Why have all the Russian men (at least those in Singles and Pairs) looked so depressed these past few days?

Generally people from easter and Central Europe don’t keep smiling without a reason. When I moved to the UK, I thought everyone looked so fake cheerful. Now when I go back home, I think everyone looks so miserable. Looking so cheerful in Eastern Europe may make other think that you are simple minded.

Crikey.

As a Brit this interests me - as I think us Brits look like a right miserable bunch.
Miserable bunch? If you meet a stranger and make an eye contact, usually you smile. We don’t. It may orininate from times of communism, when you didn’t know who is the secret police and who will grass you up to the authorities for something you may not have done.
If you meet a friend, or if you answer the phone, you put on a ‘very happy’ voice. No matter what mood you are, will be very happy to meet the peson (even if you are not quite as much happy). We are obviously happy if we meet a friend, but not happy enough to make you sounds overly cheerful when you have a bad mood because perhaps something bad happened. When I am asnwering phone, I usually use my normal voice, not the ‘singing’ voice. (My husband always started the call with checking if I am alright because I sound sad.) I think there are many little things you won’t notice, and you may not agree with even when you read it, unless someone from different culture points it out the moment it happens. It is so ingrained in you that you may not register it. May husband never knew what I was talking about when I mentioned the singing voice of English females until I started pointing out every time it happened.

Oh, noooo! This wasn't true in my country! The Hungarians were the most happiest in that era. No one cared about the secret police in 70's 80's! Many times we criticised openly the leaders. There were humorists who criticised the state, the communist leaders openly in the TV, radio. We call it political cabaret. There was secret police but we didn't feel it. Mostly of the Hungarians thought we are living in a good country with good leaders. But after the regime has changed and many people started to forget everything and started to say how bad era that was. They said they fought against the communist regime..they were fighters.:D But, no, they werent you believe me...

If someone asked me whether we are non-smiling people while I was living back home, I would disagree too. You can’t see the difference until you come from a longer stay abroad. But even Hungarians are ‘miserable looking’. I noticed it when I visited Europeans a few years back.

It is possible that communism were experienced differently in every communist country. It also would be different at different times, e.g.early 70s, late seventies and early 80s, late 80s... you are portraying communism as a one big party. Great fun, isn’t it! I don’t know how it was in Hungary, but in my country people just disappeared and were never seen again. People who spoke agaist the regime could not find any work, and as it was a criminal offence to be unemployed, they we forced to take a job in some coal mining despite having university education. Speaking against the regime was also dangerous if you wanted your children to go to university. One phone call could ensure that no university would accept them! Everything was centralised, so only one call... The only holiday abroad my family was allowed was to Romania and East Germany. My father was in army, so they considered it a risk to allow us to see most countries.

The humorists you write about - well, in my country they would do it once and then they would not have a job on TV. Many writers could not write because no one would publish them. Singers suddenly could not sing because TV was a state organisation. Only after revolution all those artists came back. For many of them it was too late, e.g. singers did not have the voice any more. But maybe in Hungary it was different. Or maybe you see it differently because it didn’t affect you?

No, in Hungary it was different. Even the historians used to say we were "the happiest barrack", we had the "gulash communism". We had everything there was no shortage in the shops.
If you could understand the Hungarian I could show old videos about the humorists. As I said that was an entertaining new genre, the "political cabaret". Maybe our communists were smart. Don't get me wrong that wasn't good but much better as the other communist countries. And I talking about the 70's and especially the 80's.

I know. I hate it too. It took me ages to learn it. I am not using it in day-to-day life. Only when I am making fun of it. It is also used when meeting friends/acquaintances. At first I thought that you must have a very, very close relationship with those people if you are soooo happy to see them, and only later I realised that it is just a thing people do without thinking. Like asking ‘how are you’ when you don’t really want to hear the truthful asnwer.

That /\ /\ ! My take on Hungary is, first of all, friendliness and communication varies from large cities to small towns/rural areas, but Hungarians are more open to communication.

Over all, people on the streets go about their business, normal faces and the shortages like in USSR and other places did not happen.

But in general they are more geared towards contact and communicating, and rather have fun with it, than "try to avoid it"..

Even militzia and shop girls were nicer than in other soviet places...

Yes, I saw her now. We are a little country. She was in prison some years ago. But I believe our talk is off topic , the other posters are angry on us.

Watching Euros today, Zagitova and Medvedeva are such amazing competitors and technical skaters, but they don't finish their moves and have at best superficial connections to music. It made me think: why is it that Russian single ladies' skaters don't have the great carriage and skating skills that have historically characterized the Russian female pairs skaters?

I may have to root for S/B just to see more of his :D reactions.
You don't need to wait for competition, just walk by and say something, and you'll get it .. :D

Thank you for your interest. :)
Finally:
If anyone doesn't understand:
Magyar=Hungarian in our language ->Hungary=Magyarország https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YepRFe65uno she is singing bout it..

and we were these people when we arrived in Europe from Asia cca 1100 years ago and became Christians. But before it the whole Europe feared of us and prayed with these words: "Sagittis Hungarorum Libera nos, Domine "- "From arrows of Hungarians saves us, Lord!"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9n5MZmpJ2g
That was a big fighting but our first state founder king I. István ( Stephen) knew we can stay in Europe with Cristianity.

Today: beautiful country with disgusting leaders. The connect with this thread with Russia we are the biggest supporters of Putin and his policy in Eu. Unfortunately.
