Jeremy Abbott Uber Thread

Wow. I loved his skate the most by far. Would have liked to see him with higher Pcs. Amazingly talented fellow, reminiscent of Toller, Robin Cousins, John Curry. Simply. The best today in my book

Gorgeous skate by Mr. Abbott! :cheer2: I'm so happy for him that he can go out on a high note, he deserves it! :respec: And I still maintain that he's the very best US male figure skater I've seen in my 4 decades of watching figure skating. *bow*

Jeremy was quoted immediately after his free skate today:

http://www.usfsa.org/Story.asp?id=49984&type=media
Jeremy Abbott, in what may have been his final competitive performance, closed the season on a high note, performing his Muse free skate "the best I've ever skated that program in competition." He earned a season-high 166.68 points for the segment and 246.35 overall. He finished fifth overall.

When asked by the media of his future plans, Abbott acknowledged that he needs some time to process this event before making any decisions.

"If I go out today, I would be happy because that's the best I've skated," he said. "I'm certainly not done skating. I love to skate and I love to perform and I love to create. That's going to be with me for a long time. I'm going to be in front of an audience for a long time to come. I don't know. I'm trying to absorb this moment and then I'll go home and take the next step to see what happens."

Abbott delivered a very stylish performance to music from the British group Muse, earning a personal-best 166.68 points and ending with 246.35 points, also a personal best.

As in the short program event Thursday, he was a great favorite of the Japanese crowd, gaining huge applause and a long standing ovation from the 18,000 Saitama spectators. Hundreds of flowers were thrown on the ice, and the 20 flower girls needed several minutes to collect them.
...

"It is really bittersweet for me," said Abbott, who planned this to be his final competition. "I have so many emotions going through my head. I'm happy with how I skated, and that was exactly what I wanted to do here.

"That's the best I've ever skated that program in competition," he continued. "I'm so proud and honored to do it in Japan. I had such a warm welcome. I want to look at my protocols and see where I lost points. I know that I could have been much higher than that."

When asked about his skating future, Abbott seemed to reconsider his vow to retire.

"I'm certainly not done skating; I love to skate, and I love to perform, and I love to create," he said. "I'm going to be in front of an audience for a long time to come. I'm trying to absorb this moment, and then I'll go home and take the next step to see what happens."

No matter what anyone says about the new system, there is still magic in figure skating. This season has had no shortage of magical moments, and Jeremy delivered one of them in that FS.

Jeremy has been invited to skate in the Worlds gala exhibition on Sunday. :)

ETA: He debuted a new program to "Latch" by Disclosure, with vocals from Sam Smith.

Jeremy and his amazing impact on skating go well beyond any medals. I would rewatch his best perofrmances over almost any other skater of the last 10 years.

Abbott is a master of musical interpretation and it was fun seeing a different kind of attitude from him in this number. I think he would make a really successful choreographer and music editor and I hope we see his brilliant influence and impact for many, many years to come. :encore::cheer2::swoon:

Jeremy Abbott ‘kind of on the fence’ about retiring: http://olympictalk.nbcsports.com/2014/04/08/jeremy-abbott-figure-skating-retirement/
“Going through the whole week of worlds, I really felt like I could potentially compete another year,” said Abbott, smiling and wearing a colorful bow tie at a Figure Skating in Harlem event in Central Park on Monday night. “I’m kind of on the fence at the moment. I really need to take some time away from the sport and really meditate over it and mull things over inside. If I continue, what I would want to do it for and why.”
...
“I learned so much about myself this season, as a skater, as a competitor, more than I have in my entire career,” Abbott said in between autographing pictures and skates indoors, sheltered from plodding rain. “I really felt like I gained a lot of momentum. I kind of want to put that to use.”

Excerpts from this week's SOI Hershey & Newark reviews that are posted in the Stars on Ice GSD thread: http://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/sho...orts-reviews&p=4236465&viewfull=1#post4236465
Hershey show tonight!

First, had a skate club meet and greet with Jeremy Abbott. What a sweet guy! Answered the kids' questions and signed autographs.
...
The other program that brought tears to my eyes was Jeremy's first number ("The Fear" I think). Just such a sharp line between his skating and everyone else's when it comes to taking skating beyond competition and making it a performance. He could be the heir apparent to Scott and Kurt for SOI. This show really missed having an MC, and I wish Jeremy would have stepped into that role. And his blades on the ice...like buttah. He's so powerful and so precise. He bobbled and fell on one or two jumps, but landed a massive triple axel that made my daughter and I gasp. Unreal how fantastic that jump was.
...
The men's number "The Walker" was funny. My daughter said, "Are they trying to look like One Direction?" They really did look like a cute boy band.
Some impressions from the Newark show: ...

