Mirai Nagasu Cheer thread: Return to Olympus

Re: Mirai not skating the gp series…unsurprising news. She gave way more than many people, including me, thought she could after 2014 (hell, after 2012). I remember reading at one point on Twitter someone say to Mirai that many of the best skaters in the world still never get to have an Olympic Moment, and (if you count coming in 4th in 2010 and the Olympic team event in 2018), Mirai got two. Plus learning the triple axel at such an advanced age. Plus getting her other triples clean in her portion of the team event. Her shoulders probably hurt after having so many people’s expectations and hopes on her since she was 14. Plus, she’s engaged and is enjoying the $$ opportunities that she has.

I’m guessing she’s done, but I could be wrong. Going out with her highest nationals placement since 2010 is not a bad way to go out.

It's not quite #ThrowbackThursday yet, but considering the latest Mirai news (see above) and the fact that after Friday the Icenetwork article archives will apparently disappear from the easily googleable part of the web, why not revisit this IN article from Mirai's junior days that Lynn Rutherford recently tweeted out:
Continuing the stroll down @icenetwork memory lane I found (I think) the 1st article ever posted there, and it's on -- who else? -- @mirai_nagasu, circa 2007: "The Olympics seem so far away."

She's come a long way!

:wuzrobbed:wuzrobbed:wuzrobbed

I’m not ready yet!

Sigh... I’m going to have to accept it. She’s getting offers left and right. If she continues to skate full time, these offers may not be here when she’s not ready. So go and enjoy yourself Mirai! Bask in the limelight and enjoy all those perks! After how much you fought over the last decade you have earned your break.

I don't have much time for FSU right now (in the middle of an interstate move) but I've been checking in in dread and anticipation of something like this from Mirai. I'm disappointed but not surprised or chagrined. She's earned the right to reap the rewards of her Olympic achievement. After years of lonely fighting, it must feel great to have fun and explore exciting new things like dancing and public speaking. I get the feeling too that she just doesn't have it in her to keep competing right now. The struggle was too hard, the pinnacle she reached was too high. She's spent and needs a break. I'm happy for her.

How did I miss the news that she's engaged? Does anyone have a link?

Mirai has done enough for me :)

She was always a joy to watch, but she became a more powerful athlete at the end of her career.

Mirai did more jump content in a long program than Midori Ito or Tonya Harding, and her jumps were more like their jumps in terms of height and distance.

Moreover, Mirai did content that Yamaguchi, Lipinski, Hughes, Kwan, Slutskaya, Arakawa, Kim, Asada, Lipnitskaya, Medvedeva, and Zagitova simply could not do alone.

I have to say I was a bit surprised by Mirai's decision to skip the GP, if only because she was posting on-ice footage and looks to be in terrific shape. With that said, with Mirai it's more about the mental than the physical and I can imagine going back to the day to day grind of training new programs probably just seems like too much right now and she still seems to be very busy.

I still hold out some faint hope that she'll try for Nationals...though, I won't be too upset if she doesn't, she more than deserves the break.

To be fair, I don't think that Mirai ever made an official announcement, and she has still referred to Darian as her "boyfriend" publicly. But they've been dating for a while, and it's only in the last year and a half or so that she has even shown him in her pictures and instagram live (before that, you would just see the back of a mystery guy's head, etc. :p). I remember that The Skating Lesson tweeted during Mirai's nationals free skate that she was wearing her engagement ring (and people replied asking if she was engaged, and Dave replied "yes"). When she was doing Dancing with the Stars, Scott Evans of Access Hollywood said to Mirai "I know that your fiance is here tonight" and Mirai said "mmm-hmmm". Mirai and Scott went to parties together when she did the Oscars with Access Hollywood, so I'm assuming that's how he knew.

Yes, I also wish there had been more about the historical nature of Mirai's clean 8 triples, even if just an edit to her wikipedia page (I think that Phil Hersh wrote about it on Ice Network, but sadly, those articles will disappear soon). Rika is the only other one, correct (obviously discounting Mao here since she got some unders)? And Rika was a jr. Yet, you'll find plenty about random inartful comments that Mirai made after her free skate where journalists seemed determined to ruin Mirai's Olympic experience for some reason...she'll do fine if she gets some corporate speaking gigs because she'll have a script :D (though in all seriousness, she's done fine and sounded articulate in plenty of interviews over the years, especially when asked about 2014).

I think Mirai will do fine with public speaking, primarily because she has a very clearly defined persona. Her sort of sassy, dingy, Valley girl schtick might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's clearly recognizable and easy to write for and present. I would imagine all her speaking gigs would be (of course) fundamentally inspirational, but also always on the humourous side, consistent with her persona. She reminds me a bit of Cher Horowitz from Clueless. it's a marketable persona, you can see it with how Mirai and Adam go back and forth, he's always good-naturedly makes fun of her dingy-ness and valley-speak, there sort of like skating's George Burns and Gracie Allen.

Although I will miss seeing Mirai compete @ the GP series, I do think she has made the right decision. If this decision has her leaning toward full-time retirement from competitive skating, I trust in her instincts to know when the time for that has finally arrived.

I had mentioned in another thread that I felt Mirai’s past struggles and hurdles (with the judges, etc.,) would probably continue if she chose to carry on, but I think, setting that aside, Mirai has opportunities now that will help her move forward and into the next phase of her life.
Whatever comes next, GOOD LUCK, MIRAI!!!! :respec:

I will say that Yuki did a fantastic job of helping Mirai take advantage of post Olympic opportunities. A lot of people thought that one interview would've sabotaged her chances. But lots of things have come her way and I'm very happy for her. Though I can't help think if Shin Amano hadn't torpedoed her scores at Worlds she may have stuck around.

There are a few naysayers - when it was mentioned on Facebook, a couple of people snarked about the interview and her DWTS comments. I asked one if she still was still outraged at Nancy Kerrigan for dissing Mickey Mouse...

Interestingly, Mirai loves Disney. She had her Disney dance at DWTS, visited Disney world, got an award at the park and was just as an awards show at Disneyland. I hope she gets on the show Disney Fairy Tale Weddings.

Others, including figure skaters, have said worse than what Mirai said and never got the attention that it got, nor did they ever apologize like she did, but I won't name names. It got fed through the context of the US women not doing well as a whole, so Mirai and her interview was one of the scapegoats and an angle for which some could frame the coverage. Most of these random peanut gallery "commenters" probably don't even realize that Mirai's remarks were not from a standalone interview but in the mixed zone (conveniently with no camera footage). But c'est la vie. She apologized, but it will never be good enough for some. Mirai's taken knocks through her career, it's impressive to me that she is not more jaded. I hope that she gets to take a nice, long vacation soon.

Yep, they sure have, and their fan base will go to great lengths to justify their comments and behavior. There’s very much a double-standard. ;)

Oh, but you really should! :2faced: It's the off-season ... and people are bored... :D :EVILLE: :saint: :p
