Hurricane Irma

I just saw a video from Barbuda Island when the hurricane hit, and it was truly frightening.

The latest radar imagery shows the eye of Irma is now approaching St Thomas in the Virgin Islands width sustained winds of 185-190 mph with gusts likely approaching 210-220 mph....

I've been watching it on my weather radar app. DS's coach and his wife are in a shelter in St Thomas. I'm scared for them and their family.

I feel for those being affected by Irma as once you have gone through such a storm, you never, ever forget it.

With resources already stretch thin due to Harvey, a direct hit on Miami could see over 10 million people affected by a major hurricane in less than a month, something truly unthinkable.

Update: President Trump has approved the Federal disaster declarations for Hurricane Irma for Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In case anyone wants to bookmark or share:

fema.gov/disasters - Should update as disasters are added with details about countries and funding amount approved. You can also search by type of disaster, date, and state/tribal government.

DisasterAssistance.gov - Looks like you can start with searching with your address and then apply for any eligible assistance and check on your status.

Looking at the model generated forecasts for Miami on Sunday morning. Peak sustained winds will hit 140 mph with gusts to 175 mph. That is enough to air out a room.....quickly.

And it's starting here. We have sustained winds at about 65mph at the moment. It will only get worse from now on. It's such an awe-inspiring thing, to see the power of the storm. So scary. But impressive, nonetheless.

Where in Puerto Rico are you located? Trying to find it on the radar map.

Latest forecast track issued by the National Hurricane Center has Irma going into Miami between noon and 2pm. Winds look to be around 150 mph sustained with gusts to 175mph. She will push a storm surge between Miami and Miami Beach that will flood the entire region.

Based on what we have been seeing and how consistent a landfall in southern Florida has been shown in the models the last two days of model runs. I would just get out....now

She mentioned the San Juan metro area in an earlier post (northeast coast but not all the way east). Last I saw from the WAPA news stream Irma was projected to pass under 30 miles away from the city. Fingers crossed. :(

My family's on the northwest tip next to Aguadilla, projected to be about 50 miles away from Irma. AFAIK they'll still get hurricane force winds, it's only the southwest that's downgraded to tropical storm level.

ETA: Put the stream back on and they were saying that it could have been so much worse if Irma hadn't shifted northwest. The live images so far are bad but I wouldn't say disastrous at this point (knock on wood - I know it's still early). I don't doubt other islands were a lot less fortunate.

The center of Irma is due north of Fajardo, moving off to the west-northwest. The outer rainband is moving across the island. The second inner rainband is approaching the northern coast. The third inner band or the eye wall is well offshore and will remain so.

Between noon and 2 on what day? Thursday? Or is it not projected to hit Miami until Sunday?

Lara, I am thinking of you and your family, can you contact them?

Flights out of Miami are outrageous. To go to my hometown, there are exactly two flights left and the cheapest is over $1400 (major city- mind you). Luckily, Fort Lauderdale has some much cheaper options.