I also found Alissa and Jeremy's Piano Guys to be quite charming.
...
The last few years when SOI was nowhere near me, I was most interested in seeing some of the group numbers that people talked about (but there were rarely ever videos online!), so I tried to capture those for people who might not be able to see the show live. It's a bit difficult to get everyone in the frame at the same time though. Anyway, I uploaded a few videos:

I give Jeremy credit for having two brand new programs for this tour - "The Fear" (Ben Howard) and "Latch" by Disclosure (debuted at the 2014 Worlds gala).

Bumping this thread-Does anyone know why Jeremy changed his SP from LATCH back to LILIES?

I'm very happy he is seems to be competing this season. Does he have a prep competition scheduled? Any info on how training is going?

I haven't heard anything to date. He is not listed for a Senior B before Skate America.

This article about Champs Camp that was published yesterday mentioned his program music: http://www.teamusa.org/News/2014/Se...Storylines-To-Follow-Seven-Months-After-Sochi
Abbott, a two-time Olympian and four-time U.S. champion, will make his season debut at Skate America. He will use his short program from last season, “Lilies of the Valley,” (although this could change later in the season) and will skate to “Adagio for Strings” in the long program.
"Latch" (one of his SOI tour programs) is still listed in his Team USA bio: http://web.icenetwork.com/skaters/profile/jeremy_abbott

Press release published 7/31/14 about him winning SKATING magazine's 2014 Readers' Choice Award: http://usfigureskating.org/Story.asp?id=50351&type=media

I hope he can skate it that relaxed and expressive in competition. Not sure about the song-it's kind of forgettable and generic on first listen. Some of Sam Smith's other songs are better. The choreography looks interesting, engaging, and it certainly plays to his strengths. It was only a week old here, so it should develop. I look forward to it, and I'm thrilled to see Jeremy compete another year.

I think Minori of Jeremy's Japanese Fans explained the reason for the SP change, but I can't translate it properly to understand.

This program will be 5 weeks old at Skate America? Will it need to be monitored before then as it wasn't the same one he did at Champs Camp?

As someone whose facial hair is even paler than Abbott's, I've got to say that unless he can make it much more visible, he needs to shave it off.

I'm just going to stop paying attention to the jumping problems. I thought both of his NHK programs were beautiful. I don't care where he places at this point. These two program performances alone made me happy that he did not retire.

He did what he had to do. The judges obviously had other plans for far more undeserving skaters. Jeremy has nothing, absolutely nothing, to be ashamed of. He had a bobble or 2 here and there, but everyone does. He's smart on his feet and not a "robot jumper" that's going to go for a jump regardless of whether he could possibly land it or not. He understands skating on a higher level than those that actually judge him do IMHO.

That said, seeing the NBC broadcast and Tara's snarky remarks again, I saw the EuroSport broadcast and they had nothing but praise or constructive comments for the skaters. They were baffled when Jeremy wasn't marked higher, as where Tara, well, was Tara with her oh so "spot on" (note the sarcasm please) analysis in a studio halfway around the world of how Jeremy just wasn't good enough. Makes me sick to my stomach every time I hear her talk.

You must have watched a different broadcast than I did. Tara did not snark about either of the programs. She absolutely raved about Jeremy's short program. She also said lots of complimentary things about his skating in his long program. She did point out that he would have scoring problems with his second triple axel and that he did not have enough technical content, but I think Jeremy himself would admit that. He didn't do the number of revolutions he had planned, and I knew before he finished that there was no way he was going to beat Murakami with those jumps. And Jeremy seemed happy with Murakami winning.

I can see why someone might engage in some complaints about Jeremy being robbed, but not of the gold, and I would have argued that he was robbed of a higher placement primarily based on the components score. Jeremy got the highest PCS score, but I would have had the gap be larger. But, in general, the NBC broadcasters weren't commenting on the judging. I was glad that they fit in as many programs as they did, including Jeremy's short program.

Anyway, I'm just happy that his skating was so beautiful and that we got to see both programs.

.
and this is the problem with the scoring system.....there is no "higher level" it's all bits that make points-no matter how ugly, or how many falls.

The judges may understand....but all they can do is add up the bits.

That said, hope he goes home, works on spins, steps and a quad.

Abbott's short program at NHK is instantly one of my favorite short programs I have seen in a long time. Such smooth beautiful skating with mature, gorgeous artistic impression. Everything I want to see in a figure skating program. I would much rather see Jeremy skate than most of the skaters jumping quads. His long program was also stunning. His simple costuming is also so flattering so that I watch the skating and body line without distraction of the costume. My eyes enjoyed resting from all the ugly men's costumes.

It's too bad that his beautiful skating is not rewarded enough by the judging system. I agree that he should not get credit for jumps he misses and other technical mistakes, but he should be rewarded more for what he does well, and no one else can.
