Russian figure skating news in 2024 & 2025

Gumennik, Semenenko and a surprize Mozalev finish 1, 2 and 3. Semenenko has one of the best SP of any skater this season. His step sequence is brilliant. Dikidzhe had a bit of a meltdown which in some ways will reduce the pressure his fanbase will put on Gumennik for Milano. But, overall a good SP for the top 12.

Solid 3A back for Petrosian. She looks more than ready for Italy. Top 12 skaters were all great and top 6 crushed it. Channel 1 has a new graphic that shows the technical element scores in the KnC before the final score is shown allowing the skaters and coaches to see them immediately.

I was kind of mystified by the score of 70 for the second to the last skater. She did her 3A and I actually enjoyed her program more than AP's and yet she gets 70 points to AP's 83 (which seems WAY high.)

If no one else in their categories has no World Standings points, yes, like Shen/Zhao did for the SP in the 2010 Olympics. If there is another skater with no Worlds Standings points, then all the skaters with no Worlds Standings points would be in a draw for the first number of spots as there are skaters without Worlds Standings points.

This is very rare for the Olympics, given how few spots there are, but if a country has two spots, and skater #2 was able to gain the TES total minimum, but not WS earn points, it's possible. (ex: new to seniors and coming back from injury; last minute un-retirement because there's a spot open.) That could happen if they earned the minimum at an international, but still didn't place in the Top 5, or if they participated in an event that didn't qualify for WS points: you only need two competitors from two members -- the definition of an international competition -- to be able to earn the TES minimums, while to earn WS points, for singles, you need eight skaters from four members. (With all other requirements met, including the credentials and makeup of the judges and tech panels.)

Q - Will Petrosyan and Gummenik skate first at the Olympics due to no international ranking?
Per the ISU Rules -
Rule 403
Draws at the Olympic Winter Games
All draws will be conducted according to the Rules for ISU Championships. However, the draw for the Short Program/Rhythm Dance in each discipline will be held two days in advance.
And from the ISU Championships rule regarding draws:
f) Skaters/Pairs/Couples, who have not received any ISU World Standing points will be listed at the bottom of the list in country order. There will be a separate draw between those Skaters/Pairs/Couples with no World Standing placements to determine the starting order, following the basic principles of the draws.
Gumennik should be the first for the Men's SP. There will be a draw between Petrosian and Safonova for the 1-2 in the starting order of the Women's SP.

Gumennik was excellent. Petrosian was too although in slomo her 3A appears to land UR with her blade turning on the ice. Her 86.52 score was ridiculously high IMO. Obviously with both of them skating in the early groups at the Olympics, both will have to be absolutely squeaky clean in their respective SPs in hopes of getting in the Final or Penultimate groups in the FS.

Really enjoyed the men and what a deep field. I thought Yuma had my favorite short and then Semenenko blew me away.

Yes they were. I've always loved all three of them. Semenenko's program though, I can't say how much I loved it.

What stages of the Russian Grand Prix did he compete in? I'd like to try to watch other versions of it.
I remember the Moscow event but not sure about the second

I tried watching the Rus Nats and failed - there are so many commercial ads on and around the ice and it's so freakin colourful I can't see the sktaers. They are lost behind all these soups, banks and investing companies.

I know some with wishful thinking have said Russian women were in decline. Watch the entire FS and rethink that. Skate after skate after skate. The depth of talent is mindboggling. And that's the first two groups.

Anna Frolova, on the bother hand, doesn’t have any quads but has nice skating skills and maturity

It’s a rather rare example of a skater that I want to make it to international competitions just to prove that even Russia’s women skating is not only about some starved kids

OMG Tsareva's kid medals with 2 quads. And, there was the tongue of disgust from Mama as well. I've waited for this since she was a junior. ITA about Frolova. I'm sad she's off the podium and Maria Z is on. Sad for one and thrilled for the other.

I don’t want to rethink anything, for me Russian ladies is still the most boring discipline of all (and well, ladies in general)

I would better watch trashy ice dance rather than 16 y.o. doing underrotated quads. And yes, this goes not just to Russian skating
I watched Russian ladies once a few years ago when Tuktamysheva still competed and she was the only competitor 18+. Everybody else looked similar and had the same program.

It made me sad what has become of it.

I always blame IJS for this! It’s a fact and true but hardly means it’s bad or just a Russian thing

I’ll always love Kostornaia, one of the loveliest skater I’ve seen live. I also loved Polina Tsurskaya for the power of her jumps. It was sad that injuries took her out.

I didn’t love her skating, but I admired how Scherbakova came through big each time she was written off and for her patience and kindness to the little local fangirls who mobbed her at JGP in Richmond.
