct. Human history is about a never-ending series of migrations, wars, religious, economic and political upheaval, and constant intermixing among people of all backgrounds.

As emeritus Howard University classicist Frank Snowden* (who was Harvard educated) has pointed out, "nothing comparable to the virulent color prejudice of modern times existed in the ancient world.”

* "Snowden was largely known for his studies of black people in the ancient world. He documented that in ancient Rome and Greece racial prejudice was not an issue. Much of this, according to Snowden, is because most of the blacks they encountered were not slaves. Most slaves in the Roman Empire were white. Most of the blacks they met were warriors, statesmen, and mercenaries. Therefore, blacks were not subjected to the racism of modern civilization."

I don't think many people question Charlotte's descent from Madragna, who may or may not have been dark skinned. But this particular ancestor lives 500 years before Charlotte was born- and 15 generations back- making her African heritage only slightly above 1/10th of 1%. Probably most southern Europeans have more than that. And it is hardly enough to make Charlotte "mixed race"- any more than all of us are so to some degree.

Meghan moved to Toronto in January 2011 to begin filming Suits, and she rented the now famous flat where she lived for the entirety of her nearly seven years working on Suits in Toronto. The pilot for the series was filmed in New York City in September 2010, and was subsequently picked up by USA Network. What Meghan half-jokingly said on Comedy Central's The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore (among other comments): "We film Suits in Toronto, and I might just stay in Canada..."

Trump calling the Duchess of Sussex 'nasty' because she truthfully referred to him as a misogynist months before she met Prince Harry is in the same category of most of the bonehead, nasty bs that Trump continually vomits. And Trump says this days before he's scheduled to meet QE-II, the Duke of Sussex and other senior members of the British royal family. Uh yep, this is the reprehensible, incompetent, misogynist fool and criminal some people voted for to become president of the U.S. For shame, for shame.

Eys. Even assuming that Madragna was a black woman, to call her distant descendant Charlotte a "black ruler of Europe" is absurd. (Charlotte was a queen consort, not a queen regnant, but let's ignore that pesky fact for the moment.)

On this page is a photograph of Hugh Grosvenor, the current Duke of Westminster, a direct descendant of Alexander Pushkin, who was himself the great-grandson of Abram Petrovich Gannibal, an Ethiopian taken to Russia as a child.

The Duke is about half as many generations removed from Gannibal as Charlotte was from Madragna. If the Duke is black, then I am Idris Elba.
