Mirai Nagasu Cheer thread: Return to Olympus

I'm wondering if someone can help me. It appears the only way to see the team event programs is through the Olympic Channel. I have created an account on the Olympic Channel, signed in to my streaming service, but still just get an error message. Must you have the Olympic Channel included in your cable/FIOS/streaming service in order to watch the archived Olympic Channel videos on your computer? Thanks!

^^ I enjoyed Mirai's candid and humorous reflections in the first interview. I loved her description of the team effort at the Olympics, and her in-the-head focus before her team fp, during which she almost forgot about the 30-second rule, and her teammates yelled to her: "Get In Position!"

I watched some of the US-Japan Council event the other day that Mirai did with chef/wellness author Candice Kumai. It was on Candice's instagram live, but I don't think that it's up anymore. A lot of it was a rehash of stuff we already knew, but here are some of the interesting tidbits that I can remember. The audio wasn't great, so hopefully I got these right..

*Mirai said that her diet after the Olympics/worlds and during Dancing with the Stars was the worst diet of her life, because she was on a post Olympic binge. She said that she gained 6 pounds after the Olympics, and is trying to work it off. They discussed having Japanese mothers, Mirai said that her mother used to tell her that she was too fat to be a figure skater, and then give her a bowl of food to eat and tell her that she needed to eat all of it.

*Mirai and Candice met through a mutual friend, who is a producer. Candice has been on several reality shows, including the first season of Top Chef. Mirai talked about how the producers on Dancing with the Stars were telling her that she needed to trash talk Adam and have a rivalry with him, and that it didn't come naturally to her. Candice talked about some of her experiences with reality tv and how she thought she was portrayed really hurt her early in her career.

*Candice asked Mirai if she was going to skate/try to make the next Olympics, and seemed surprised when she said no. Mirai said that she skated for three Olympic cycles, was one of the oldest female skaters at the Olympics this time, and that she had pushed her body past its limits a few times in order to achieve her Olympic goal. She talked about sitting out the grand prix series and then deciding what to do in terms of competing. She said that she is going to "figure her life out" this Fall.

Several months have passed since Olys, and I'm happy again to see Mirai has lots of opportunities offered from in and out of skating world. Wish she'll enjoy herself for a while as well as try to meet people who give her inspirations for her future plan. She earned these opportunities by her hard work. I want to say congrats to her once again. Wish all the best for her future whatever it will be.

This reminds me of the MTV Series, I Used To Be Fat, where the personal trainer of one contestant, confronted the girl's mother about why she'd constantly grill her daughter about her weight, yet always buy junk food to tempt her.

I'm out of loop. Did Mirai make a new SP? I read twitter reports that Mirai skated a "SP" at THE ICE (Sat night show) where the audience heard that the announcer explained it as "her SP". It didn't sound she skated last season's SP.

BTW she played a role (that Mai used to do in the past) as an assistant judge in jump battle at the show. And she demonstrated 3F-3T-2T-2Lo-2T-2T-2T as a model before the battle started. People reported Mirai was in better shape than supposed. I wonder if she's thinking about participating Nationals.

Yup, that's the one. I wonder if she and Adam could be asked to go to Tokyo as commentators, like Tara and Johnny were. Sigh... they may be long forgotten by then.

I read on Twitter after the first The Ice show that Mirai skated her Wicked ex and did a triple flip-triple toe, triple lutz, and triple loop, I did see the reference to a "sp" by someone else on Twitter after the second show, but I was thinking it still referred to the Wicked program, since I'd only see pictures of her in that dress so far. I guess we will know soon enough.

That Olympic Channel segment was pretty ridiculous, it makes it sounds like Mirai took this big break and now "is back", when her break (from the gp season) hasn't even happened yet. Maybe she has been in the rink less, but we've definitely seen her post clips of herself jumping in the last few months. I think that the interviewer specifically asked about her triple axel, so Mirai's answer makes sense...especially if she hasn't firmly decided whether she wants to retire yet. But honestly, Mirai also seems like the type who would still want to train the triple axel even if she never skates competitively again, to do it in a show or something. She was attempting it in every show last year on The Ice, and did it at Kristi's show. It's a shame that the system doesn't really incentivize the triple axel for women more imo.

On The Skating Lesson recently, Dave talked about going to the Westchester Ice Dreams show, and spoke a bit about Mirai's performance (he said that she skated her Wicked program and that the program itself was "a clusterf*ck", but that she did three triples and he thought that she looked the best, and that there is speculation that she may show up at nationals, since she is still working with Tom Z).
