AWG is the week before 4CCs - it's going to be interesting to see who the various Asian feds assign to both events given how closely scheduled to each other they are.

Thanks for posting. Can someone remind me if Nobunari Oda will be assigned to anything at all, like a Triglav or Dragon whatever, or is he not interested in international competition? I know he has no min scores but...a little sad for him being 4th, and Sena Miyake who was 6th.

Kao indicates he is done with skating this year. Does that mean no 4CC or is this a lost in translation scenario?

I was bummed I won’t see him at Worlds but feel even worse if he is taking it this hard. He is one of my absolute favorites so if he is done for the season I hope he is able to reset, heal and come back stronger next season.

Now off to go watch his Beauty and the Beast from 4CC for the thousandth time. 🥰

Hopefully that means he can finally heal up - he's seemed to struggle with a leg injury all season.

Miura is assigned to the Winter World University Games (Jan. 14-18, 2025 in Torino) before 4CC so we will know soon enough.

37-year-old-and-now father-of-four Nobunari Oda’s post-Nationals message :):

Machine translated excerpt:

"I was crying a lot, but after the game, my third son hugged me and said "Daddy was so cool" and cried so hard, but I cried the most hardest thing ... The other kids were so kind to me even more than usual and it was really the best."

ETA - can someone translate Oda's entire post properly, please? :)

ETA 2 - I believe this April 2024 video shows Oda’s third son with his daughter (his youngest child):

From Gallagher's article, linked above: "Miura's frustration with his predicament became clear late on the evening of December 24, when he posted a message on Instagram announcing that he would be taking the rest of the skating season off."
"Thank you for your support at the Japan Championships," Miura wrote. "As expected, I had strong feelings about this competition, and I thought about it more than ever before, practiced, and worked hard.
"However, the result did not go well and it ended in an instant, and it was a competition that made me realize that skating is difficult.
"I still can't process the situation, but I received encouragement from friends and others, and I was able to realize once again how blessed I am to have those around me," Miura continued.
"For the time being, I will take a break from skating for the rest of the year so that I don't come to hate it, and I will come back next year with a fresh mind and do my best.
"Thank you for all your support."
Sota Yamamoto and Shun Sato are the 1st listed alternates for the Winter University Games and 4CC, respectively.

ETA: If Sato would prefer not to do the Asian Winter Games in Harbin (Feb. 10-13) & 4CC in Seoul (Feb. 19-23) so close together, Sota Yamamoto is the 2nd alternate (after Miura) for the former competition.

The Japan Skating Federation held a board meeting in Tokyo on the 25th, and it was reported and approved that Kaori Sakamoto (24, Sysmex), who won the All Japan Figure Skating Championships four times in a row, will decline to participate in the "Road to 26 Trophy" (February 19th and 20th, 2025, Italy), a test event for the 2026 Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo Olympics. Hana Yoshida (19, Kinoshita Academy) will be sent instead.

One man and one woman will be sent to the test tournament. On the 22nd, when the All Japan Championships ended, the sending of Sakamoto and male competitor Sota Yamamoto (24, Chukyo University) was announced, but after the tournament Sakamoto reportedly conveyed to the federation's training department that she wanted to prioritize preparations for the World Championships (March 24-30, 2025, Boston, USA), where she will be aiming for her fourth consecutive victory for the first time in 66 years. Sakamoto is also scheduled to participate in the Winter Asian Games (February 7-14, 2025, Harbin, China).

The article also lists the Challenge Cup (February 13-16, 2025, Netherlands) assignments: Sena Miyake, Mako Yamashita, Rinka Watanabe and Rion Sumiyoshi

I hope Saki Miyake (profile: https://www.fujitv.co.jp/sports/skate/figure/skater/SakiMIYAKE.html), who trains with Kaori and Mai, will get her first international opportunity at some point - machine translated excerpts from the first part of this subscription article:
At the All Japan Figure Skating Championships (December 20-23, Towa Yakuhin RACTAB Dome, Osaka), Miyake Saki (22, Okayama University of Science), competing for the sixth time in four consecutive years, placed ninth overall in the women's competition, ensuring her return to the training athlete list for next season. She delivered a flawless performance in the short program (SP), and on this stage, which marked the culmination of her year's training, she set a new personal best, along with her total score. We will be sharing the behind-the-scenes tale as "Ice Story," with the perspective of fellow student Mihara Mai (25, Sysmex)
Born November 23, 2002 in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. Started competing at the age of 7. Placed 12th in the 2019 All Japan Championships as a second-year student at Okayama University of Science High School. Went on to Okayama University of Science, and joined Kobe Club in the spring of 2022 at the recommendation of Sakamoto Kaori. In her first year after the transfer, she placed 5th in the short program at the All Japan Championships. Won her fourth consecutive title at the Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu Championships in October 2012. Won her first title at the Western Japan Championships in November of the same year, making it her fourth consecutive year competing in the All Japan Championships. She is 155 cm tall.
"She has a boat license and her hobby is boat fishing. She has visited more than 15 aquariums."

ETA - can someone translate Oda's entire post properly, please?
Nobunari Oda “Thank you” posting full translation.

This was the best Nationals ever! I had so much fun!
Thank you so much for your encouragements!

What made this Nationals so special was the fact that since it was held in my hometown, my family and my supporters were able to share the same view! It is my conviction that to show one’s gratitude, one must show it by the performance on the ice (I really believe in this), if even a small part of this conviction had been felt, it brings me joy.

I cried a lot, but I bawled the most when after my performance, my third son asked me to pick him up and said “Daddy, you did GREAT.” in my arms. Did we bawl together! Mommy, thank you for raising our kids the right way! My other kids also treated me much more kindly than usual, too and it was fantastic experience!

It is not always that I enjoyed such success, I suffered much more failures than success. There is a saying “Road to success is built on a talent which will always strive to be better, no matter how many failures you suffer.” I feel I finally gained some insight on how not to let failures lead to discouragement and despair.

The question I received most was “What do you want to convey to skaters coming up?” I did not have prepared answer to this query, but what I want to convey is this, “Whatever setbacks you suffer, grit your teeth dust yourself off, and try your best again. There are many people who are watching and applauding your efforts.”

I will do my level best at National Sports competition, next month.

Kao Miura did Insta-Live today and talked about the friendships with Ilia Malinin.
According to Kao, Ilia praised Kao's free skate at Skate America. Ilia often encouraged him saying ”Gamba! (Go for it!)” Ilia is so casual off-ice but so amazing on-ice.

Then Ilia wrote a comment on the screen of kao’s Insta-Live using quite a formal Japanese expression "お役に立てて嬉しいです(I am glad to be of your service)" ←where did he learn this!? 😂
