Horrific. Hoping for as few fatalities/casualties as possible, but it's not looking good. :(

Oh no. Horrific doesn't begin to express the bridge collapse. Praying for those who died, their families, those rescued and those yet to be rescued. Also for those who witnessed this horror and those who are rescuers.

Di Maio and Salvini are threatening to pull the maintenance and tall collection contract from Autostrade per L'Italia (sub of Atlantia/Benetton Finance/Lux) and are planning various claims/suites against it. Atlantia/Benetton's bonds are dropping swiftly on Milan stock exch.
Autostrade is claiming to have been in compliance..
Autostrade said in a statement late Wednesday that it’s confident it will be able to demonstrate it fulfilled the conditions of its concession and that it carried out maintenance and monitoring “on the basis of the best international standards.”

Such a sad tragedy that could have been prevented.

The story of the 4 french young people that were heading to a festival really touched me as one of the group was a stranger who took a place in the car when someone decided not to go. Talk about fate for the young man that died and the person who decided to stay home.

I looked up the latest updates. 40 are dead, 16 injured with more than half in critical condition (I saw 8 and 12 in different sources). It is estimated that 10 to 20 people are still missing. Maybe it now changed.

558 people, residents in the apartments under the structure/bridge, are displaced, some are young but some have disabled parents, and have to leave at least temporarily. Some do want to leave because it is impossible to stay and be able to sleep due to noise from the removal equipment, plus there are concerns about safety of the remaining structure.

Some do not want to leave; or to at least have access to their units. They are saying they agreed to evacuate on a promise that they can go inside, but now they can’t: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xICUqFaYwno

Legal/technical: In a nut-shell, Di Maio made a statement that Autostrada per L’Italia will pay for all clean up, repairs, reconstruction. Which entity will do the actual work will be decided. Autostranda’s contract for maintenance and tall collection is officially until 2038 (with extension given till 2042 for additional work they’ve done before and need to reclaim costs). This contract will be reviewed and possibly terminated pending a number of investigations: technical, criminal, legal, etc.

For the first, maybe, thirteen years of my life I vacatoned in the mediterranean sea, for roughly four months a year.

There was a serious issue that kept me from my home almost all year round.

I went to school in all kind of places: Varsaw, Austin, LA, New York, Edinborough, and Lyon.

In a word, my parents were in a tough spot, and decided to drop me wherever I could find shelter and teachers that would keep me up to speed with my alma mater. If I can even call it that.

Any break, I would spend in a place my parents had just across the border from Italy to France. And most of the times I would ride that bridge.

I was jus a kid, but I don't remember anything scary, I believe things were different. Also, I think that bridge was never intended for the amount of business traffic that it appers it used to run over it in recent times, or that was my feeling as a child.

The dead ones are probably the luckiest. It's worse for the ones left behind, and for all the people that lived and worked under the bridge. That was infact built over existing housing. Although it's such a tiny piece of land some call it "toungue"; so I'm not sure at what point better decisions should have been taken.

Demolshing, reconstructing, contract privates or public: it's a financial and juridical nightmare for Italy.

Meantime, if the docks lose business, that moves elsewhere, it will be probably permanently. Also impactiong over Italy as a whole.

I believe I've spoken before, and this should not come as a surprise. If anyone wants to visit Bellagio, they should always take into account the hill coudl fall over. I'm not even sure the world tragedy is appropriate. Genoa alone has seen so many disasters that what should be extraordinary is infact routine.

Not so far there was the captain that had sunk the boat, had a tough time passing Naples English accent for directions, run, and didn't want to get back on the cruiseship because it was dark. Letterman has it for the records. And the list goes on and on.

Thanks for all the updates.

That's tough as hell to accomplish. I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, the controller was supposed to be public, and rightfully so.
But controllers had to front all their expenses, so they hardly did their jobs.
Which clears the privates.
And evidently, that was done on purpose.

Now I guess they could maybe confiscate, in the interest of Italian population. Still tough as hell. And what about all the other bridges? This is hardly the first one to crash in the past few years. Also, I believe, could have foggy memory, there's a bridge in Rome from the same architect.

I can't correct you (if you're wrong) because i am reading the same info as everyone else. My take is that Autostrade per L'Italia's contract is complex; first it must be figured out what caused the accident and who is at fault; then it would be possible to decide what to do next in terms of Autostrade's further involvement, repairs, compensations, etc.

Today they announced that 28mil will be allocated to reconstruction of this section of A10, because it is an important route into the city of Genoa from West-Northern Italy.

Di Maio been in the office for less than 1 month, he and his admin. needs to look into this. Right now people and politicians are emotional, lots of accusations, proclamations, ideas, etc.. Some ideas and actions that are taking place are rather hasty and not well thought of.

I always wonder.
After the fire in London I believe there were remains that didn't remain. Was they ever counted? I didn't follow up.
The amount of concrete in here is so overwhelming, they could just shut up the dogs. And we will never know if someone is claiming a missing person, because they're more likely to get some form of compensations if they lay low.

An official lower price tag is always preferable - horrible thoughts.

Oh. That would be hard to be, in my opinion. In any way, it seems you read far more than I do.

You mght be right, I don't know anything directly.

But, if I have to go by common sense and trust, then:
the contract was, I think, written in 2007, by someone that I conider extremely trustworthy, and definitely an expert in law.
The man double checked, at that time, all his work, with another person that was an economy expert (he died), and would never, in my opinion, have harmed a country, any country.

The expertise of the two has been requested all over the world.

Maybe in ten years something substantial changed, I wouldn't know that.

But say that in an idyllic scenario, it is established soon whose fault it is. Then what?
Unless a private business continues maintenace, the public would have to hire an army, which I'm guessing they wouldn't be keen on doing. Wrongly so, in my opinion.

And as I already mentioned, the issue is much mre extensive than just that one, important, brigde.

-- I'll add, just for fun, that riding that brigde as a child was magnificent, I meant it. The only safety issue was the wind, it could really shift a car, expecially if the windows were opned.

Oh my. That's half the yearly budget, ain't it? Unless they seriously dig into tax evasion and various fraudes, which would immidately cost them ten million votes, that's the way to bankruptcy.

Greece was on purpose, right?
