B/S are right in the thick of things and he probably wouldn’t be fighting for a world/Olympic spot with a new partner (not for these next two seasons anyway).

It's highly unlikely they would split before the Olympics. Maybe after it if they don't get the results they want.

Oh damn. There was some rumor dropped this summer in the US Ice Dance thread or the Dance Hall about there being four weddings this summer - Pate/Bye, Neset/Markelov, Chock/Bates everyone knew about but no word ever came out about who the 4th couple was. I need to search because I am positive that I pressed the poster about who the 4th couple was - something in my mind is niggling that the implication was it was indeed, Flores/Desyatov.

“Citizenship marriage” i dont think thats a thing these days, Govt sopped it. We have married friends and he has his green card and he cant be a citizen through marriage alone.

Like the meme says, if I had a nickel for every time this happened, I'd have two nickels, but it's weird it happened twice.

It's certainly too early for Destyatov to file an application for naturalization, and demonstrating good moral character for at least 3 years prior to filing the application might be impossible for him right now.

Well, thankfully, Aboian is WAY too young for marriage - she was born in NH and they train in CT - both states where you have to be 18 to get married unless you get special permission from a probate court.

I hope Gregory/Pethukov don't endorse this nonsense. This is crazy. Definitely abusive. SafeSport needs to investigate the coaches and the whole training center.

Sooooo, @Wyliefan - what if it's three teams??? I kind of think it's fair game, at this point, for DL to mention NesMark - and to throw Yi/Savelev in there for good measure. This is NOT normal.

And there's no way that the USFS can't have been aware of what was happening - WASA's practically around the corner from their offices. Who knew what when and looked the other way?

While they do appear to genuinely be in a romantic relationship, the whole situation feels very gross to me. Additionally, I feel like USCIS is not going to be impressed with any of these teams and this may screw over all of their attempts to get citizenship, with it being pretty obviously encouraged if not outright pushed by the coaching team.

Yeah, I have no idea why anyone concerned here, assuming suspicions are accurate, wouldn't have realized that the US government is going to look a bit askance at a series of marriages among one pool of couples in the same geographical area, all engaged in the same deeply niche career in which US citizenship is critical for one specific goal.

@Karen-W If you've been reading my posts for the last several minutes, as all this has been coming out, you'll know that I've realized that this is extremely not normal, and not good.

I think the way Dave brought it up was strange, because it seemed like it was all in the context of Desyatov's criminal investigation, which doesn't appear to have been related to any of the marriages. But with more information, it seems he's on to something, even though he chose to say it in that oblique way.

In some ways, them being in an actual romantic relationship makes it worse? I mean, a teenager marrying her work partner who she’s also involved with is a situation ripe for abuse.

I’m not making any claims about them as people, but it is not an okay situation for a teensger to be in.

As I heard from a friend considering doing a citizenship marriage with her friend, you can get in big trouble even if you're the US citizen partner (if you know the marriage is only for citizenship). So one would imagine the American women caught up in this mess may face legal consequences as well. Hopefully the coaches will.

(Side note: I wonder if the timing of the USFS CEO's resignation/firing has anything to do with this mess - I'm sure she knew this would come out given it was right in USFS's backyard and there was a police investigation)

I do agree, at this point, I think DL would be better off just being direct - but I also don't know that he knew about the third marriage that's now been discovered.
