A nice interview with IceTalk's Jackie Wong.

Ep. 40: Brendan Kerry/Tammy Gambill

Australian champion Brendan Kerry tells host Jackie Wong what it's like training alongside Vincent Zhou and Karen Chen in Southern California and discusses his goals for the upcoming Olympic season. Then, Kerry's coach, Tammy Gambill, explains why she enjoys bringing skaters up from an early age and what it is about Zhou and Chen that makes them such great competitors.

Re-posting @misskarner's recap of Brendan Kerry's podcast interview from the Ice Talk thread:
He's working on 4F and 4Lz!!!

The SP is his favourite program ever. Could be mine too.

FS is new, only a few weeks old, the original FS "wasn't clicking". He said "Nikolai" did it, so did he mean Morozov?

His goal is to get a top 10 finish at the Olys
Brendan talked about his 2017-18 programs after he debuted them last weekend at the Golden West club comp. and described what it was like to work with Nikolai Morozov for 3 weeks in New Jersey on his new FS in this new OWI article: http://www.owia.org/figure-skating-news/brendan-kerry-is-all-business

New article on Alexandrovskaya and Windsor from Olympic Winter Institute site:
The link posted no longer works - maybe another one will replace it? A/W finished just off the podium, 4th, in their season opener at the JGP in Riga, Latvia (very close among the top 5 pairs) - their programs:
SP (3rd): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyB0SfAB8q0
FS (5th): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_sMBMGR8aE

Article about Kailai Craine's recent luggage woes that didn't prevent her from winning a silver medal in Slovenia last weekend: http://www.owia.org/figure-skating-news/when-all-you-have-are-your-skates-kailani-secures-silver
She is back in Los Angeles to train for 2 weeks before heading to Ondrej Nepela and then Olympic qualifying at Nebelhorn.

From Matilda and William's Facebook page (thanks for the heads up @Bunny Hop ):

This morning at training Will had a bad fall that resulted in a clean break through his ankle and landed him in hospital waiting for surgery where plates, pins and screws will be put in. We are devastated that this has happened, especially because we have been training so hard for our first opportunity to compete at an Olympic Qualifying event in Germany, which we were just over two weeks from. Injuries are a part of the sport and as hard as it is to accept that we will be out of training an unable to compete our two programs which we have put endless work and love into, we are in good spirits and know that we can come back stronger than ever!! We want to say a massive thank you to our coaches Mon and John for making sure we were okay throughout the day, and also to Liz Cain and Peter Lynch for their support and well wishes. Will, you're a bloody trooper! Here to support you all the way, and counting down the days to be back on the ice with you doing what we love.

:wuzrobbed :wuzrobbed Get well soon Will!

A lovely interview with Brendan. :) It was cool to hear how Brendan ended up coming to the States to work with Tammy Gambill after Richard Dornbush befriended Brendan and 'took him under his wing.' I also enjoyed Wong's separate interview with Gambill later in the broadcast.

Sweet how Brendan and Harley are such best buds. I wish them both great success in their skating careers. :cheer2:

From Matilda and William's [Friend/Badaoui] Facebook page (thanks for the heads up @Bunny Hop )
Direct link to Matilda's FB post (*warning*: includes a photo of William's swollen, broken left ankle): https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=788800951279900&id=450816605078338

I'm really sorry to hear about William's injury and for both skaters to have to miss this opportunity of competing in the Olympic qualifying comp. for AUS. :(

Kimberley HEW-LOW / Timothy MCKERNAN have replaced Friend/Badaoui at Nebelhorn

Congrats to Kerry for medaling today and getting the bronze.

I see though Kailiani and BrookLee though not doing bad are doing rather respectable so far this season.

Was surprised to see Kat & Harley not medal at their GP, (4th right?)

Do we think Aussie could get in there for Team Event if they perform better this season than say Isreal?

Here's to Kerry singlehandedly trying to qualify an Australian team to the Olympics :cheer: I hope he does it though, not making less of the other Australian athletes but it's be great to see him and A/W compete in a team setting.

Super proud of Brendan, two weeks and two medals, that's how we roll.

Brooklee and Kailani were also very good this weekend, Brooklee's SP at ACI was absolutely stunning.

God, the Nebelhorn Trophy this week. I'm going to die of nerves. Thank god this is only every four years and we have one less division to worry about this time. To Katia and Harley, to Kailani, to Kimberly and Timothy: the best of luck!

Race to PC:

Kailani Craine: So far a 3rd at Asian Open (155.17) and an 8th at Ondrej Nepela Trophy (157.64).

Brooklee Han: So far a 7th at US Classics (131.02) and a 7th at Autumn Classic (158.81).

These placements and scores have no direct bearing on the Olympic spot itself other than they affect their respective world rankings, as detailed below.

Kailani is scheduled for Nebelhorn soon, not sure if Brooklee is scheduled to be competing somewhere.

