I'm so happy Patrick is back and skating like we know he can. If this continues, he can make the World podium and/or challenge for the gold. Loved both his programs last night and tonight. WTG Patrick!!!!

Well that is mostly due to Patrick needing some more ranking points for a better start order at worlds and also more outings for his programs - does that sound about right?

It would if it were just Patrick, but they're sending ALL the top finishers. Duhamel and Radford, Weaver and Poje, etc. Glad that Kevin Reynolds and Kaetlyn Osmond will get another competition this season, but disappointed that Nam and MT-M are done for the season.

On a different note, I didn't know that Liam Firus had the Worlds minimums, and was happy to look it up and see that he does. After 2 previous times on the Canadian podium, and a trip to the Olympics, he has finally made it to his first World Championships.

So my impression is that for the last many years SkateCanada has offered the 4CC births first to the medalists and alternates only go if a medalist chooses to give it a pass or gets sick/injured.

As far as I can recall, mostly this has meant Patrick deciding to give it a miss whenever it is not held in North America, and Tessa/Scott while she was having her leg problems.

The footwork into the 3lutz jump is so fabulous.:swoon: Patrick was literally dancing those steps. There are not enough points in the scoring system to reward his mastery of the blade.
Finally a flawless SP from him. Terrific job, Patrick, way to go!

Some pics from Nationals.

At the secondary rink on Saturday morning after the short programme, Patrick was a different person from the one I had seen the day before. At Thursday's practice, Patrick tried the approach to the quad several times and had to abort because he judged that other skaters were in his way. (not deliberately) Each time he yielded the ice - almost apologetically. On Saturday, he owned the ice. I don't mean he was aggressive or intimidating... he just stood taller and owned it.

Any idea when next year's Nats are?
We heard strong rumours about Ottawa. Debbie Wilkes stopped by our table on Sunday night at McKelvies seafood restaurant where she was also eating, and told us it was within a day's drive for the Toronto folk. She wouldn't elaborate further, but the decision has already been made so hopefully that means we'll know quite soon.

Corianna, love your assessment of the Saturday practice session. Spot on!

I flew home on the early morning West Jet flight Monday (7:15 am). Who should also board the plane but our one and only? First time every I've been on a plane with a skater, let alone Patrick. He sat two rows behind us and promptly fell asleep. My mom did manage to speak to him when she used the bathroom prior to landing, as he was also waiting in the aisle for it to be available. She congratulated him on his 8th title and told him he was "just like Brian Orser now". BWAH! We saw him exit the plane as we were getting mom's wheelchair escort arranged, but he never appeared in the luggage area.

A day's drive could be Montreal, Ottawa, London, Detroit, Barrie.newmarket, Kingston.

Anyway sounds good. Hopefully we won't be travelling at the time.

Yes, could be anywhere but we were hearing from other people affiliated with Skate Canada that Ottawa was the forerunner. We also heard that Oshawa had put in a bid, but the hotel situation there is poor. Who knows? It'll probably be somewhere completely random that wasn't even mentioned. ;)

I thought that too. The the top finishers at Nationals automatically got to go to 4CC. Only if they chose not to, then whoever was next in line could go. If there's something I've gotten wrong, anybody - please let me know! :)

Never matters what Patrick does or does not do in practice; he has been known to have horrible practices and even lousy warm ups, but 9 times out of 10, when it comes time to do it, he just refocuses, gets serious and then it's full steam ahead... I hope he will have a great 4CC and meets his competition goals for this event!

I can't think of a jump Patrick could have done better in the free. Would it be wrong to say that technical coaches are overrated?

It wasn't about winning there for him because he already had two 4CC titles but putting up a clean skate with two quads and two triple axels and he did just that. Congrats, Patrick!:cheer2:I hope this is a huge confidence boost for him and he'll repeat the performance at Worlds.

What a way to start a Sunday morning. Thank God for the video & results thread since I would have had to stay up in the wee hours to stream this live on CBC (and I'm too sleep deprived lately to do that). Fantastic skate, Patrick! I love the way he slaps the ice at the end, so awesome to see him happy with his performance. He needs this confidence! And I don't think even he thought he could win it, but he did. Amazing!
