Really nice article. Good for Nathan not reading all his texts/social media comments. That would have been so overwhelming and distracting, as much as he loves using his phone.

Random Nathan-related comment: when I saw the SOI group number where the guys are wearing short sleeved shirts and hats, it gave me flashbacks to Nathan's cowboy program. One of these days, I hope he does something like Yuzuru Hanyu and skates to a medley of his old programs. Bring back Peter and the Wolf!

I love how he talks about how much he loves skating, is excited for the next four years and wants to continue to improve and challenge himself (referencing jump consistency and PCS execution).

^ Thanks @Sylvia!

Cross-posting from the SOI thread... Some of Nathan's SOI performances are uploaded here:
This YT channel has high quality fan cams of several solo & ensemble numbers (from the Orlando show I guess?)

I noticed that somebody posted "Back from the edge" lyrics in the comments of that video. Reading them one wonders if there's more behind Nathan's choice of music than the song just being "fun and kind of different".
Anyway, Nathan did a good job with this self-choreographed program. Way to go! :encore:

This YouTube channel also has all of the solo and group performances Nathan did at the Long Island stop. The video quality is AMAZING! (Mamamiia from GS apparently bought a 4K digital recorder just so she could film Nathan at SOI )

I was there in person and Nathan was incredible to watch in both Back From the Edge and Nemesis. But the intensity and power of Nemesis was simply breathtaking live and so much better at SOI than during most of the competitions this season. He has by far the best arms of any men and I’m so happy about him bringing back the black shirt with rolled up sleeves for this program. I never wanted it to end.

It's great to hear about skaters doing self-choreographed programs. Nathan strikes me as someone who might like to dabble in that a little more often. I also think he might enjoy the challenge of controlling a program in that way. Regardless, good for him! Just another layer added to Nathan's immeasurable talent.

Nathan attended Figure Skating in Harlem Gala last night - here's a photo with Michelle Kwan on the red carpet: https://twitter.com/FSinHarlem/status/991455500947607552

He spoke to Nick Zaccardi there about his Yale plans: http://olympics.nbcsports.com/2018/05/02/nathan-chen-yale-figure-skating/
Excerpts:
Chen said he’s already brought up his ideal competition scenario for the fall — competing at Skate America in October and Grand Prix France in November. The Grand Prix Final in Vancouver in December starts on the last two days of classes before a weeklong break ahead of final exams. The world championships take place during spring break.
He would have to miss classes to compete at the U.S. Championships in January in Detroit.
“[Yale] said, typically, it should be OK,” said Chen, who is currently touring with Stars on Ice. “Those are some of the questions that I have that need to be answered.”
He has the option of taking up to two full semesters off before the 2022 Winter Games.
“This first year is to decide, see how much I can handle them both [school and skating], then go from there,” he said.
Chen does not plan to seek a second coach close to Yale to supplement his Southern California-based coach, Rafael Arutyunyan.
“I’ll try to get back [to California] as much as I can, slash bring Raf [to New Haven] as much as I can, but I think most of it will have to be done pretty remotely,” he said. “I’ll just stick with Raf and check in with him at the end of every week.
“I’ve spent 13 years of my life on the ice, so I already know the fundamentals of skating. Raf has educated me well to take the reins myself. We’ll try it. If it works, it works. If it doesn’t, we’ll try to figure out something else.”
ETA:
He has 2 more trips to Japan coming up this summer:

"Nagano Olympic and Paralympic 20th Anniversary Project Heroes & Future 2018" shows, June 8-10 in Nagano: http://www.sunrisehokuriku.co.jp/schedule/kdschartist.php?id=7457

"Dreams on Ice" shows, July 6-8 in Yokohama: http://www.onice.jp/DOI18/guests.html (he was invited to this one last year)

ETA that he's also headlining the Saturday, July 21st ice show in Sun Valley, Idaho: https://www.sunvalley.com/things-to-do/ice-shows
Make that 3 trips - he will perform in the re-booted THE ICE shows in Osaka (July 28-29) and Aichi (August 4-5): http://fs-theice.com

Now cheering madly for Nathan to succeed at his dual role of skater and student! I'm thinking positive thoughts about Nathan's plans and I'm also very impressed by his good-natured, positive attitude toward it all. Best wishes for a ton of future success! :rollin:

Jason was there too.
Where?? I didn't see him! Where was he sitting?
I posted about it in the Jason's thread: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...roll-uber-thread-2.98882/page-14#post-5359845

Because of his ballet training and obvious dancing chops, I'm assuming that Nathan Chen was evaluating his future odds at winning Dancing with the Stars :) He did indicate that he has an interest in pursuing statistics in college!

