Looks like we may have another country-swap skater in junior women: Veronika Lucko, who came first at the Qualifier this week has previously competed for Lithuania (ISU bio). Her most recent competition was the NRW Trophy in November so if she is switching to GB she wouldn't be eligible for the JGP next season.

Aleksandra Golovkina-Dolinske withdrew from the Qualifier.

2022-23 and 2023-24 junior women’s champion and Junior Worlds competitor Alexa Severn has returned to competition - in solo ice dance. She won the bronze medal in juniors at the Unicorn Dance Trophy international at the weekend, finishing ahead of a couple of national medallists, but she won’t be at the Solo Dance Championships next month since she didn’t take part in the qualifying series.

It’s been a great six years (every invalid death spiral and all) and ultimately it must be very satisfying that they were able to achieve their biggest goals and end things on such good terms. British pairs skating is in a much more optimistic place than when they first teamed up.

Wishing them both all the best in whatever comes next. It doesn’t sound like Luke is moving on from skating entirely so hopefully we’ll still see him around. And I hope Ana has a fun and restful break, and is able to find a new partner who is an equally good fit for her, if that’s the direction she ends up going (even if that means losing her from Team GB).

They were at the pairs camp in Berlin only last week, and I had thought they had a decent chance of getting a JGP. I enjoyed their skating at the British Championships and they had some nice quality pairs elements but the lack of jumps was always going to hold them back.

Joel is looking for a new partner (I think he has one season of junior eligibility left) and it sounds like Isla is moving on from competitive skating.

She has lived and trained here for seven or eight years. Her last competition for Lithuania was Golden Spin, so she will be eligible to compete internationally from 7 December.

A bit of a news round-up as we're entering the depths of the off season:

• Results from the recent Solo Dance Championships:

Senior: Gold - Alana Pang (Sheffield), Silver - Jessica Marjot (Streatham), Bronze - Margot Orange (Sheffield)
I'm happy that Alana Pang finally won a senior title; she was clearly the class of this field and her Lady Gaga free dance was lots of fun.

Junior: Gold - Lily Bakhtiari (Deeside), Silver - Anna-Maria Kislitsyn (Blackburn), Bronze - Tallulah Neary (Sheffield)
A third junior national title for Bakhtiari. I really enjoyed the Chopin portion of her FD (a shame it was mixed with what sounded like on-hold music). And a shout out to Gaillie Tsang who was third in the free dance and represents Peterborough, which was far from an elite rink when I played hockey there 20+ years ago.

Other champions: Advanced Novice - Darci Rowcroft (Blackburn), Intermediate Novice - Liza Dawson (Deeside), Basic Novice - Elsie Blake Hughes (Blackburn)

I watched the junior and senior FDs (RDs got whacked by a YouTube copyright strike before I even got home from work the same day) and this was a veritable warhorse festival 2x Carmen, 2x Muse, 2x Ghost The Musical, James Bond, R&J, Tango de Roxane, White Crow, Chicago, The Greatest Showman, Requiem for a Dream and two Egyptian arms programmes.

• Looks like we have a couple of splits in senior ice dance. Lily Matthias is on IPS once again so it appears she and Henry Privett-Mendoza have ended their partnership. No announcement on socials from either of them, but he's recently graduated with his Masters (congrats to him! ) so I guess he may be moving on in life. Also likely done: Kiah Whieldon / Jamie Hammond (he's updated his insta bio to "Former Ice Dance Competitor").
• In more positive news, Slatter/Gregory and Mann/Hammond are both definitely still together: they were at the ISU development camp in Oberstdorf last week. Elliott Appleby was the accompanying coach with Mann/Hammond, so I don't know what that means (if anything) for his pairs partnership. https://www.instagram.com/p/DX2Pe2GjJKv/
• Likely closure of another rink, the Time Capsule in North Lanarkshire.
• BIS have updated their calendar for the 2026-27 season. Robin Cousins Cup - 29-30 August, Bolero Cup - 3-4 September, British Championships - 24-29 November. No dates for the Tayside Trophy as yet. The British is scheduled for the same week as the NHK Trophy; I guess that Fear/Gibson won't be as bothered about the British now that they've taken T&D's record (and if they are the third seed they probably won't get NHK) but it will be a shame if they miss it.

Phebe Bekker gave a long interview to a women in sports podcast, She's Got Game (also on Spotify). It's for a general audience, so they don't discuss programme choices, bad RD themes, whether she's loving or hating the Golden Waltz etc. But we don't often hear from only one half of an ice dance team, so I thought it was worth a listen. And Phebe's a pretty engaging interviewee and seems to hit a good balance between of being open while avoiding overshare territory.

