So,the mystery is solved. Nathan needed a decent costume to skate properly. On some level he was mortified to the point of paralysis by what Vera Wang did to him in the SP.

Congratulations to Nathan on winning the free skate! I'm not even a big fans, but I was gutted for him last night. I'm so glad he got some redemption. He didn't medal, but he had a great skate and he can leave on a good note, knowing that he beat everyone else in the long program.

Congrats to Nathan for convincingly winning the LP! If only he did a little better in the SP, he lost bronze by only 7.89 points

too bad its not like worlds and he won't get a mini gold medal for the LP segment (because that also means the Kween would have 2 golds )

I was most worried that he would leave the Olympics feeling defeated but I think tonight’s skate made him believe in himself again (it should). He should be very proud. Is he the first (and only) man to deliver 6 quads at the Olympics? He set a record highest technical score and won the long program. Such commendable effort!

For sure! He must've felt pretty sad after his SP but he came back very strong. This will be a very good learning experience for him.

And he missed 4th place by less than one point (.42) i’m being greedy. Still very happy that he made top five, not too shabby for first time at the Olympics

In a way I'm glad he finished 5th and not 4th. It somehow lessens the sting of the SP
