Hurricane Irma

An article on the damage done to the Orlando amusement parks mentioned that Orlando Intl Airport is expected to resume operation in a limited capacity on Tuesday.

...But is was a long night, don't want to go thru that again. We will be looking into hurricane shutters.

My dad's shutters allow him to lower the shutters (he uses a hand crank, but I understand you can also buy them so they run on electrics) from *inside* his house. The metal shutters are up there permanently, but they roll up and out of the way when not in use. When you close them, you use the little hand crank thing on the inside of the house, next to each window, and it lowers the shutter down the outside of the window.

He'd told me that a lot of shutters he'd looked at have to be attached (so they aren't on there all the time) or rolled down from the outside of the house, which is why I mention this - being able to lower then from indoors helps if you have shutters on windows that you'd need to use a ladder to reach. Or if it's already raining by the time you lower the shutters. ;)

Sorry if this has been posted already:

A rescue ship sent by Marriott rescued only Marriott guests and not other stranded passengers. This sounds really cruel. There is finger pointing both ways (local hotel management and corporate Marriott). It is not clear if the 35 left on St. Thomas were able to get out somehow. The island was running out of food and water and the airport was closed.

It was the local gov't that wouldn't allow the additional people to board the ship. They required detailed bio info on each guest/passenger so Marriott provided that for its guests (b/c they already had it). The port officials wouldn't let the additional people get on b/c they had no record of them. Seems like the local gov't/port workers were the ones who were cruel.

FTR, we had an actual hurricane here from 2pm Sunday until 4Pm Sunday. It was impressive even if it was Cat 1 winds. Even that can cause considerable damage. I lost part of the fence that surrounds my back yard and an old bottle brush tree and some scrub palms in the front. The fence will take awhile and some $$ to fix. The trees are not considered a loss. We also lost power for 13 hours. That is most unusual. Most people around us, even 3 or 4 houses away, are without power and it is very hot here. Houses without A/C are saunas in short order.

That pretty much describes the damage where I live. Many trees down or shredded. Fences the same. Zero structural damage to homes or buildings. IMO Wilma hit us harder. Schools are closed until Monday. Garbage pick-up started today. Most roads are passable. Some stoplights are working. People are still being civil, but that seems to be slowly fraying at the edges.

Overall, my family and I got punched in the nose and kicked in the butt. That is survivable, if painful and inconvenient. FTR, we did not dodge a bullet, we dodged a cannon ball. We are damned lucky and we know it.

From what I understand, people had to be registered at a hotel to receive hotel-based rescue. Everyone else was on their own. I don't know who was behind that edict.

Our friends took a private small boat from St Thomas to St Croix. Apparently there's a fleet of private boat heros helping out the best they can.

ETA: They landed in Detroit about 15 minutes ago! :cheer2:

There was an F2 tornado confirmed at Crescent Beach, FL, where my dad lives. Lucky for him, it didn't hit his house - it damaged nearby condos. The bridges to his island have reopened, but there are roads closed and etc. People are saying it's taking several hours longer than normal to drive from Georgia to Florida, and that many places along the route don't have gas. There's also no toilet paper at the Gainesville Publix! Oh, the horror! I joke, but there are some shortages of grocery and related items.
