From Russia with Love [#35]: Winter 2019

How do you know it's a boy?
Russian media.
Also, there was a hashtag #son under this post but it looks like she deleted it.

From Brian Orser’s interview:
Shae-Lynn Bourne will choreograph Evgenia’s LP (to Alegria ) and Jeffrey Buttle will do her SP for 2020/21 season

Apparently, Ilinykh and Polunin named their son "Mir", which means "World" or "Peace" in Russian.

ETA: I read another article that says they have a daughter, Ksenia.

Man, Polunin really knows how to confuse people.

EDIT: Confirmed through Galina Polunina, the child is named Mir or some version and is a boy.

 Even though Russia only has one medal in junior ice dance, all but one skater of the 6 medalists are Russian. The Russian fed needs to ponder this.
I mean all american men in junior worlds are sons of 90’s refugees from Russia really! Point being there’s no way to keep some people so might as well let them go! And I don’t know if there are any jewish people here but if there are russia faces crippling economic sanctions if it didn’t let its jewish people leave!

On a lighter note. I'm recovering from surgery and sort of confined to a chair. so I have all this great time to do random TV stuff.

I was watching an episode of Strong Medicine..(A really old show about two women doctors running a woman's clinic.). Story line involved a figure skater. I am watching the skater and thinking she was soooooo not a skater and couldn't they have found somebody better? The skater was actually Oksana Baiul ! She was totally clunky. now I know I was not expecting her to do anything fabulous or land any triples but I mean really she could barely get across the ice.

Then I was watching a movie called Soul Sisters. Also very old movie. Elvis stojko was the owner of ice skating rink. And he went out and skated like a skater. He had moves and carriage it was really amazing watching those two things so close together. And either of the teenage skaters in the movie could have out skated Oksana baiul in her part.
I just so you know I have absolutely no agenda about Oksana or her life or her choices or anything else it was just really weird.

The movies kind of good by the way also Tessa Virtue's in it.

Why does the very insightful interview actually not generate a response - is it because of Mrs. Mozer's excellent analysis of stupid, unimaginative and boring qualification procedures, which favours only a few countries in the world and finally convinces the rest that investing in figure skating is no longer worthwhile?

Or does this ambivalence in one and the same person who argues about uncomfortable truths (the lady speaks of "black period") as if she were blind in one eye? Apart from the fact that her diplomatic efforts in this question (she simply has no answer to it) are not very impressive.

We have a girl around Korovin, we have a girl around Briukhanov, where I am not sure if it's Vislobokova,... I live in happy delusion :drama: :D

Someone help? :P

TAT started to receive presents for March, 8th three days ago :)

Today she started with congratulating other women (many Russian women do so on March, 8th)

Later she congratulated Mishin who was born on March, 8th

t.a.tarasova: Dear Alyosha! Alexei Nikolayevich! Congratulations! I wish you health! Interest in your profession! Inventiveness! I wish your students charm and victories! Tanyukha, I wish you health and patience! I'm happy, that we live and work contemporaneously. I wish you sping mood. Yours TAT
(I guess she means his wife, when she says "Tanyukha")

I think there's a lot of interesting stuff in the Mozer interview, but my own huuuuugely subjective opinion is that it makes more sense to talk about it after Worlds.

Also happy birthday Mishin!

I am so used to seeing Kamila Valieva skate lights out...but this time she skated (especially in the long) carefully, like she had something to lose. It affected her speed and I think she lost a little flow, in and out of her jumps...but her jumps still had the great spring and lift that I really admire. Even slowed down as she was here, Kamila was skating 10x faster than Alysa Liu was.

I missed her usual speed and attack but Kamila is always very musically aware and sensitive and knows how to sell a program. I love watching her skate.

Went to Liza Tuktamysheva’s show in St Petersburg today. Nothing extra-ordinary but it was nice to see Mikhail Kolyada on the ice again. He still has the best skating skills and gliding in Russian team

And in general all the boys looked good - Makar Ignatov, Samarin, Aliev, Kolyada and even Gumennik and Mozalev, who came to the arena straight from the airport. It’s nice to finally have some depth in men’s skating as well :)

In the summer, the ISU Congress will be held. They want to raise the age of athletes who can take part in senior competitions to 17 years. Is it a right decision?

– When Tara Lipinski, Sarah Hughes won at the age of 15-16 and represented the USA, no one had any questions. Now the question has arose and we began to say that this is against Russia. We see some kind of conspiracy everywhere. But no one came up with the simple idea that people come to see the competitions of the strongest skaters in the world, and see children skate. Still, I want some kind of harmony. Our sport is called “figure skating”. But I can say that in the current season you can see a big progress of our girls precisely in terms of figure skating. It has now become interesting to look at them.

