White House - Disaster declarations approved for federal assistance:
North Carolina - Hurricane Florence: Beaufort, Brunswick, Carteret, Craven, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender counties

I expect President Trump to also approve the declarations for South Carolina and Virginia very soon.

I’m very happy that these states’ (VA, NC, SC, and I bet Georgia will probably declare some flooding assistance as well) emergency management agencies have made their quick assessments and requested any federal assistance needed ASAP.
 
CNN is reporting that another infant died from injuries sustained when a tree fell onto the home. :(

CNN also had a woman on the phone who got stranded yesterday as they were driving from Georgia from Virginia. They travelled up I95, then I95 was closed (imagine that) and they took an exit to Lumberton. She said they decided to travel to Virginia because they didn't think it would be that bad. :wall:

We now have a new word for the categorization of animal groups: a boat of beagles. :p

Lucky beagles - time was running out as the waters were rising, but they got rescued in time.

I don't understand what they dogs' owners, who were trapped in the trailers, didn't at least let them out of their cages and at least be with them until the end or give them a chance to swim to safety. :confused:

UPDATE: President Trump has also approved the major disaster declaration for Hurricane Florence for South Carolina - Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester, Georgetown, Horry, Marion, Orangeburg, and Williamsburg counties.

I saw a second video on Twitter last night of another group of dogs being rescued that were drowning in their pens after the owner left them there. Now I don't know that particular owner's story so I'm reluctant to say more but it is perplexing to why you would leave and not just open the pens so they could try to swim away.

Based on my own experience growing up in rural area where hunting with dogs is common, I would say these are hunting dogs. They're not considered pets, and most people wouldn't consider evacuating with them because they're not house broken, if they've ever been inside ever.
 
Several tornado warnings and confirmed touchdowns in and around the Richmond, VA metro area from remnants of Florence passing through. A flooring company warehouse south and west of the city in Chesterfield County was leveled with one confirmed fatality. We have been in our central hallway and stairwells in downtown Richmond most of the afternoon.

A couple of funnels sighted just south and then north of my area to the southwest of the city earlier this afternoon. Not sure what I will be going home through or to.

Even so - dogs are living creatures who feel fear and other emotions just like people do. There are outdoor kennels that board dogs, and SFAIK, most dogs prefer not to to soil their 'den' if they are given a choice. Yes, I understand that dogs are classified as 'property' by law. Animal rights are a relatively new concept, but are gaining importance. For example, I have a client (am an editor) taking animal biology courses focused on improving the welfare of farm animals. I hope that we'll see advancements in animal rights over the next 25 years or so.

I'm also troubled by the possibility of livestock drowning, but the logistics of evacuating livestock are probably impossible.
 
Where is Trump going? Wilmington is cut off, the Cape Fear river is still rising. The pictures that they are showing are horrible; houses almost completely submerged. So, the only place where he can go is where there is no imminent danger and it sounds like those areas would be areas that were not hit by the worst of the storm, so, not the areas where he should go/that accurately reflect the damage the storm did.
 
He'll "view" the damage by plane or helicopter; and say that his administration has done a "wonderful" job of addressing the storm.
 
Pretty much as I expected:
President Trump lauded emergency workers in North Carolina during a visit to the storm-impacted region on Wednesday as he predicted a costly clean up.


"The job you’ve done has been incredible," Trump said inside an airplane hangar in North Carolina. "They’re talking about it all over the world."
"Unfortunately, the money will be a lot but it's going to come," he said later, vowing a robust federal response to the storm.

He told those who lost loved ones the country was in mourning.

"America grieves with you and our hearts break for you. God bless you. We will never forget your loss," Trump said. "To all those impacted by this terrible storm, our entire American family is with you and ready to help. You will recover."

Trump’s storm “briefing” in N.C. was surreal. First, nobody briefed him; politicians mostly just thanked him. Second, he praised local officials for their “talent.” Third, he said we have the strongest economy ever. Fourth, he asked about Lake Norman, where his golf course is.

That's a tweet from a reporter for The Tennessian. I guess, he's usually watching Fox News and hasn't had much interaction with Trump before? Welcome to the reality we all have lived in for almost two years. :saint:
 
He told someone to 'have a good time' as he handed him a MRE that he had waited in line for an hour to get. Really? Have a good time?????
