Ashley Wagner Cheer Thread #3: The Subject of Tonight's Lecture...

Ashley certainly had an impressive career. I really, really hope she becomes some sort of commentator so she can openly opine on things that she likes and doesn't like without getting backlash like "yeah like you could even do that"

I’m all for her replacing Johnny.

Saw Ashley at SOI for the opening show at Germain Arena.

LLL was the highlight, she was noticeably very emotional and it was a nice moment. Her 1st act solo was I am Here, which looked like it needed a bit more time to really come together. I know she's been off the ice for over a month. She had some pretty great group numbers. Her jumps were solid through and through (few 2A's, two 3Lo, 3F).

She is in a strata of her own when compared to the other ladies (Mirai, Bradie, Karen) live. Her star power just oozes, and in group numbers your eye just naturally draws to her movements. Audience reaction to her IAH was tepid, but LLL got a rousing ovation.

Looks like a fun show. I do hope Ashley changes the opening of that first number it seems quite clunky and not up to Ashley’s usual standards - maybe it just needs a bit more mileage. Her La La Land dress is just to die for!

A couple of excerpts re: Ashley
Arutunian said he has not spoken to Wagner or Rippon about the future.

"They are enjoying life now, and I don't want to interrupt that," Arutunian said. "I want to give them some time. I would say I need to know around the middle of May."
Arutunian believes Wagner, 27 next month, would definitely remain in the very elite of U.S. women's skating if she continued, especially given the U.S. women's performances at the 2018 Olympics (they finished 9-10-11, worst ever at a Winter Games in which the U.S. had three women's entries) and the paucity of other talented skaters currently at the U.S. senior level.
"I don't think she (Wagner) could survive another four years, but one or two, she could if she wants to," Arutunian said. "But I am not going to force anybody.

The question is why. She was thrown under the bus by her fed and not given much benefit of the doubt for Olympic selection to favour someone who admitedly had boot problems and had been hot and cold (mostly cold) for 2 seasons. Realistically she had won as much as she could win and most probably peaked in 2015/6 technically. She hadn't done a clean 3/3 and 3-1-3 in the same program in a long time.

I doubt she had the motivation to continue. Those jumps and spins would just be getting harder and harder. Carolina would be a fine role model but she comes from a country with little internal competition.

This is how I see the situation, too. I mean, Ashley has overcome a lot and proven doubters and naysayers wrong so many times before, but I just have a feeling this time is different. :(

There's also the fact that his friend & training mate (for, what, past 6 years?) is almost certainly retiring from competition. Ashley has talked about how doing off-ice workouts etc. with Adam by her side is really helpful and motivating and how they're pushing each other to be better, so him not being there anymore is another factor to consider.

I would not continue if I were Ashley. Karen was a total dud at the Olympics, blaming her skating in her boots, crying about not seeing her mom, and totally bailed on Worlds. Not an ounce of a champion in her. I mean can you imagine Tara, Michelle, Sasha, etc... whining at the Olympics that they missed their mom??? Karen and Mirai were acting like they were sent to jail, it was so ridiculous. hope at this point Ashley can just laugh about it and move on.

I could see Ashley going either way. I can see her just wanting to be done with it all and move on. But she has had great career and I could also see her not wanting it to end this way. I could see her wanting to come back and skate one more year for herself and not have 2018 nationals be her last competitive performance.

I hope that Ashley does continue until 2022. Maybe (for reasons unknown to us) she was not at her best during the 2017-2018 season. She has a beautiful performance quality to her skating and I think the jumps could be there. She might do very well with Brian Orser!

I don't think Orser wants to coach American skaters because he doesn't like doing the usfsa paperwork.

Raf has been vocal about Ashley really struggling to put the work in. She’s also cited difficulties motivating after her World medal. She would have to really want to throw herself in at 150% to make it worth it. Otherwise she will just have a so so year. I think we saw the lack of true motivation play out over the course of this past season. It’s a lot to give up and to give of yourself if you aren’t in it to win it. I love Ashley. I’m so not ready for her to retire. But I just don’t see her mentally getting back in the game for next year. It breaks my heart to say that.

It's questionable whether it really started the year before the Olympics. I think there's more at play here than mediocre training.

She admitted to lower motivation after winning the world silver, which led to her having a late start to her 2016-2017 season. But Ashley usually fires on all cylinders mid-season and elevates herself around Dec-Feb. The difference was, she went through a major breakup in the middle of the 2017 season. Her long-time boyfriend broke up with her, and her world dropped out from under her before worlds. Combine that with the late start and lower motivation, pressure of 3 spots for Olys, and you can see why her season fizzled out.

From there, it looked like she struggled with injury this season (as a former skater, looking at her crossovers and body alignment this season, I think she was battling subtle injuries), and all kinds of factors including sponsor obligations. There's been a lot against Ashley Wagner in the past 2 years. That said, I do feel that the way she was training around Nationals and her trajectory, that she would have had it together by the Olys/Worlds. It's a shame the USFSA took that chance away from her.

We also have to consider burnout. There hasn't been another skater of her level who has skated as many consecutive seasons at the senior level without a break. No one else is facing that, they're all too young. Caro/Mao/Yuna, they all took seasons or part-seasons away. Kwan took time off in her later years. Ash deserves major props for never doing that, that's gotta be tough.

There’s no stronger motivation for the eternal underdog Wagner than what happened at 2018 nationals. I can see how she would want to end her career on her terms, but I also remember her stating once (maybe it was on TSL) that she didn’t want to be the skater that stuck around longer than she needed to more or less. I think her return to competitive skating will just depend on the opportunities that she comes across while not being on the ice 5 or 6 says a week.

Here is Ashley's full performance to LaLaLand at Stars On Ice Long Island, it all its lilty glory: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzCM517eGxw

The video quality isn't very good, but gets better and it's worth the watch. She's a stunning performer here, I teared up.

As much as I do not like this movie, I love this program.

A year ago she already had her music picked out and she seemed so excited and over the moon about her music. She kept teasing us all all spring long with it.

Then outta nowhere she pulled a "Karen Chen" and ditched.

I wonder why? I think she would have done so well with this. I wonder who or what got in her head. Did some official say something to her at Champs Camp in Sept? If so they also said something to Bradie and Bradie was like "Sure, whatever." LOL

Im all for repeating a program if it warrants it. But three times? The second time she performed it at Worlds she wasnt even in top 6. So by Oct 2017 there was no reason to bring MR back at all. Especially in an Oly year. You dont want to head to the Olys with the same program you did for 3 years.

I think the LLL program has PCS all over it... :( I hope she comes back for one more season to satisfy the needs of one person: ME :p

P.S. Websters: "Karen Chen" adjective. To abort a program for no apparent reason. Used in a sentence: Tarasova & Morosov should have Karen Chened last October.
