Having grown tired of two same samey holiday meals a month apart, our new tradition is that for Christmas Eve we choose a different cuisine every year. Last year was Italian, and our main dish was lasagna.

This year is French dishes. Do you have any suggestions?

Honestly, just some good cheese / assiette de fromage. Tarte au maroilles and similar cheese tarte dishes are tasty and more uniquely French to me.

Steak tartare with frites
This is typically called steak/filet americain in Belgium. The number of times on business travel in Brussels I've had to warn a fellow American it's not what they think it is...

A FrenchCanadian neighbour told us of a croissant bakery in St. Boniface (the french area in our city). They are simply out of this world. So much better than anything else that I have ever had that was called a croissant - more like what I had in Paris when there with our daughter. Their soup is also divine.

For a French-themed Christmas Eve, you could start with something elegant but not too heavy, like French onion soup or escargots with garlic butter. For the main course, beef bourguignon or coq au vin feel festive and can be prepared ahead, which is always a bonus. If you prefer seafood, sole meunière or salmon en croûte work beautifully. Finish with crème brûlée, tarte Tatin, or a classic bûche de Noël to complete the experience.

Soupe de l'ognion aka classic onion soup is one of my favorites. Cheap and easy, you just need to take time with it.
I am going to do that tomorrow for dinner. I just need it in to cheer the darkness here. I take a lot of time with the onions, then add enough butter, white wine, a small spoonful of cognac and fresh thyme.