So, you support this idea.

– Now I will say “yes”, and in a year I’ll think: “Why did I say that?” I have no answer to this question. There are children who at the age of 14 look like mature people. But it also happens the other way.

Here we go again. No offense to Nina, seriously, great interview, but the broken record age debate (just for old times’ sake) is back.

I think the debate is an important one to continue having. It’s well exhausted by now until we hit an acceptable age for ladies (and are the men, pairs, ice dancers going to be swept up into the raging age debate, too?) If it is a fair process, the answer is yes.

I must respectfully disagree w/ Nina, as PLENTY of the fans questioned and had an issue w/ Tara and Sarah winning the biggest and most coveted prize in figure skating. In large part, or you could say, entirely because of who they defeated to win their Olympic gold medals. That’s strictly a fan’s angst, though because remember that Shizuka was 24 and some fans were still pissed off mainly due to the fact that despite completing a clean routine it ONLY included five triple jumps. So, which is it? A technically packed program or one that was more than good enough for Shizuka to win gold? I vote for both because each Olympic winning (ladies) program has been unique to the competitive situation and circumstances of the moment.

On the flip side, PLENTY of those same fans were actually pretty happy about Tara and Sarah winning gold medals because they felt these two ladies had the best skates overall and did not look at their age in a negative, unacceptable way.

IMO, age is conveniently used as the excuse for an undesirable outcome primarily when that outcome is unsatisfactory to the masses, i.e., the fans. Favorites falter and someone else takes advantage of that fact which equals -- get ready for it -- competition.

I understand that people want a sport where more mature individuals are winning the top titles but be aware that if they keep raising the age limit, the sport will eventually take on an entirely different look and feel. I am not saying that is a bad thing, but the “older” the body gets, the harder it is to do some of the more technically difficult jumps. As someone who has a deep appreciation for artistry, I can certainly live with it. Still, I would hate to see the technicians who, tbh, are usually the more youthful skaters penalized because they benefit from that youth and their ability to crank out three, four, or more technically challenging and difficult revolutions.

Eventually, someone will get the short end of the stick. It’s a no-win situation.

When the age minimum was raised that time, it wasn't because Russian Ladies were sweeping the podia, nor was it because of who was beating Kwan, and in both cases, they were grandfathered in based on their prior results -- Cohen missed her chance for this -- and I would imagine that, were the ISU to raise the minimum age again, they would grandfather in younger Ladies based on their prior results.

If they were going to do it, this would be the year, and it would come into affect for the post Olympic season with all current age-eligible junior skaters being given waivers.

I doubt it. The last time they did it, it took specific results to be grandfathered: they did not grandfather in the entire field. Cohen didn't qualify for it by being 6th at 2000 Junior Worlds, which is why the 2002 Olympics was her first senior championship. Sarah Hughes was the 1999 Jr. Worlds silver medallist.

Nina's interview had me thinking more about who had defeated Irina.

The podium had been upset as Sarah pulled the unthinkable in the minds of many. Irina's people weren't happy about it and even pushed back, initially. Had Sarah been unable to compete at those Olympic Games because of an age limit, voilà, problem solved. Irina would have gone on to win or maybe someone else, which I think was the point swirling around the age debate, then and now.

I agree with you that the younger ladies should be grandfathered in; otherwise, they've opened yet another Pandora's Box. My thoughts are that eventually someone who has incredible, undeniable talent (Mao, for example) will be denied competing, courtesy of newly minted age limits and rules and we will be back to square one.

Regardless, as to when or if they raise the age limit, how and when it is implemented, and who will be grandfathered in, someone will be affected, e.g., coaches, skaters, fans. They can't please all.

If they were going to do it, this would be the year, and it would come into affect for the post Olympic season with all current age-eligible junior skaters being given waivers.
Yeah, and if they're going to raise the age limit to 17, they should stop talking about it and do it already... There’s bound to be some fallout - at some point. That's my (unscientific) opinion. :COP:

Age limit change is the silliest idea. So absurd. I'm in awe of people who talk about it as if it weren't entirely jealousy-driven. Besides, Eteri's 17 year olds dominate too. 18 and 19 year olds, sometimes. While we haven't much evidence beyond that, the podium places are locked down anyway, for years to come.

It is, and therefore they should leave it alone, but too many fans are uncomfortable with one thing or another which is also ridiculous because we're talking about a sport. Too many people get hung up on things that take away from the sport and place it into the weeds. Focus, on the sport, and let those who have been gifted to skate competitively skate. If they're 15 and can win it all, great. If they're 24 and can win it all, great.

Eteri's 17 year olds dominate too.
Exactly.
