Fall 2024-Summer 2025 New/Returning/Streaming/TV Shows

Early indications are that season 7 of Drive to Survive (Netflix) will be released on March 7, which is the week before the first Grand Prix of 2025.

I hope these are wrong; that is very, very late to be doing it. I don't want to be rushing to watch it while packing for Melbourne.

Tonic for dreary winter days: Some sizzle from the third season of "The White Lotus":

It's particularly bad for movies. They mix the sound so it sounds great in the theaters at the highest def / best sound system (IMAX?? I can't remember). Then they take that master and mix it down for each type of sound system/screen system and then down for streaming. Streaming is at the bottom.
As someone with some experience in these issues, that's a good explanation. Dolby Surround is great for movies aired in cinemas. And will generally be okay for the small perecentage of people who have a Dolby audio setup at home. It's not so great for people watching on a typical stereo only setup on a TV and worse for a tablet.

This is particularly true for movies with a high dynamic range. So for action movies, to take one example, the audio on an explosion with generally peak too high but the only way to easily lower that for TV (including streaming) without messing with all 8-12 audio tracks is to bring the sound down as a whole (needs editors trained in audio mixing and nobody has the staff resources or budget for that) but then the dialogue will be quieter than is ideal (and doesn't help the perception of mumbling).

A lot more shows for TV and streaming are now being made with Surround audio (so very much not the cheaper option) and while they should be better than a feature film being shoehorned into a TV broadcast or streaming service as they're 'made for TV'', the issue of balancing the audio mix between stereo and surround still exists.

I just finished watching the second season finale of Shrinking. Oh my God, what a fantastic show with amazing performances. The finale had wonderful work by Harrison Ford, Jason Segal, and Brett Goldstein. Amazing. They all deserve an Emmy for their work on this show.

Finally catching up on Outlander. How do they manage to make the theme song worse and worse each season, when the original was perfect?

I was looking for a series to watch on either Peacock or Amazon Prime and landed on The Day of the Jackal, Season 1, on Peacock. Wow! I pretty much binge watched the ten episodes over two days. I think I read Season 2 has already been approved. I can see why. It was completely enthralling, and I certainly want to see more.

Agreed. Day of the Jackal was excellent. I watched the first 3 back to back then had to wait for each week's episode to be released.

Get Millie Black (I think HBO in the U.S.?) is also excellent.

Dune: Prophecy - First 2 episodes were good. Had to watch ep.3 twice and still didn't understand what happened, but it built back up again.

Would also recommend Sweetpea (Starz according to IMDB). Starts like it's going to be a British female version of Dexter but ends up exploring (albeit with extreme results) the damage done to people who were bullied at school.

Gave up on Outlander and Diana Galbadon. She just doesn't have the discipline to finish the last book in the series.

Squid Games season 2 is out on Netflix now. The first episode is already messed up yet so good. Cheers to turning childhood games into horror. :40beers:

I just finished Dune: Prophecy. There were some confusing moments, but overall I found it quite absorbing. (Travis Fimmel is still hot as hell, even when playing a villain.) I still find the timeline to be a bit murky, however.

We're enjoying Star Wars: Skeleton Crew right now. The kids are cute and have interesting character arcs and Jude Law is fun as the ne'er do well who you can't decide is friend or foe. Plus you get to see more of the Star Wars galaxy, mostly to places that haven't been shown before.

What If? has been up and down. The first episode was bleh. The second was fun but the big fight was a bit hard to follow. The 3rd is good if you like the characters of Red Guardian and/or The Winter Soldier and the ending was emotional. But it was just okay overall to me. Episode 4 was a blast. And I don't even like the Howard the Duck character! The 5th episode was decent especially if you like the Riri Williams character. The 6th dropped today and we haven't watched it yet. There are 8 in total.

Oh I gave up on the books ages ago. I think I got about a third of the way through book 4 and became bored with pretty much nothing happening. I put it aside and never went back to it. A rare case where the TV series is better than the book.

I started "A good deed" on Netflix and am loving it. Great role for Lisa Kudrow!

Finally watching the third season of Heartstopper for feelgood additionally.

And I watched the first half of the last season of Cobra Kai some weeks ago, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Got a free subscription to ad supported Crave so I watched season four of True Detective because of the excellent reviews. All I can say is EH? I don’t get the love at all. This show is a mess and mystery’s resolution is decidedly unsatisfactory. The same basic formula for the show has been done before and done much better. You’re better off watching Wind River (2017).

I'm looking forward to Season 3 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon on AMC. This time, the location will be set in Madrid.
Here's a teaser from YouTube.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon | Season 3 Teaser | Ft. Norman Reedus & Melissa McBride

Once I get done with Disclaimer (tonight) I’m going to watch Slow Horses from the beginning. Never watched any but some of my cousins told me it is great. We’ll see.

I just started my annual three-month free Apple subscription, and I'm blowing through Presumed Innocent and S2 of Shrinking. The cliffhangers at the end of each PI episode!

@sk8pics I keep hearing that Slow Horses is fantastic too so I might give it a try. I'm just not sure if it's my type of show.

I couldn't pass up the STARZ $2/month for a year deal that they've been peddling. The upcoming show The Couple Next Door looks intriguing, and I want to check out Three Women and Mary and George.

We started watching Slow Horses a couple of months ago after getting recommendations from both my 30-year-old son and 70+ yr-old cousins. We watched it all and liked it, but the violence is real.

The trailer looked good to me, but we’ll see. I loved loved loved Shrinking and especially the season finale.

I’m currently also on my 4th watch of Ted Lasso. I see things that I never noticed before every time I watch! It’s also a relaxing show for me right before I go to bed since I know what’s going to happen.

I saw that offer but decided there wasn’t enough on it for me.

The upcoming show The Couple Next Door looks intriguing,
I think I commented on The Couple Next Door somewhere else in this thread, but the promo is better than the show. Unlikable main characters, particularly the main one (who I think the audience is meant to have sympathy for), lots of padding and an unsatisfying ending. Lots of the plot twists seemed to be designed to get the character in bed with each other and/or naked. If I want to see Sam Heughan's backside I'll go re-watch Outlander instead.

I do recommend Professor T on Britbox. Burned through that on pretty quickly. I am assuming more episodes are coming as it ended on a cliffhanger.

I'm watching Silo on Apple and Dalgliesh on Acorn and am happy with both. Squid Game has split the season into two parts and I think they are letting us get to know more characters than the first game. Of course it is still brutal but I think I see where the writers are going with this and I like it.
