RIP Aretha Franklin - Queen of Soul

Just saw that ABC is running an hour long special about Franklin tonight at 8pm. I'm posting too late for the east coasters (sorry), but maybe some of you in other time zones can catch it.
Hopefully I can catch it on YouTube. I'm at work....thanks for the heads up!

In the English language, arguably the most accomplished and skilled female popular musician overall (combined singer + songwriter + instrumentalist) of the 20th century.

Even when you know that it’s coming, it’s still a mighty blow. Aretha is an icon, the likes of which we won’t see again in this lifetime. RIP.

I agree: Like Ali she was a voice of a generation and I'm not sure any great voice now will have anything like the Civil Rights Movement and the Women's Right Movement that imbue her songs with so much meaning. I was watching her honor Carole King at the Kennedy Center Honors and I was amazed at the strength of her vocal at 70 plus. And to see Obama wipe tears away---she was so special.

I'm sad at Aretha's passing. She was an amazing person, as well as a great singer. A legend in her own time. The Queen of Soul, and so much more! For those interested, Daphne Brooks, Ph.D. https://afamstudies.yale.edu/people/daphne-brooks, is working on a three-volume study about the music of 'black' female singers, including Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, et al. I attended an enlightening lecture that Brooks gave a few years ago on Aretha Franklin and the power of her creative voice. Here's an example of what that lecture was about:

I heard someone speculate that Aretha's spirit was not quite ready to leave this earthly dimension, but her essence made peace with her body's battles and began preparing to pass on. I'm sure she is now singing on high in a celestial command performance. We are the lesser for her loss, but we are fortunate for all that she's left behind.
