Jo Cox murder: Man appears in court over death of MP

Thomas Mair (52) from Birstall, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on Saturday charged with murder, grievous bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of an offensive weapon.

Mair gave his name as “Death to traitors, freedom for Britain” in court.

We have had many many many referenda here in Ireland and I have never seen anything as toxic as the one in the UK right now.

Anna Lindh was the Swedish foreign minister and the leader of the Swedish campaign to join the Eurozone in 2003 when she was stabbed to death in a department store just before the vote:

I think you can pick any country and pick the issue and there are certain people who are happy to be violent to further their cause. In the USA it will be even bloodier as we rally for more gun control measures. And make no mistake, those of us who want it are growing in number and I know someone will let loose with their weapons to make a point.
I did not know about the life and death of Ms. Lindh. That is sad and disheartening to read. I remember the murder of many teenagers in Norway and for what? These people who kill are warped.

Today would have been Jo Cox's 42 birthday. There are memorials to her planned in her home constituency and many other places around the globe.

My heart goes out to her family having to go through this so soon after her death.
