RIP Aretha Franklin - Queen of Soul

Aretha left us so much good music! :respec:

She's well known for her late 60's/early 70's releases, as well as her comeback album in the 80's. But in the late 70's early 80's, she continued to make great music. Some of my favourites from this time:

Aretha Franklin - Come To Me

- Incredibly passionate, soulful ballad.

Aretha Franklin - I Can't Turn You Loose

- Tear. It. UP!!!!!

Aretha Franklin - Just My Daydream

- Light as air, wonderfully written by Smokey Robinson

Kind Of Man

- Powerful song, lyrically, vocally, melodically and production-wise. Written by...Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin - Every Girl Wants My Guy

- written and produced by Luther Vandross. Bonus: Includes Luther's backing vocals.

The audio version of this story on NPR had me bawling my eyes out in my work parking lot. :fragile:The print version reads well, but try to listen to the audio. It's interspersed with her singing and is magical.

I don't know if this was the same thing, but my CO NPR station played an interview this afternoon that first aired in 1999. It was fantastic! I kept driving around in circles so I could hear it all. I loved the clip from one of her father's sermons. He was quite the performer himself.

RIP Aretha.

I think you listened to a clip of the Fresh Air interview. This one is a remembrance of her life. Both are great stories.

I listened to the Fresh Air interview which was done in 1999. Many song clips (nearly complete songs of most). There was also a recording of 14 year old Aretha singing "Precious Lord" during a service in her father's church -- my throat tightened and I teared up at the power, emotion, and soul in her young voice. Rest in Peace, Ms. Franklin, you will always reign as the Queen of Soul.

Just saw that ABC is running an hour long special about Franklin tonight at 8pm. I'm posting too late for the east coasters (sorry), but maybe some of you in other time zones can catch it.
