Maybe this will be an educational moment for skating and the safety measures will be tightened now.

Better late than never, I suppose. Coaching teams will be feeling the real hurt of their athletes being off ice prior to the nationals.

I'm just not happy about this season being so externally affected by illness. If Nationals goes ahead it will probably just be about rolling the dice of who didn't get c19 and suffer bad symptoms.
I just think the way the comps have played out and the virus the entire year should be a BYE year. Wonder what Uuncle Dick would advise.

The problem is that some competitions decide on funding for the next year. No country is so rich that they would want to pay the same skaters as last year, plus additionally to those who do well this year. So if someone gets the benefit of doubt, someone else looses out.

Laishev, director of Sambo-70, heard some rumors that Eteri has a cold and taking time off and repeated it to the press.
Eteri, Gleikh and Dudakov sent him a message that everyone is healthy and at work.

.... according to the web-followers, 58 minutes after Tutberidze team posted the above video, Plushenko came up with this... :)
Their war is so ridiculous, but I love it

Well, whatever happens, IMO, is going to be unfair to someone. If I were in charge, which I am not, I would bite the bullet, and use the rankings from last year. I assert that very few, if any, of this year's comps have been free of "issues"......people not being able to get from A-B, skaters not being able to practice, Coaches not available. I think it would be totally unfair to all concerned to count any rankings/results from this year.

I don’t know if you follow Russian juniors, but according to your suggestion, you would leave without funding the following junior pairs :

Kostiukovich/Briukhanov, because neither Kostiukovich/Ialin nor Vislobokova/Briukhanov earned funding at the last nationals. This season Kostiukovich/Briukhanov won two Russian cups and is on top of the junior qualifying table!

Safina/Bakhmat - even though they are (after four events) the third top qualifying pair, would be also left out of team and out of funding.

Kargulina/Kalashnikov also look very good, they have second place in their first event and skate again in this coming event. They would be without funding because last season they didn’t skate together yet.

In junior girls, some were not eligible to skate at junior nationals yet (e.g. Zhilina), so she would have no chance to get on team for next season and no funding. There is also Elizaveta Osokina, who was the best at the test skates, but last season wasn’t very good yet, she would be also without funding.

In senior ice dance, Khubardieva/Bazin are currently 4-6 top Russian dance couple (togethr with Morozov/Bagin and Skoptsova/Alioshin). They would be also left without funding, only because last season they didn’t skate together.

Skaters’ results can change from year to year. For example, Tuktamysheva went from first place at the nationals one year to tenth place the following year, then the year after she was second at the nationals and the year after eight. That means that within four years she was twice at the top, and twice was left off the team with no funding. At the moment the results from one season decide on funding for the following season (a year later). Making the decision that funding for season 2021-22 would be based on the season 2019-20 is just wrong.

I do understand. This season is bogus. No matter what happens there will be people who get the short end.

I don't understand how the funding is doled out. If a skater cannot do an event do they get or keep their funding? And if they send a replacement does that skater get funding? I assume that judges, venues, workers don't get paid if there is no event. So unless people are getting paid for NOT working there should be some left over $$$$

Yes, I think the nationals will decide. And their internal ranking may be different than their ranking in international competitions...
Yes, I would think nationals will probably decide funding. Though I don't know that it will tell us much in the long run as you do have to see how competitive athletes are outside of the country. Also Shevchenko & Eremenko have had a very truncated season at this point so if they finish behind the other teams, I'm not sure how representative that might be of where they are in the larger scheme of things. One basically assumes the top two dance teams' ranking is safe regardless of whether they make it to Nationals. However, various other teams still have to stay healthy & out of quarantine if we are going to get a solid ranking of the top 7 at all. (Morozov senior was at the birthday party:yikes:).

This whole thing is disappointing.

Kostornaya was working to restore the triple axel, but now will be off ice.

Tuktamysheva was working to include the quad toe at nationals, but will now lose training time.

Medvedeva has been wiped out with injury and illness.

Maybe in a twist of fate, it was fortunate that Trusova didn't medal, because it seems the whole ladies podium got c19.

Just making a very rare post in this thread :)

When I first watched CoR on playback from the DVR I was like oh wow,.. they have an audience? And was thinking I guess things must be much better there than in USA. Then when I saw them in Kiss & Cry with no masks and the coaches with no masks...I was kinda like... wow.... what a stark contrast from SkAm. Then watching more programs I saw Moskvina and Mishen among manyyy others wearing the chin diaper and not as a mask.. And Im like... why the heck bother guys???? If adults do that what can we expect from kids as they are supposed to set an example.

And I thought did ISU not set a protcol across the entire GP wear masks in K&C and perhaps no coaches? Weird to see that ISU set no practices and standards.

Anywhooooo than I watch NHK..and Im like an audience??? Wow, I guess we are wayyyyy bad in USA.

Has NHK had any outbreaks since?