Helene Elliott spoke to Nathan for this L.A. Times article (May 7): Figure skater Nathan Chen is ready to add another twist to his routine — being a student at Yale
"I don't regret anything at the Olympics. I honestly wouldn't change it if I could," said Chen, who is a featured performer in the Stars on Ice troupe that will make a stop in Anaheim on Saturday.
"I think I grew a lot as a person, I grew a lot as a skater, because of the mistakes. Obviously, that didn't happen at the greatest time, but people aren't always perfect and it was a good experience for me to know what it's like to be in that rut, to be that low in the rankings, because through the majority of my career I had been top-six at least. So it was a completely new situation that I wasn't prepared for, but because I wasn't prepared for it, I think that should help me in the long run."
Chen has committed to attending Yale in the fall with the intention of majoring in statistics, maybe to go into the field of medical statistics. ... <snip> ...
How will Chen manage to balance schoolwork and skating? "To be determined," he said, laughing, during a phone conversation. "There are rinks around campus that I can skate at and coaches, but we'll figure out something good. We already have a preliminary plan set out so it should be good."
That plan also involves Chen returning to Southern California to work with his coach, Rafael Arutunian, during breaks. "I'm going to be home probably four months out of the year, anyway, just for summer break, spring break, etc. I'd have to use that time to really work with him," Chen said. "I'll also try to bring him out every now and then if he's available. I know he has a lot of students back in California right now, but as much as he can. And outside of that I'll check in with him at the end of every week and go from there."

^^^Sounds like a plan! Nathan is such a thoughtful young man and quite mature for his age!

I was SO focused on Mirai and Alan's dance and results that I didn't notice the light up Mickey Mouse ears on Nathan (and everyone else) L- so cute! LOL! I ALSO didn't notice until I watched again that Mirai's dress lit up!

I LOVE that Nathan was out there for his teammates, it was really sweet to see (as well as Meryl and Jason!

I hope that Nathan will one day too be on DWTS! With his ballet training, elegance and grace he'd be a natural! He's versatile though, it's not just about ballet with him - he's done some pretty Rockin' numbers in exhibition, as well as bluesy/jazzy numbers in actual competition mode so he can for sure pull it off! He's on the short side though so not sure which of the dancers might work best for him - they're all pretty long and leggy looking to me! :D

Pardon my ignorance, but for those in the know, what exactly does it mean for Nathan to study statistics at school as far as the medical field is concerned? Is this similar to numerical data?

The sky's the limit for Nathan. Skating. School. DWTS?? How about running USFSA someday in the future? Vincent Zhou can be his successor. Two well-rounded, intelligent young men w/ the world at their feet. Why not?! :)

^^^ Here's the corresponding article published in the Salt Lake Tribune: Utah’s Nathan Chen awarded proclamation making May 16 ‘Nathan Chen Day‘ in Salt Lake
On Wednesday afternoon, before performing in the Stars on Ice tour in West Valley City alongside fellow Olympic veterans, Chen was awarded a proclamation by Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams and council members Michael H. Jensen and Jenny Wilson forever making May 16, “Nathan Chen Day.”
“It’s an honor to represent Salt Lake City,” Chen said.
[Jenny] Wilson, a former volunteer director during the 2002 Games, awarded Chen with a green retro 2002 Olympic coat and as well as a 2002 pin. Wilson said the most important result of the 2002 Olympics was establishing a legacy which helped breed future athletes.
“You are, indeed, just exactly that,” she told Chen, “our future and what we wanted to see.”
Local TV news interview before the SLC show/article: http://www.good4utah.com/sports/nat...-to-entertain-fans-in-stars-on-ice/1183715920

Scott Reid of the Orange County Register also wrote an article on Nathan before the Anaheim show: https://www.ocregister.com/2018/05/...naheim-for-stars-on-ice-show-at-honda-center/
Re. the proposed ISU rule change that would limit quads:
“It’s kind of funny,” said Chen, who turned 19 over the weekend. “I don’t know if it’s entirely (because of me), I feel I definitely have contributed to that.”
Whatever the ISU decides it isn’t likely to significantly change Chen’s push-the-envelope approach to the sport.
“The sport could go in many different directions right now especially with the new rule changes that are coming up,” Chen said. “That being said the rules still allow for skaters to technically improve themselves, keep on pushing the sport forward from a technical aspect. I don’t know what that is yet.
“I still want to continue challenging myself technically, keep trying to learn new things, keep trying to do things that I haven’t done before and if it happens to coincide with those (changes) that’s (fine). I’m still trying to work on new things.”

On Instagram, a Japanese fan says she gave Nathan an Apple watch and was disappointed later when he didn't wave to her or seem to recognize her at the meet and greet. She also shares a cute story about Nathan and Karen wiping ink off each other's arms when they were signing autographs.

This Instagram fan has a video of Nathan and Karen goofing around trying to ice dance during practice. Karen is quite skilled in not kicking him when she swings her leg out. I can't figure out how to get a direct link but it's one of this person's videos:

There's also a picture out there of Nathan sitting on the side of a rink, fixing Karen's boot as his mom watches. Someone commented that Nathan's going to take to twitter ranting afterwards (like the Avanta guy)!
