Hurricane Irma

I live two blocks from the MLB airport on the East Coast of FL.
Any idea of the impact, here?
Depends whether Irma runs up the west coast or the east coast. If she runs up the east coast and remains just offshore, the whole east coast of Florida would get very strong winds. Kind of like the storm last year that ran the coast but much, much stronger.

WOW, this is big, really big, really, really big.

In my over-worried mind, I would get out of dodge now. They are going to be bumping and rescheduling things all over the place, starting now, to get as many people as possible out SOON.

I'm really feeling for the folks in the Leeward Islands right now. On some of the islands they can head to higher ground, but most people live near the sea and some of those islands don't have higher ground at all, so the potential destruction of homes, schools etc is massive. And if businesses (notably hotels) are shuttered for extended periods - as has happened many times with far lesser storms - that's their livelihood too. For many, leaving their island now or in future is very difficult option.

I just remodeled my home on the Eastern Shore of Maryland - I have to go back to DC on Sunday. Thinking I will board up the windows even if the models now show it will hit further south. The flood maps were redrawn, so I am not in them anymore, but I kept my flood insurance thank goodness.

I live on Miami Beach and specifically right on the bay connecting the beach and downtown Miami and it takes all of 10 minutes of rain to completely flood everything here- no exaggeration. We just went through it a few weeks ago and it took hours for them to get the roads back to normal just from a little storm. No one seems to be moving with any urgency yet, probably because last year they were 95% sure the hurricane was going to directly hit Miami but then the night before, it moved off the coast and then ended up hitting a lot of other areas in Florida. Also, I'm not sure many people here have places to go as it's a predominantly walking/biking area and most people don't have cars or family nearby.

It'll be interesting to see what happens in the next 3 days, but right now plenty of people are at the beach and/or going about their days like nothing is happening. I went to the grocery store here this morning to stock up on some basic foods and there were no carts available and most of the aisles were already wiped out, so I guess most people just plan on barricading themselves inside and seeing what happens.

At least there is almost no chance of it going into the Gulf and heading for the TX or LA coast.

I'm having major flashbacks to Katrina when the NHC kept telling us she was going to make a turn north and she just kept chugging toward us in LA. Is there any possibility this thing doesn't get picked up by the dip in the jet stream?

@FGRSK8, my son's former coach and his wife are hunkering down in a condo off of the beach in St Thomas. Not sure how far inland.

They couldn't get off the island.

How bad is it for them? I'm pretty worried.

They are in the direct path. If the eye doesn't go over them it will be close.

My mom has a Winter house in Boynton Beach, Florida. She called friends down there to check on them and to make sure her house is secure for Irma. Her friends told her stores are already posting signs that they expect to be closed all weekend.

Latest advisory indicates that Irma will go over portions of the Virgin Islands. Winds of 185 mph with gusts to 200 mph are possible.

Could you please give the latest projections for PR? Is it at least escaping the eye? (Not that it won't be disastrous regardless...)

I hope you have a plan to evacuate!

The eye will have its closet approach to the northeast corner of Puerto Rico, but remain just offshore. Winds in that corner could gust to 150 mph. The rest of the island will see gusts 75-100 mph along with heavy rainfall.

My sister evacuated out of where she lives in FL. Normally, she'd go up to stay at my dad's house in Gainesville, but he's actually up here on Cape Cod right now. So he bought her a bus ticket, and she gets to spend some time on the Cape. After her 44 hour bus ride, that is.

Looks like Irma is trailed by Tropical Storm Jose  :yikes:
Imagine that...Jose. That's 'Ho-say', 45, and it is a Latino name.
Could he be coming after you, 45,? Just think of how many boys and men named Jose you have just tried to expel from your USA. :scream:

One of my nieces lives on the Gulf side of Florida. She and her family are planning to ride it out, come what may.

There's no bottled water to be found anywhere today, from what she says; she found some at a store yesterday and posted it on Facebook, and within 10 minutes some of her friends arrived and cleaned the store out. And someone stole almost all the gas out of her husband's truck overnight.

I'm in the big bend area. Went to fill up my car tonight. One station completely out of gas, the next one had lines, at 9pm at night. Got water yesterday and the shelves were still half full, but I'm hearing that's not the case today.
