Yes. I'm very relieved because had the coach actually spotted her (ie touched her) it would have been a zero. That's why I was hoping she'd do that as her second vault. It will be interesting to see what she does in the other three phases of the competition.
 
As for the beam question, I think they’re going to see how the athletes look during practice and choose from there. We know potential scoring is something to consider but also probability of hitting too. There are a lot of data points that show when Team USA chooses who can score higher if they hit but have shown serious nerves and mistakes in qualifications for a 3-3 final, it has disastrous results. I actually think they’ve been more likely to go with the one who seems solid even if their high score isn’t as high as the one who is less solid.

At the risk of stating the obvious, when one has the sheer difficulty and the execution of Biles, then one can afford that deduction.
 
It’s amazing how bars has come a long way since it became a high bar-heavy apparatus in the late 80s. Compared to then, there’s so many amazing transitions from high to low and back. I do wish there was much more interplay between the bars, but it’s better in that aspect than it has been since the time the bars started being positioned more further apart. And the pirouettes and handstand positions are much more on point thanks to the exact judging and rules requiring hit positions.

The form and execution expected on all moves on every apparatus has greatly raised all of our expectations. It’s like the giant technology leap we had since the late 1999s-late 2000s.
 
I guess for the top teams, the Double Yurchenko/Baitova is what the single Yurchenko was from 1987-1992?
 
I followed the US ladies subdivision via social media earlier because I was out at the time but I'm now trying to catch up on actual routines and those ladies looked pretty darn solid overall (feel bad for Skye on the beam). It will be interesting to see who they pick for the team finals. Excited that Simone landed her awesome vault and officially got it named after her! :cheer:
 
Belgium not having a good time in qualifying at all :sad: but look at the floor exercise of Erika Pinxton - one of the few really well choreographed floor exercises!
 
Sabrina Voinea from Romania did not jump her jump. 0 points. Was that on purpose?
She was delightful on floor so I thought she might have a chance at the AA?#

ETA - according to the start list she even wanted to do two vaults- very strange

wonderful bars routine from Nemour - into second in the qualifying with the highest difficulty score. She once did not hit a handstand on the lower bar from what I saw (not in technique anymore with gymnastics) so might threaten for gold if she cleans this up.

I know I am talking here to myself but I refuse to let twitter win - FSU is the best place for pbp and this stands ;-)

So I am trying to figure out which countries will still make the top 12 - my guess would be Japan, Brazil, Australia, China and Canada - so Belgium definitely out.

ah, that was nonsense of course - she did not compete bars when I wrote this and she is not in bars finals.
 
Barbosa repeated a set of skills on the lower bars when she seemingly good not connect the next skill. This is not a mistake per se - I wonder how that will score? Is there a penalty for repeating sth like this when there is no obvious break or mistake?

I don’t know the rule on that- when gymnasts fall, they sometimes get back up and repeat the skill they fell on. But I don’t know how the scoring works on any of this.

Canada qualified last year as the bronze medalists - which was good because this year they're going to miss the final.

I'm not sure - injury is probably the most likely reason - any reason to believe they would be sending a stronger team to the Pan Am Games in 3 weeks, and are giving other athletes a chance to compete at Worlds where the results won't affect anything - I think injury is the best explanation.
 
Disaster for Canada, I almost wish I hadn't watched the WAG qualies live as it was hard to watch. Should have watched the Canadian MAG team and their historic performance but it was too early. Black was solid overall, some mistakes that she can look to improve on the the AA Final, but she is truly the rock for this team. The rest of the team along with the younger, less experienced team members struggled unfortunately. I think I am still scarred from Canada sending out Ava Stewart to the 2020 Olympics and her buckling under the pressure. This feels like that all over again. I believe Pedrick is injured, not sure of the others. Hoping Olsen comes back as we could use her strong VT and chance at VT finals, she just isn't as useable on other events.