If after Nebelhorn that skater is ranked 20 places or more ahead of the next ranked Australian skater in the ISU Senior World Rankings, then they get the Olympic nomination. If they are not 20 or more places ahead, then both skaters will have to attend the same two ISU international competitions in between Nebelhorn and 20 January 2018, as nominated by Ice Skating Australia. Their total scores at these events will then be added, and the higher ranked skater then gets to go to the Olympics.

Quoting the selection criteria from @Bunny Hop - Kailani is currently 4th / 34th and Brooklee is currently 7th / 49th on the Season's World Rankings list and World Standings list respectively. @Bunny Hop do you know which one we should be looking at?

^^^ And Kailani is the one doing Nebelhorn? Should be interesting.......

According to Sylvia, Kailani met the Nebelhorn Trophy selection requirements prior to the Challenger Series season.

That being said, Craine will need to skate a solid short and free in Germany, as will Katia and Harley, to help Australia qualify spots for the Olympic Games.

Kim and Tim, being late replacements for Matilda Friend & William Badaoui, will likely be skating here to help Australia accumulate points towards being potential entrants in the Team Event in Korea, too.

Don't quote me, but my understanding is that if Australia qualifies spots in ladies, pairs and dance, that our National Championships in December will decide the team.

A lot can happen in two months.

Oh my. Is the selection criteria being changed again? Haven't they had enough appeal cases?

Just as Brendan Kerry earned a spot for an Australian man in Helsinki, Nebelhorn is about earning spots for Australia in pairs, ladies and dance, not the athlete competing in Germany, I believe.

True, but up-thread, @Bunny Hop had quoted a document from ISA stating the criteria, which I quoted earlier today as well.

@essence_of_soy

Well, Kailani must first qualify a spot for Australia. :) Other contenders for spots at Nebelhorn and which have similar PB to Kailani include: Kerstin FRANK AUT; Elizaveta UKOLOVA CZE; Anne Line GJERSEM NOR; Dasa GRM SLO; Matilda ALGOTSSON SWE; Alexia PAGANINI SUI and Anna KHNYCHENKOVA UKR. If Kailani delivers her usual per her last 2 internationals and scores around 155-160, AUS should be fine.

Second, it depends on whether "ISU Senior World Rankings" as quoted from the document is refering to the Season's World Rankings list or the World Standings list. Kailani is ahead on 3 spots on the former but 15 spots on the latter. If it is the latter list and if Kailani's Nebelhorn's showing gives her another 5 spot advantage over Brooklee, then Kailani is in.

If they are still within 20 spots of each other after Nebelhorn, then they need to compete head-to-head for that sole spot with 2 more international competitions. Given the deadline is 20 Jan 2018, 4CCs will be too late for that. The most logical competitions would be the rest of the Challenger series. Finlandia might be too close after Nebelhorn, but competing at two of Minsk, Warsaw, Tallinn and Zagreb shouldn't be a problem for either of them.

Sorry for delayed reply; I've been travelling (on our way to Nebelhorn tomorrow morning actually!). No, I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that, but very good question!

Yes, that's right. Earning the qualifying spot for Australia at Nebelhorn does not mean that skater/team gets to go to the Olympics. It couldn't be that way in any case, given the citizenship issue in Pairs (also dance I think, but we're not realistically going to qualify a dance spot anyway). So the qualifying criteria quoted earlier comes into play after Nebelhorn is over, although I imagine that will ultimately only affect Ladies as, barring injury, Kerry and Alexandrovskaya/Windsor are locks (assuming the latter qualify, and sort out citizenship in time).

Whatever happens I will be waving my Aussie flag at Nebelhorn tomorrow.

Contras on their BRONZE medal! WOW..

and what turnaround from their first JGP last month.

When is their next JGP? Next weekend??

How cool.. they will be AT OLYS!!!

And Kailani is in FIRST place in SP at Nebelhorn, and Kerry got the bronze at his 2 weeks ago!!!!!!!!!

QUICK question - if AUS has nada in dance would they still be able to qualify for the TEAM event?

SO proud of a country coming on strongly in this sport!

They really skated to the tip-top of their current ability in that freeskate. I was thrilled to see them so thrilled afterwards.

This x 1,000 >:cheer2:

Today I saw Australian skaters standing on the same medal podium as Aliona Savchenko. Okay, it's not Worlds or anything, but I've been watching skating for over 30 years and never thought I'd see Australian skaters receiving medals in an international event alongside World medallists. In other words, WTF JUST HAPPENED?

QUICK question - if AUS has nada in dance would they still be able to qualify for the TEAM event?
If Australia qualifies for the team event in whatever manner they can use the additional athlete quota to send a dance team for the team event, without the dance team themselves having qualified. Britain did this at the last Olympics (they didn't qualify anyone for Men's but were able to send a skater for the team event only).