Nationals never show the prognosis for the long term. Last year Morozov/Bagin were Russian number four at the nationals, and yet this season they have been beaten several times by Khubardieva and Bagin and once by Skopcova/Alioshin. I think every time when there is several pairs of a very similar standard, the outcomes of their sparing will be changing from a competition to a competition. Only when either of them becomes significantly better, the judges will start seeing them differently.

These Russian cups are qualifying competitions for the nationals. Something like your sectionals and regionals. What happens in your country if a skater misses their regionals or sectionals? As far as I know, he/she probably wouldn’t be able to qualify for the nationals, right? In Russia, you have five Russian cup events and need to attend two, so it is more forgiving (if you are ill, just attend the next one, as long as you didn’t leave it too late).

Russian nationals usually have set number of places - ladies and men 18 each, pairs 12 and ice dance 10 or 15 (it changes).

The standings from the nationals from one season decides on who will be on the national team for the next season (usually the top six) and therefore the funding. So in ‘a normal season’, the nationals in December 2020 would decide who will be funded between July 2021-June 2022. That’s why if they use the last season’s ranking, the results from the nationals in December 2019 would be deciding on funding skaters between July 2021-June 2022. That’s a long time; skaters results change in this timescale.

"How to understand the elements and judging in figure skating when watching it on TV"

This is a loose translation of a 20 minute TV special of Russian Channel #1, featuring Alina Zagitova and Alexei Yagudin. Alina explains the elements, footwork, jumps, spins and how they are judged. Some demonstrations. Alexei talks about "how it was in his days", Alina makes fun of him, explains how it is how. It is in Russian, but visually self-explanatory for those who know all this.

Oh, come on. There is a war between those two camps, but it is sort of enjoyable...:watch::watch::watch::watch::watch:
TeamTutberidze is not at war with anyone, her post was addressed to Liasachev, and she said his name. Pluschenko apparently felt guilty that Kostornaya has XYZ and immediately posted his video to show "all is safe at his rink".

No war this time, sorry folks........ :p

Team Tutberidze may not have fired at Pluschenko on this occasion, but claiming that she is not at war is overly optimistic. Just waiting for the right occasion, when there is even the tiniest reason why she could get ‘offended’ and pull out her claws.

Fun trivia from the 5th Russian Cup event, Ladies singles.
The event will have two girls, identical twins, Ksenyia and Dariya Oklandkovy.

I am just wondering if they can skate in each other's place if ever needed in the future..... :-)

I am way out of my field of knowledge here...but I think you go to regionals and sectionals if you did not qualify through the Grand Prix (comps that have the best skaters from the various countries skating in front of an international judging panel)

So IMO the rankings this year is useless. You have too skaters that could only do one comp. How would you weight them so it is equitable?

From what I understand, **** is under control in Asia. Both China and Japan are hosting events with spectators.

As for all the Russians catching *****, seems like it is going around and they are recovering. Eteri and other coaches caught it as well and seems like they recovered. Mishin is still running around coaching with his mask below his nose and he's still alive. Here there is so much hysterics about it but most people recover. I also think the biggest risk to the Russian athletes, as well as others, is the effect that the shutdown had on training time and puberty. It's actually interesting to see the Russian girls grappling with and dealing with puberty, and they seem to be handling it successfully. It also throws a wrench in some of the gossip that they are taking drugs to stay small, it's clear that they are not.

My son's hockey coach (young and super-fit) caught C19 and was really sick. He said 3 days were terrible, a bad flu + stomach bug bundle. He got better quickly but had persistent loss of smell and taste. Here's the weird part. None of the kids or parent caught it. The coach got sick 4 days prior to a tournament and we all got tested. The schools are also open since September. There have been 2 confirmed cases in my son's middle school; they traced / quarantined kids in immediate contact. Nothing happened.

I honestly don't know what to think. We are in Tampa. The city is completely open since June. I know two people who had C19. My friends in NYC are reporting a very different landscape, with a lot of people (young and old) getting sick from the bug. I prefer to err on the side of caution. But looking forward to learning one day about what is really happening during this pandemic.

Are you ****ing kidding me with this?
This is now the leading cause of death in the US. We had 2,637 new deaths from this yesterday and are hitting numbers close to that daily. Just because some people get it and it's just like a bad cold or stomach bug for them and some people are asymptomatic doesn't mean it's not a frigging deadly plague raging out of control right now since so many people think we are all having an overreaction to the deaths we are surrounded by daily. Yes, "most" people recover. Many of those people become deathly ill and it's not just a cold or stomach bug for them. Many of those people have long term health issues from it (I got it in early April and I am still not fully back to normal). Many of us have lost friends, family, and community members to this. Hospitals are becoming completely overwhelmed. I will never understand the mentality of people who, just because it hasn't directly affected them or their communities (yet) in a way that slaps them hard with the reality of what this means for 240,000 and counting grieving families they are dismissive of the reality of how bad things really are and will be.

I don't know, maybe read a legitimate newspaper to find out?
Are there any left?

Well done to Kamila today. remember she's supposed to be in juniors and has a lot of pressure on her. It's not a strong field because of C19 so she should cruise the victory.
