As was already said, she dresses to stand out at occasions like this. The bright color on her and more muted colors on the others is completely intentional. It is her celebration and she is supposed to be the center of the event. People want to see her. Those people in the crowd on the mall are able to identify her among all the bodies high above them on the balcony because of that brighter color.

I would also not judge the color harshly based on photos alone. The yellow she was wearing yesterday appeared quite neon in photos taken on the church steps but more natural inside the church. Colors don't always look true in photos without careful lighting which is not possible at public events like this.
 
I liked the yellow yesterday even though it was a brighter color than perhaps I would have worn. I agree about her needing to stand out. But I personally would draw the line at that unflattering color. YMMV
 
Reminds me of last year's Trooping the Colour when I went to London to watch the parade with my daughter. We had been standing on The Mall close to Buckingham Palace for rather a long time on a drizzly, cold morning when I became aware of agitated American voices a few feet back in the crowd. Apparently a family group had just flown into Heathrow, jumped on the Heathrow Express into central London then run all the way to the Palace only to realise the crowd was so thick they couldn't see anything. We called the children over and kind of pulled them through the crowd - four girls maybe 8-12 years and brought them to the front to stand with us right behind the barriers and the :wideeyes: and :biggrinbo from them when the horses and plumed riders came past was a joy.

And the Queen looked fabulous then as she did today :glamor:
And Happy Birthday too to Prince Philip, 95 today :cheer2:

Yes, but she has stood out over the years in yellow, red, pink and blue, and in more appealing greens. This horrid neon shade may have done permanent damage to some people's eyesight.

I dislike the oversized flower under Kate's hat - I suspect that even Maxima couldn't make a flower of that size work - but other than that she looked wonderful, and the kids are very cute.

QEII looking lovely in Pink today - will post pics when I can find some. At least it dried up a bit as the day went on today at the street party on the Mall. It was bucketing down earlier today but that didn't stop people arriving to get their picnic hamper and sit drinking champers in the rain. How typically British :D
 
I think she was telling him to stand up more because he was in full dress uniform. I'm not entirely sure of the etiquette but I don't think you're supposed to be kneeling on the ground when in full dress. Or at least for not any great length of time. That and it would be poor manners to be caught kneeling when time came to give respects at the fly over.
 
I thought it might also be because they were on the balcony to wave to the people, so he should be standing so he could be seen, and focused on that moment (part of his duties etc).

Anyway, I thought it was kinda cute, the way a grandma might (lightly) scold a child for not sitting up straight or talking with their mouth full or being sure to remember to say please and thank you. I looked it as a little family moment, nothing scandalous, so that's why I shared it.

Granted, we don't know why William was kneeling and tending to George but I think that generally, there are some moments during which tending to a child should be more important than duties. I doubt that William planned on kneeling the entire time and I'm sure a couple more minutes wouldn't have hurt anyone.
 
Based on the whole video, I think William was talking to George and knelt so he could hear him. The entire environment is likely noisy with the crowd and planes. The Queen didn't respond for awhile. She only did so when it had been a bit long and likely it was because the crowds want and expect to see everyone clearly.

It irritates me that it has gone viral because the tone is the same old, same old "the Queen is mean and controlling"--same trope that led people here a few years ago to assume she is in charge of her grandchildren's family planning.

She does not at all exert the kind of control over the family that people like to imagine she does.

No. Young royal children have always appeared at Trooping the Colour sometimes even as babies.

They have always been part of the balcony appearance for its duration. I would guess that Prince Edward as a very small baby in that photo was not because the Queen would have been waving to the crowd prior or after he was brought out. He was born March 10 and Trooping is generally the first weekend of June, so he was only 3 mths old.

You can find videos of the event from many years back in various places online. The entire family appears on the balcony together for the fly past. Including young children. For the duration. They are not now, nor have they ever been, hidden away with nannies during this event. They do not appear during the other parts of the day, understandably, because their parents have other responsibilities at those times. The Queen used to review the troops on horseback and, clearly, could not mind her young children while doing so. William, Charles and Anne all rode this year.

Oh I didn't think she was mean and controlling. I thought she was absolutely adorable! A real family kind of moment.

I don't think I posted anything else about this. I thought it was cute from the get-go. I am surprised that others had a negative reaction. A lot of scrutiny to be under.

And I adore HRH. She is one cool lady.

I don't think she is mean but definitely controlling. When I read that she had to ok Kate's & William's chosen baby names I :eek:. BTW William was not kneeling down for a significant period. If he thought hearing what his son wanted to say was more important than waving to people who have seen him 10,000X that should have been his call IMO.

She does not have to approve names. There is no protocol on the matter. There have been times when royal parents have made a change based on the sovereign's preference, but it is not required. What is required is a name that is traditional and honors the family. As the matriarch of the family, the Queen would by all means be one to consult. And not announcing their babies' names until the Queen visited would be a matter of courtesy and honoring family on Kate and William's part. They likely wanted to tell her the names in person rather than have her learn them from the press.