Some things discussed:

• The importance of warming up!
• A lot on the mental aspects of elite sport and working with a sports psychologist, including dealing with the pressure especially when she started competing internationally, recovering from setbacks (Euros 24), trying to treat the Olympics as just another competition in the season, and separating self-worth from the judges' scores.
• Enjoying the pressure of a home Europeans. It sounds like that was their main performance goal of the season.
• Competing at the Olympics was the ultimate goal when she started skating with James, so she's really proud that they accomplished what they set out to achieve and enjoyed the process.
• Sounds like she had a fun time at the Olympics, but from a skating perspective she described it as a stepping stone and motivation to go further. Nothing specific on future plans; the interviewer asked her about more Olympics but she wasn't drawn.
• She has nice things to say about Coomes and Buckland as coaches, mentors, and providing some pastoral support when she was starting out.
• A lot of the popular narrative around skating partnerships tends to be "are they or aren't they"/"besties for life"/"we've just got a special connection" (and to be fair Phebe's played into that a bit before) so it was refreshing to hear about a team who are more on the business partners end of things and how they've had to be intentional about their communication and developing trust. It was clear they have quite conflicting personalities and approaches to skating, and have had to work hard to build a constructive partnership and not drive each other crazy.
• The interviewer asked how she and James stop skating becoming their entire relationship, and Phebe said it is all about skating. The non-skating thing they have in common is being British.
• Negative connotations around skating from things like the Valieva scandal and I, Tonya - and athletes using social media to counter that and build connection with audiences.
• Enjoying the aesthetic side of the sport, attention to detail and controlling what she can control. (Can't control the judges, can control having a fab pair of earrings.)
• Finding a partner and country swapping in ice dance: "If I skate with this person we can skate for Spain…or we can skate for Azerbaijan…because my grandpa twice removed, he's got citizenship"
• They didn't directly address issues around gender imbalance in skating but it comes out indirectly in places. With both her partners she had to accommodate their training preferences, switching to online schooling to commute to train in London with her first partner and then when she teamed up with James it was no compromises, move to the US or find someone else to skate with. (She doesn't present this as a criticism of James, but I'm a bit mad on her behalf. It was the middle of a global pandemic and she had recently turned 15 and he wouldn't even consider training in the UK even temporarily. )

As an aside - It seems like this was recorded in early May, around the time the "B/H have split " rumours were at their peak. They didn't talk about James much (it's not a men in sport podcast ) but I didn't think anything she said was a smoking gun or definite proof of life on the status of their partnership.


Other news:

The British Championships have been rescheduled to 1-6 December, so back in the usual slot between the last GP and the GPF.

Junior silver medallist Darya Dalgich may have retired: she made several sad "end of the dream" posts on instagram. She's really struggled with injury since winning the advanced novice title in 22/23, but had nice skating skills and great spins and had become quite a dramatic performer.

All three junior dance teams (at the ISU Development camp in Nottingham last week) and both Bushell/Peña and Karnes/Leggott (posting lots of training clips on socials) are definitely still together.

When I was studying for my "Life in the UK" test and had to memorize -- sorry, memorise -- a bunch of useless trivia about British athletes, I was shocked that Torvill and Dean did not have a damehood or knighthood, although many athletes with lesser accomplishments did. Sorry it took them until retirement to get these honours, but I'm glad they received them. Well deserved.

Torvill was on one of my practice test questions for the Life in the UK test. The question asked something like which of these was a British gold medal winning ice dancer. Among the multiple choice answers was Sasha Cohen . I wasn't sure if someone was trying to be funny or pick a familiar-sounding name, since there's British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen in addition to the American skater Sasha Cohen.

He turns 24 next week so they'll have to compete senior, and she confirms in her post that they'll be competing for and training in the UK (hope you love Swindon, Flavien).

This one's a bit unexpected, since he hasn't competed in a couple of seasons and is a lot more experienced than her (junior worlds small medallist, competed at senior worlds and on the GP). But it's great that she has found such a strong partner, and I'm looking forward to seeing them skate together.

It really sounded like Ana wanted to continue when Luke retired and there were rumours she was having tryouts, so this took me by surprise. But perhaps having tryouts clarified her choice. It would be understandable if she hadn't felt ready to move on, but when it came down to it this wasn't the right path for her: starting all over again, maybe switching countries, perhaps having to move away from Dundee and her off-ice partner to train, and knowing that there still was a good chance that she wouldn't have with a new partner what she had with Luke.

Or hopefully she spent a few months enjoying not being an elite athlete and decided it's a pretty good life.


(Now if Ed Appleby and Schrodinger's ice dance team would also feel like giving us a status update, that would be great.)

Also disappointed that there’s no mention of Leilah Patten. I really enjoyed her skating on the JGP and at the British Championships in 2024, so I was hoping she’d make it back to competition this season.

According to the Ice Dundee instagram, Mia Craig has been training in Japan this summer and it looks like she’s gained at least one more triple.
