From the Daily Beast

NBC is set to employ a number of new tactics—from celebrity cameos to a number of wackier gimmicks—to draw as many viewers as it can to the 2024 Olympics in Paris this summer. Peyton Manning, Snoop Dogg, Kelly Clarkson, Mike Tirico and Jimmy Fallon are all set to assist with the broadcast, according to a deep-dive into the network’s plans published by VarietyWednesday. NBC’s novel approach, which includes live coverage of every event on Peacock, will be a change from the relatively sober coverage garnered by past Olympic games, spurred in part by traditional network TV’s fracturing audience numbers. Expect influencer-hosted watch parties, celebrity anchors, and even mid-event gimmicks like sticking heart-rate monitors on athletes’ parents and displaying the results live on the screen, the trade publication reports. “We’ve got to be innovating, trying things differently, trying to match where the media world is in 2024,” Rick Cordella, president of NBC Sports, told Variety.”

Here’s a thought to get more eyeballs: cover a WAY more varied roster of sports. Bring back those ‘up close and personal’ profiles of athletes of various nationalities. Don’t focus on marquee sports to the exclusion of most other sports. I for one have zip interest in early rounds in swimming, which is soooo tiresomely overcovered in the US because we have medal contenders.

Re-posting here from the P/C fan thread:
The French article today says "Paris 2024 Olympic Games: skater Gabriella Papadakis will carry the Olympic flame to the Athens stadium
While the Olympic flame has just been lit, this Tuesday, in Olympia, the tricolor skater, of Greek origin, will be one of the seven French bearers on Greek territory."
Gabriella will run with the Olympic torch on April 26 in Athens: https://x.com/sportricolore/status/1780642470373527857

"Finally on the eleventh day, Friday, April 26, the Olympic flame will be handed over to Paris 2024 organizers in a ceremony at the all-marble Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, site of the first modern Olympic Games of 1896, on 26 April."

If you can't make it to Paris, the surfing event will be held in Tahiti. :summer:

From a far, the white and red options look like someone forgot a big red shirt in the washer and did a load of white clothing.

Even Leylah Fernandez can’t save it (and oversize does no favours to petite people). I trust her tennis outfits (also Lululemon) will be smoking though.

The pink? burgundy? also look like they ran in the wash.

The red option look like camouflage but I see some flowers in there so I’ll allow it.

The black, red and teal (?) option is fine.

I watch mostly for swimming, track and female team sports. I did reading a Rolling Stone feature about a break dancer representing the US. It sounds so incongruous to me but I know I will watch.

Thought I would post an interesting article on Artistic swimming in advance of Paris. Bill Mayi s the only male trying out for the team and would be a first if selected for Olympic competition. I didn't realize he was already 45!

Any FSUers going to Tahiti to watch surfing? Also, am I wrong or is Parkour actually a sport in these games?

Certain Chinese swimmers tested positive for performance enhancing drugs in 2016 and 2017, affecting 12 other athletes in water polo and 13 in other sports, yet no action has ever been taken. Trace amounts of the drug clenbuterol has been tied to some cases due to its weight loss and muscle growth potential. The Chinese explanation for some cases has been linked with meat contamination in meals unknowingly served to athletes. Use of Trimetazidine also was found as it improves stamina and endurance with faster recovery times.

I didn’t know that! I hate swimming in rivers and lakes so when I saw this, I thought “EEEK!
Well, yes, but these swimmers that will be doing these events do this all the time so swimming in lakes and rivers is pretty normal for them

But I have to admit I’m a little interested in how Paris will do. As far as I can tell, they have not been able to have a rehearsal of the opening ceremony yet (a little scary if you are the organizers because that is a big TV event and there’s a lot of expectations. I know that in Atlanta, there were multiple full rehearsals. And we weren’t trying anything near this ambitious.). Plus the rains that have messed up their attempts to get the river clean.

Apparently the Seine's bacteria levels have been testing at acceptable levels and continue to decline for the past couple weeks. The mayor will be taking a dip on July 15th. And the full boat rehearsal is scheduled for this coming week.

This boat thing sounds nutty. Why can’t athletes walk into a stadium?

I bet that NBC will have its own cameras for this…including one on a drone, hovering over Simone Biles’ eyelashes. Let’s bet now - how many times will we be seeing Biles on her boat before Team USA gets into the stadium? 🚤

I bet zero. USA Gymnastics does not permit the gymnasts to participate in the opening ceremony.

Sure. People need to remember what the mayor said about the sharks and look how that turned out.

Depends on when the WAG starts - the Opening Ceremonies lasts several hours and that's on top of queueing up and riding busses from the OV to the staging area for the Seine boat parade. If the WAG starts early the next day then it would not surprise me if they do skip the OC - many athletes make that choice every Olympics, Winter & Summer.

ETA - looking at the schedule - OC is July 26th, WAG qualifying is July 28th, so it's possible that some or all of the WAG team will attend the OC. But it's not a requirement and they need to do what they feel is best for their team and individual medal prospects.
