Champs Camp 2017 (Aug 19-23)

And my vow to not get my hopes up about her has officially been thrown out the window. :sheep:

That jump is a wow! :cheer: simply magnificent and so much more real now that she's landed it at champs camp. That's kind of an official competition (ish) so do it again please. :kickass: :respec:

For me that's an evergreen post for about the last eight years.....

:shuffle:

Such is the life of a Mirai fan. :coffee: you go up, you go down, you accept that this is all a bit nuts, then you rinse and repeat. This time it's different though! :shuffle: (again, another evergreen post that has been written many times before..)

She's too lovable for her own good, the girl can't help it.

I know people always says the same, but I think this will be her season :cheer2:, maybe like Liza T. in 2014-15 :biggrinbo .

Maybe so. That was a heck of a triple axel and she seems to land good ones fairly regularly. If she can fully rotate her other jumps and give us some performance like the 2009-2010 Mirai, then this could be a barn-burner season for her.

Exactly. She's gonna be up and down with or without the 3A. Might as well do it with the 3A.

Exactly. [Nagasu is] gonna be up and down with or without the 3A. Might as well do it with the 3A.

I was initially against this strategy; would be easier to see her rotate her other jumps first, but - honestly I think at this point she must feel she has absolutely nothing to lose...and she'd be right. If she's realized she's going to be an on/off competitor anyway, may as well try. Whether she is successful or not, the chips will fall - and if it's meant to be, it'll happen. One trap she does need to watch out for is getting SO hung up over the 3A that in the event she does hit it (or mess it up), everything else goes out the window or she slips up elsewhere...even Mao Asada fell victim to this from time to time.

I came in here to read about Champs camp. I have already made my side in this "discussion" clear. I am done wasting any more of my time on the back and forth. I will, however, waste the minutes it takes to say: Anyone who would listen to second-hand information, badmouthing people, from a "secret Source" about whom nothing is known as to possible motivations for wanting to spread potentially harmful information about one party so as to perhaps boost the chances of another party, ON THE INTERNET, has the IQ of a cauliflower.

@leigh466 Unless, like some of us, we also have "secret sources" saying the same thing (or similar things). I think you'd be surprised how small the community is and how wide information like that spreads. During the time I had a single coach in the know, I knew the training habits of almost every top skater in California (and a lot who weren't at the top), not to mention some of USFSA and Coach's reactions to things those skaters were doing. Though, most of my agreement was based on information gleaned from interviews and official commentary on IceNetwork/Universal/NBC Sports/NBC last season because I haven't heard much about the two skaters in question in about a year since I'm at the rink less. I would question no off-ice, but only because I haven't heard anything about that.
I would also say that saying other users "have the IQ of a cauliflower" is also "badmouthing people" - something you claim to be against.

In Champs Camp news, USFSA is doing a livestream on FB with live Q&A stuff.
Today the men also did media training. I kinda wonder if they let certain older athletes (Adam/Ashley) say/do what they want or if those two just go rogue from what USFSA wants them to say? Last night's Adam response implied it was the later, not that I mind. It's more fun when they're honest!

On the subject of Champs Camp, can someone please provide details of what goes on besides "training"? Thanks.
Champs camp is a high intensity training camp where skaters slotted to compete for Team USA on the Senior Grand Prix circuit to present their programs to officials and judges, to get feedback, and to incorporate that feedback into their programs.

Skaters also do photo shoots and interviews, media training, team building activities, work with experts, fitness testing, nutrition, get help with make up for the ice among other things during the time when they aren’t on the ice. This year one of the skaters mentioned on instagram stories that they were filming carpool karaoke in groups presumably to be aired in the lead up to nationals or the olympics.

I would say this gives me a pretty good idea of both your character and your IQ: As if disparaging well-known top-level athletes (in a thread on a fan board likely to attract high-viewership) and disparaging those who would place any credence at all in the postings of anonymous purveyors of malicious gossip are in any way analogous.

I think the discussion did hit upon a truth. Skating is high risk with little hopes of return. Many skaters need to have a backup plan, be it studying or coaching or whatever, but at the same time the backup plan may also interfere with full time training.

In some ways the skating community or USFS has to find a cost-effective alternative for skaters to get to the top. E.g. must top skaters have to have private ice? Can there not be more group lessons?l and shared ice?

Lots of top skaters do not have private ice. They may occasionally have it when getting choreography, but all the top skaters around here skate on sessions with other skaters. I know it varies on the rink / club and country, but in BC skaters buy ice from their club and sessions are usually arranged by level. 8 Rinks has enough kids to have sessions that require the skaters to be landing multiple triple jumps. At other, smaller clubs, the top session may just require a 2A or to be competing at the novice or junior level.
