2025 Skate America location/dates

I wish they’d come on already and let us down with the Lake Placid news so I can plan my alternate trip to Austin. I have a friend there I haven’t seen in years who’s been asking me to visit and I’ve always wanted to see the city. I’ve never been able to squeeze it into the fall or spring with skating trips and whatnot (too hot in the summer). Having late October open for once will be perfect.

It's scheduled for November 14-16th.

Last season Amber did not do Skate America so she and Isabeau would not be competing against each other allowing both the chances to qualify for GPF.

No, that’s what all of us thought was the scenario, Amber has publicly stated she did not want skate America. They put out an objective were they thought she could be the most successful, and she actually asked for those two events, China and France. She has mentioned she does not like to compete Domestically.

I still don't get why the assumption is Skate America will be in LP. I may have missed it -- did someone with "inside" knowledge post?

With regard to the women, agree on Liu, but the other spot should be Glenn's as the reigning National & Grand Prix Final Champ. I can't see the USFS doing her dirty two seasons in a row simply because she finished the lowest of the 3 US women but still 5th.
It would be very poor planning if USFS assigned two potential gold medal winners to the same Grand Prix.

You do realize, with the depth of the Japanese & US fields as well as Gubanova, Petrokina, Gutmann & Kim, there are going to be at least three legitimate gold medal threats at every single Grand Prix, right?

Sakamoto - 2 GP wins, SB 231.88
Liu - World Champion, SB 226.67
Kim - 4CCs Champion & 2024 World Bronze, SB 222.38
Glenn - GPF Champ, SB 215.54
Chiba - GPF Silver, Worlds Bronze, SB 215.24
Lin-Gracey - Jr Worlds Bronze, 2 Challenger wins, SB 213.33
Gubanova - Euros Silver, SB 211.19
Levito - Worlds 4th, 2024 Worlds Silver, SB 209.84
Petrokina - Euros Champ, SB 208.18
Higuchi - 1 GP win, Worlds 6th, SB 206.08
Nakai - JGPF Bronze, Jr Worlds 4th, SB 204.88
Tennell - 4CCs Silver, SB 204.38
Sumiyoshi - 1 GP Bronze, SB 202.45
Everhardt - 4CCs Bronze, SB 201.90
Gutmann - 1 GP Bronze, SB 201.56

And that list doesn't even include Yoshida, Matsuike, Watanabe, Pinzarrone, Repond, Aoki, Lee or Shin - who all have some serious GP/ISU Championships hardware of their own, though not this past season.

I like Amber well enough, but guaranteed, these fields are DEEP and she'll be one of at least two, possibly three, entrants with legitimate gold medal potential at any GP.

Jason finished 8th at Worlds, so he's not seeded. The 4-6 skaters were Adam, Kevin and Shun Sato. I would think Kevin would want to come to SA, given his previous success there. :)

:duh: I was thinking of the FS placement. Although I guess USFS could still select Jason and a lot of fans (not @rfisher ) would be pleased as punch if they get him and Aymoz. After Worlds, despite his good GP and nationals results, I'm guessing Torgy gets the much loathed China spot.

I completely agree that Liu and Glenn would be the match-up I'd prefer to watch, but Amber did decline it last season. However, since it's the fifth event and (hypothetically) involve the least travel (sorry if it is Lake Placid, skaters! :P ) that maybe this season she'd prefer it? I still just believe USFS will go for pretty princess Isabeau, but it's all based on my gut

Will Loena be back? I’ve lost track of her recovery timeline.
I'm not sure she's on the ice quite yet. She's been posting on her IG that she's out of the cast/boot and cycling recently, but I'm not sure how much skating she's been able to do. She'll have to be ready by September, though, for the Olympic Qualifying Event.

The other question is whether or not she's even eligible for GP assignments. She didn't take the whole season off due to the injury - she competed at the invitational Shanghai Trophy at the start of October. If the GP Host Commission says it counts as competing, then she's not eligible for any initial assignments since she'll fall out of the WS Top 24 & doesn't have a SB. If the GP Host Commission decides that an invitational competition that doesn't count for WS points or a SB score doesn't qualify as having competed this season, then she'd be eligible as a Comeback Skater. We'll know whenever we see the GP assignments.

Saskatoon must involve less travel from Colorado Springs than Lake Placid would, no?
I'll be really curious which American skaters, especially of the seeded ones, wind up at SCI. It'll also be interesting to see who else scores SkAm host spots. Obviously, there will be the 1 TBD in each discipline, but Men & Pairs are potentially open-ended.

I sort of think, if Flores/Wang stick with their intention to fully go senior this coming season, they'll wind up with the 2nd SkAm spot, if only because they're guaranteed 1 GP due to their WS Top 24 & there just aren't enough spots to go around to all the teams guaranteed at least 1 GP without at least some of the host feds biting the bullet & assigning one of their own teams guaranteed 1 to their own event - ie Les Kovs to GPdF, NagaMori to NHK, FloWang to SkAm, PerMich to SCI - VaanCler would have gotten Finlandia had they not split; and the CFSA is probably going to have to invite Sui & partner (whomever it winds up being, if anything materializes) to CoC.

For the men - part of me thinks it'll be Torgy, but it could just as easily be Brown or even Ma.

Some of the situations referenced here, having two top U.S. skaters competing at Skate America, were done at the request of the television broadcaster.

I suspect those assignments were a result of Covid risks and travel restrictions that were still around at that point in time. Assigning the top skaters to SA reduced their int'l travel and also assured they would have at least one GP if any others were canceled.
We must also remember the hassle of traveling at that time with different waves hitting different countries and with multiple rules for proving vaccination status. Even folks who loved travel got huge headaches trying to understand all the rules.

Oh yeah. I’ll never forget, a few months before SA, running around Dulles to get the right piece of paper to transit Germany (for a two hour layover) and almost missing our flight. And having to pay for four different Covid tests to leave Israel because the airlines kept canceling flights and it had to be in a 36 hour period before flying. Fun times.
