Coming back to this thread because I just watched Orihara/Pirinen in the free dance (I missed it live). That is one of the best-choreographed programs I have seen in a very long time. Not only was it brilliantly constructed, but it was built for their strengths - they looked very comfortable with it and performed it beautifully.

  • Alysa's cartwheel to make her entrance for the SP
  • Alysa's SP - one of the masterpieces of the season
  • Katia's FS - I hate "Cats" programs generally, but she rocked those cat ears and costume change for all its worth & the audience ate it up
  • Kaori's FS - I saw glimpses back during the GP of what this program could be if she ever went clean to a full house and it was wonderful to see that fully realized
  • Alysa's FS - what more can be said about it - THE moment of Worlds because it was so unexpected, so delightful & joyous
  • VouBou and VaanCler having the SPs of their lives and giving us a glimpse of their potential
  • ConMac & MiuKih also delivering BANGER SPs
  • EfiMit's FS - not a dry eye in the room - these two really are almost entirely different skaters than they were with their previous partners - whatever happens with her citizenship in the next 10 months, selfishly, I want them to stick around for 2030
  • the depth in the Ice Dance field - there were some really great teams that didn't make it out of the RD and it's a crying shame we didn't get to see some of their wonderful FDs (ReiMaj, YoMori and ZehnSieb deserved to see the light of day yesterday afternoon)
  • BekHern and the Mrazkovi RD - I'm not usually a fan of Beatles programs, but they really worked as RDs (and both Phebe & Katerina's dresses are da BOMB - fight me)
  • the penultimate group in the RD - what a wild 25 minutes that was
  • SmaDie and CarPon giving us their very best FD performances of the season
  • Ilia & Yuma with those phenomenal SPs
  • Ilia's swagger entrance for the Men's FS
  • most of the men actually not being that bad in the SP or the FS - there wasn't a lot of men menning - maybe they're ashamed of the t-shirts & decided to prove they can have some level of consistency across two programs in one competition

Getting educated by the Netherlands ice dance team on why Piper and Paul’s closeness and control sometimes gets ignored and why the Taschlers and Mrazkovi are scored they way they are.
I am very curious: what did they say about the two Czech teams?

It came down to not getting sufficiently rewarded for power and ice coverage because of a weakness in closeness and control. van Geffen specifically pointed out that all of the top teams have the ability to shift from speed to nuance while staying very close together. One of the more interesting things he said was that there are only a few teams where both partners, equally, can execute the most difficult turns while close together at full speed. He specifically mentioned GilPoi, LaLa, LopBri, and GreenP.

When this happened my husband just went "What in the WWE is going on?"

The Runthrough podcast did a live show at Banners Saturday morning. I was passing by TD Garden around 8:30AM and there was a massive line down the block of people queuing (I assume it was general admission seating, so people got there early). Myself and this other local bystander in a wheelchair were trying to squeeze past on the sidewalk and as the line kept going the further we progressed down the street he just grew more incredulous asking "What is going on??? I'm so confused!!!" Sounds like it wasn't a normal occurrence for that neighborhood and time.

He shrugged… it’s a judged sport and “the judges like what they like.” In his eyes, going strictly by the rule book, GilPoi are the best followed by GuiFab.
gil/poi at speed? when? this is an honest question, bc i can't recall.

(although, i admit that i stopped watching most of their programs some time ago. i'm usually not bothered by dancer's "o" faces but gilles' just started to grate my nerves really hard at some point so i just started skipping past them and haven't really started back up)

My husband agrees with you. I don’t notice it much anymore but she really irritated him.

I can’t go back and ask him until Euros, but he did explain a bit about speed generated via pushes/crossovers and that generated via knee bend and angle of attack. Again, when asked to pick his ideal, he said their names.

I have now watched it about half a dozen times since. Just fabulous. And will continue to do so along with Smart/Dieck. It has been a while since I have found two programs so rewatchable.

I want to also added I watched bits of the gala and found some of the programs the most entertaining I have seen in a long time. Particularly Mikhail's Kung Fu Panda. The juvenile in me appreciated the fart joke.

One thing that I can't un-hear: when Jean Luc Baker was doing commentary for one of the practices for Peacock, after watching Mrazkova/Mrazek he said that they generate great speed off the push of their blades, but he would like to see them glide and maintain the speed.

- Alysa Liu bringing down the house. Did.not.see.that.coming. She skated like she was dancing in her living room without a care in the world, and...what the hell?

Alysa's FS - what more can be said about it - THE moment of Worlds because it was so unexpected, so delightful & joyous
Alysa's skating was definitely one of my highlights too. She radiated such happiness & joy from beginning to end that was just so uplifting - something I sorely needed with the current state of the world. It brought back my memories of Elizabeth Manley's winning free program and reaction at the 1988 Olympics in Calgary.

Another highlight was Piper & Paul's full-out performances while avoiding any accidents with the boards (aka barrier) on the smaller ice surface :biggrinbo.

Got to add the high level of competition as another highlight. (It's sad that so many good skaters were unable to skate their free programs but generally speaking that's a good problem for figure skating to have.)

Highlights

Alysa - cartwheel her way onto the ice for the short program and no nerves ever displayed. Her Awesome short program and free skate.

Isabeau had more speed in her programs, and her short program is also awesome.

The US women finished top five

The new digital rink boards and kiss and cry. I prefer the kiss and cry with the pictures and the announcements probably more than the boards because I think the boards distract from the skater

Lowlights

The Finnish ice dance team falling down in the rhythm dance

Every Worlds there is always a surprise that someone doesn’t make it to the free program this year it was Gubanova and the Lithuanian ice dancers.

Yuma being held up….I would’ve had him in fourth, probably fifth in final standings.

And the German pairs team not winning the title, just because they r not quite as fast as the Japanese in the short program doesn’t mean their technical and skating skills is any less than theirs.
