2021/2022 Canadian Pairs: News and Updates

Meagan Duhamel is doing an IG Live with Kelly Rippon right now and she just commented that she thinks now is the time for the Canadian pairs program to consider bringing in outside help, and she specifically referenced the help Nina Mozer has given the US pairs program. I really hope that Bruno is able to find someone who can come in and help improve the twists with his teams, at minimum.
They should bring in Lubov for that... Her twist was sky Hi with first partner but when she started with Dylan they switched to an in between tech....on the twist. a bit Russian but mostly Canadian. They could also use her for a finisher with her beautiful balletic moves and innovation in lifts.

Piper & Paul were universally expected to be the MVPs in the team event (and strictly speaking, they got one point less than Madeline did).
After Messing couldn't skate, perhaps, but they weren't expected to be higher than 3rd in whatever segment H/D skated, nor C/B, if "good" C/B showed up. When Messing and Russia's S/B were/might have been in the mix, Messing was expected to be third or fourth, with Chen and whichever of the Japanese men ahead of him, and S/B, based on Euros, looked possible to spoil G/P.

With all of the emphasis on how J/R outscored W/M internationally to justify their selection, it's not surprising that people who accepted the hype would have though that they, too, would beat evryone but Russian pairs and Sui/Han, the same 3rd that could be reasonably expected of G/P, based on their Worlds bronze.

Even at their supposed "peak" KMT and Mike were never nearly as good as she was with Dylan. It was a really stupid decision to leave him abruptly for what seemed like no plausible reason. Ruined both their careers

She wanted to get to two more Olympic Games something that Moskovitch wasn’t willing to do at his age.

Mark Bardei is the one who should be teaching the twist.

Anybody who thought that hadn't looked at their international scores. I don't think the federation was expecting them to place any better than they did in the team event.

I agree he should be teaching but not sure he is even in Canada. He was here at the grace of his ex partner's father & I don't think was able to just stay here once partnership finished. Would have loved to see Lubov and Mark as partners but they would have needed funding....too bad....

FYI: a lot of people who don't usually follow skating are very excited about Vanessa James, the first Black figure skater to represent Canada at the Olympics. There may indeed for show opportunities for J & R. I also expect them both to invited back to compete on the Battle of the Blades.
I’d hate to think that the J/R team was concocted for p.c. (affirmative action) publicity’s sake.

I think they will be invited to shows but not because of how they skated in Beijing. And yes they already have done the Battle of the Blades.

If Vanessa can bring in skaters of color- that would be great.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they were just ready to retire after the Games. It has been a rough few years, and Kirsten earlier was already uncertain whether she wanted to go to Worlds.

So J/R finished 12 at Olympics and several teams on ahead of them won’t be at worlds (S/H, T/M, M/G, B/K, P/J, MT/M anyone else?)

Is top 5 possible?

Probably. The Americans and Canadians are not that far apart in skills. It will depend on the day…

At the Olympics it was
  1. Sui/Han
  2. Tarasova/Morozov
  3. Mishina/Galliamov
  4. Boikova/Kozlovskii
  5. Peng/Jin
  6. Knierim/Frazier
  7. Miura/Kihara
  8. Cain-Gribble/Leduc
  9. Safina/Berulava
  10. Moore-Towers/Marinaro
  11. Barquero/Zandron
  12. James/Radford
Only K/F, M/K and CG/L will be at Worlds of the teams who beat them. If you put Metelkina/Parkman in S/B's place, that's still 5th. Not that everyone will skate the same as at the Olympics, but yes top 5 is definitely possible.
